About
1000 Hills Chef School students have taken the SA Junior Chef of the Year title TEN times since 2006, including the win in 2019 and 2018. Our fine dining restaurant and bistro-style deli are the practical training ground for our students. Here they practise serving and preparing both food and beverages for paying guests while still enjoying the safety of a school environment. They will explore trends and focus on seasonal ingredients, with input to our menus that are revised each term. Senior students complete an Advanced Diploma with a focus on supervision and management. They put their training to the test and take it in turn to manage the deli (with oversight) and review feedback on everything from profit and loss to the impact of weather on margins. Come and enjoy a bite so they can enjoy exposure to the real world of work.

My husband and I go here fairly regularly. Its a lovely drive up from Durban and the setting is beautiful. Sadly this visit was very dissapointing. I had a pizza which was good but not woodfired? If you dont order a bottle of wine the option is a 250ml canned wine for r65. I feel this is a bit steep. The biggest dissapointment was the cheese platter. It was a platter of 2 kinds of bread , some torn red cabbage in vinegar , and star fruit also jn vinegar as sides. There were 2 cheeses, both young ,soft, tasteless cheeses. This platter is r130. I complained and it was explained that everything served is made by the students hence there was no mature cheese. We just leff feeling a little sad and concerned that their standards are slipping and this in the long is detrimental to the students attending there, also feel perhaps there is a lack of au fait management.

Lovely relaxed venue with outdoor seating for sunny days, or formal restaurant for excellent meals. Small menu is varies on a daily basis. Craft beers and gin also on offer.

Decided to visit 1000 hills chef restaurant as it was a fabulous day. As we arrived we were greeted by one of the students/waitress and asked where we would like to be seated. Being such a beautiful day we were spoilt for choice. Decided to sit at the top to enjoy the beautiful views. Ordered our drinks and decided on a platter of nachos with accompaniments. Needless to say they were excellent. Freshly made and flavousome. Asked gir dome green cut chillies and they could not accommodate us. Will be back for more on another round

we have just had lunch there. 20 + minutes to be served a drink and an hour to be served lunch. Other people arrived after us and were served. We were offered excuse after excuse. When our food arrived it was luke warm. At that stage we were so hungry we ate it any way. Very poor!!

The food was cold, and did not all come at once, we all ordered 2 meals came and the other 4 came about 30 minutes later, the drinks came 20 minutes after ordering a few beers. The only thing good was the gin. The food that came was not nice, was very very poorly prepared. They tried to offer a free Cake to say sorry, it was a stale muffin, 3 days old at least, with lemon curd topping, it was off. We all have food poisoning after, some worse than others. Avoid if you don’t want to get terribly ill, but avoid because its total rubbish. They did not even seem to care.

We were well aware that it was a training chef school - that being said - it was shocking to say the least. We had the lamb curry - sambals were not up to scratch - the naan bread was half raw and doughy - heavy as lead. Whoever is training these students is clearly not doing a very good job at all - which is a great pity. In fact it was chaos - to be quite honest. No finesse at all!

My son recommended we visit this awesome eatery. We had a table with a stunning view. We did beer tasting and had a pizza and sausage taste plate. It was great under the trees. My gin drink was beautiful!

The chef school offers the opportunity for students to prepare and service food to various patrons that visit. There are various tables available, whether outside on a deck or inside in the deli area. The menu offers a variety of food, from breakfasts, pizzas to main meals that include curries and more. We arrived for brunch and I chose the omelette with onions, bacon and mushrooms wit rye bread. The chefs had just started with the quiches of the day and, since we had three orders of those at the table, we were asked to wait for 20 minutes while it was prepared. It's a lovely area to catch-up and spend time with people, so the wait wasn't an issue and we enjoyed coffee and the general ambiance while we waited. There's also a deli on the premises where I bought some cheese for an afternoon snack after we arrived at home The food was well prepared and tasty - well worth the wait. Prices are comparable to other restaurants in the area but it's worth giving the students some practical experience during your visit. The lady that looked after us was really eager to please and very friendly All in all a lovely experience in the area

We stumbled across the 1000 Hills Chef School Restaurant by accident, but really glad we did. It’s in a lovely setting, sharing premises with a brewery. We sat outside in the shade of trees. Service was good, costs were reasonable and the food was good. The menu offers various lunch items from salads and sandwiches to pizzas. Some patrons had brought their dogs to frolick in the lawns. There’s also a kiddies play area.

this little gem offers real farm to table food. the cheeses, jams, chutney's, atchar, mustards, pickles, smoked meats, & more are all prepared at this great Chefs School restaurant. the budding chefs are on hand to serve you & all food is freshly prepared. along with the onsite 1000 Hills brewery this is an ideal place to come & spend time at. Great hosts & owners Trevor & Desiree Maarschalk are hands on & passionate about their business. a must visit !!

Joined some friends for lunch at the Restaurant run by the chef school. We are alarmed to hear that the second year's had graduated the day before so we were the guinea Pigs for the first serving of the 1st years. We were served craft beer to sample from the brewery on site which was rather good. We ordered a variety of main courses and deserts. To be honest they were not the best I have tasted but perfectly edible. The cheese cake I had for desert was great but the homemade popcorn ice cream was spoilt by the fact that there was an after taste which tasted like the cream it was made from was about to turn. The setting is magnificent and the service by the first year's was also very good. For the food we got the price was a bit steep but I believe that in a couple of weeks the food could improve dramatically.
