It isn’t fine dining, atmosphere is average, pricing of food you would just expect more. Food and service is really good.

We have been regular visitors to Joop’s over the years. I was concerned that standards would slip once Joop left and the restaurant had to operate without his expertise. Fortunately, that isn’t the case. We popped in on a Thursday evening for the Tomahawk steak...special - 1.2kg of steak together with a bottle of wine for R300! Amazing value. In my prime athlete days, I would have demolished this no problem but although I still have a healthy appetite, this monster proved too big for me. I took the remainder home for breakfast! Went with family, and 2 others also ordered the special. Both agreed that it was great value. The bar one milkshakes were a bit disappointing. These came in plastic cups. Not sure why? Not a fan. Would much rather have them in glassesMore

Apparently if you're a walk in and don't have a reservation, you need to wait for your food for close ot an hour When we asked why it took so long, we were told 'it's not Spur bru' The client service was shocking from manager...and non existent from the waiter. We ordered a medium steak and got well done. Other steak order was for medium rare and we got rare. Chips were like the KFC chips not even Spur Got a lecture from the hostess afterwards saying we didn't book, therefore there was a wait for our food. If only she told us that to start with Again no apology; just a lecture So yes pls book and perhaps your food will arrive earlier and you will get a smile and great service...lesson well learntMore

We have eaten at Joops on a number of occasions and this was a lovely lunch until the bill arrived (over R2000 for 6 of us). We were all horrified to see included in the bill, a charge of R50 for 2 jugs of tap...water. When we questioned the waitress, the response was "it's filtered". There was no mention of there being a charge when a second jug was offered. Not impressed at all certainly left a sour taste in our mouths when we left.More

We had the special of 1kg prawns with wine. The prawns were excellent and came with 3 different sauces which was a nice touch. The ribs was also really good and the sides were wonderfully delicious- especially the pumpkin.

We have not been back to Joops for a while so decided to try it again. The steaks are great as is the salad presentation, but the service was extremely slow. We arrived at 7.00pm, and eventually got our order in at around 7.40pm. then...we had a wait a further one hour and 10 minutes for the food to arrive. The menu advised that the very large T-Bone steak would take 45 mins to prepare so we did not order it but they failed to tell us that ordinary steaks would take over an hour. after two bottles of wine and reassuring promises that our order would be out in 10 minutes.....we waited another 35 minutes and most of us had lost our appetites by then. the kitchen seemed to be more interested in serving the adjacent wine bar that the restaurant. we wont be back.More

Eating humble pie! It is very rare for the new owners to maintain the standards expected from a restaurant that became famous because of the legendary talents of the previous owner. So it was when I phoned Joop’s Place to book a table and was...told that the legendary Joop Mol had retired to J Bay that I froze. The lady on the other end obviously sensed my trepidation – could they meet my expectations of quality of food and service that we took for granted when going to Joops. She did such a remarkable sales pitch that I capitulated and reluctantly agreed to book a table. I even warned my guests that we could be disappointed. The same lady [I forgot to get her name] and her staff welcomed us on arrival. Hell, she had pulled out all the stops to impress us by decorating our table and came again to assure us we would not be disappointed. Before we get to the food part let me tell you the place has been revamped and is much lighter and brighter than the former establishment. They have also taken over the old Green Mango restaurant [which seems to be a fatality of the Covid virus lockdown] and converted it into a cheerful bar area. As regulars know Joops is all about red meat but I noticed other items on the menu that seem to offer something for all tastes. We stuck to the tried and tested [in Joop’s day], 2 x Hollandse Biefstuk for guys and 2 x Pepper Steaks for the girls. Hand cut chips for the guys and roasted veggies for the girls. It was amazing! We practically licked out plates! JOOP BE ASSURED YOUR LEGENDARY COOKING SKILLS ARE ALIVE AND WELL IN 9TH AVE MORNINGSIDE!!! Well done to the new owners who deserve every accolade in maintaining the extremely high standards set by Joop.More

We visited Joops Place for a family farewell dinner recently. I didn’t post immediately as I wanted to give management an opportunity to comment but the response from them has been rather pathetic, so let me just go ahead. Our food was delicious. Our server...was very friendly and mostly helpful. What ruined the night was a 90-minute wait between starters and mains. We were the very first table inside that was seated, just after 6PM. We decide to order our starters, wine and mains altogether so as to get the food out in good time. This was important as we had two children dining with us, plus we were a table of eight. Our starters and wine came out in good time and they were all great. Then we waited for our main courses… and we waited and waited and waited… we noted that every single other table was served their mains prior to us, even though we specifically ordered everything upfront to avoid a long wait and had arrived early. Was our order forgotten? Or was the decision perhaps made to put through the smaller table orders first? After waiting for over an hour we called the manager. She replied, “I’m sorry, we are very busy tonight.” Nothing more. It would have been nice if she or our server had come over at some point to let us know what was happening, even just to check on our drinks, but instead it seemed like we were ignored. Eventually, after waiting for an hour and a half, the food came. By this time the kids were so tired they could barely eat. My husband’s steak was cold in the middle. Fridge-cold. We did inform our server who offered to have another one prepared, but he refused after waiting for so long already! It still appeared on our bill, as did everything else. No offers of coffees to apologise or anything like that. My husband had to take the kids home while the rest of us ate our mains, as it was so late. I contacted the manager afterwards to ask for some feedback as to why we were left waiting for so long. The response was: “My apologies about your experience with us.” Such a shame as I understand that these things happen, but when there is no attempt whatsoever to rectify the situation, that is very disappointing.More

A firm favourite and the addition of the cocktail bar just adds to the flavour. The service is always amazing and the food never fails to impress. Reasons we just keep going back, and back!

We celebrated my mum's birthday at Joop's Place. 5 Stars is not enough!!! The food was delicious, wine great and the service truly outstanding! Margriet went to great lengths to make the lunch special.

We love going to Joops even though a bit of a drive. However, when we have visitors, this is the first place we will take them for a meal. Not only is the food always excellent but the atmosphere, wait staff and personal visit by...the owners to each table, makes this a special experience. On our last visit, we discovered there is a butchery in the restaurant and we were able to buy some rib eye steaks etc. and also some eland boerewors and warthog boerewors. We braaied these at home a few days later and the meat and wors had rave reviews from everyone.More

We hadn't visited for some three years or so. There were some design changes and new owners. We were a little apprehensive but we're pleasantly surprised when the same properly cooked steaks were served with an owner recommended wine. We will certainly return again soon.
