About
In the heart of Sandton, on Nelson Mandela Square, is the flagship Johannesburg branch of The Butcher Shop & Grill: an institution in South African dining. For over 20 years, our unmatchable steakhouse has been as much a part of SA culture as sunshine, red wine and red meat. You could say it is a landmark on the culinary landscape (and we're now in Cape Town and the Middle East). But The Butcher Shop is also about family - and the laughter, memories and conversations shared with special people over great food at a top steakhouse. Our family business, handed down over three generations, is famed for its quality produce, extensive menu, separate butchery & deli and 800 passionate staff globally. In Johannesburg we're able to seat up to 600 guests, plus 22 guests in our exclusive private dining room. In Cape Town, we can accommodate 250 guests, with capacity for an additional 40 guests in our private dining room.

Start with the positives. Decent service and a tasty steak. But i had better steaks in Joberg.
Negatives - the expensive Prawns were badly served up meaning it was impossible to get the meat out. Now for the wine waiter.....look, for goodness sake let the customer decide what wine he wants please. Do not try to persuade him to have a bottle that's much dearer. That's not acceptable.
Would i go back there ? No. There are better alternatives.

I ordered the ribeye steak as recommended by our waiter and it was juicy and very tasty. We also ordered the prawns fiesta which was pretty good. They have a wide variety of food so it has something for everyone. Will come back again

Brilliant place, brilliant food. The fillet steak was unbelievably good. The restaurant can cater for any size group - we were in a group of 35. The location is great right in the middle of Nelson Mandela Square. Highly recommended.

A couple of us were visiting South Africa - ButcherShop & Grill was a restaurant we used to go to often - it WAS definitely one of my favorites. I couldn't wait to go back however, what a disappointment from the time we entered and were greeted by the rudest most unwilling staff members. Once seated we had another server who clearly disliked her job and was really doing us a massive favor serving us. Anyway we continued and to tried to look past this. We ordered fillet steaks with a few sides and wine. When the steaks arrived they were so dry we could barely swallow and ended up leaving at least 70% of them. Not once did they ask how our food was and at that point it was better for us to leave -it was a disaster from start to finish. Wish I had gone to one of the other surrounding restaurants in Mandela Square instead of this one, as there are some many others to choose from but as I had good memories of ButcherShop & Grill I was eager to go back. I won't be doing that again that's for sure!

We have been eating in the restaurant on and off since 1990. On all our visits we chose it as number 1 because of consistency, quality, exceptional meat and great wines. We went last week three of us and the whole experience was unbelievably bad. The gravalax was dodgy, too thick and had an old odour. The starter salad was turned up and had been standing around for some time and badly presented. The steaks were ok but they interchanged our guest who was really looking forward to a medium well when he got a rare and was too polite to complain. The mash was lumpy and unattractively presented. The malva pudding was dry without texture. Our waiter was grumpy. All in all disgraceful for what had been for many years Johannesburg’s top steakhouse. It completely lost its way.

Hi Sylvia,
We are glad to hear that you have been with us since our humble beginning in 1994 and can assure you that the standard today has not changed since then. Sure we have some bad moments, but those are extremely rare and do not reflect the true quality of our food, service and atmoshohe.
We sincerely apologise once again and hope to see you, your friends and family at our fine establishment soon.
All the best.

Been here a few times.
Upmarket restaurant situated on the square.
Fresh bread/ butter and sausage in a delicious sauce served complimentary with your drinks.
Plenty of waiters to assist. A good selection of dishes on the menu. Even though it’s the Butcher Shop they do cater for vegetarians and fish lovers. Pick your own cut to have it prepared the way you like it.

Waiter did not care to check in once with us to see if we were okay, or if we wanted anything else to drink. We had to fetch all our own condiments, my wife’s calamari was like rubber, drenched in oil and salt & tasted like feet. My steak had sinew in it, I ordered it medium and got rare. My sweet potato side dish was cold and hard. We will never go back ever again

Famous restaurant for steaks and fillets at Sandton City close to Johannesburg. We started with some fresh oysters and for the main course we ordered a fillet with green pepper sauce and one with bearnaise and a nice bottle of pinot noir from Diemersdal we had a superb lunch before flying back home that night to Europe. These were the best fillets we had during our three weeks stay and served by a professional staff. Compared to European standards very well priced. Highly recommended and definitely worth a visit.

Having visited and supported this establishment on numerous occasions and recently having a fantastic experience at the Cape Town branch we decided to celebrate our daughters birthday at the JHB branch.
What a disappointment.
The online booking system worked perfectly and allowed us to provide detail of the reservation.
We arrived and were seated in a poor area and absolutely ZERO effort from staff or the waiter to the fact that it was a special occassion.
Selecting meat at the butcher section was as if no one wanted to help you. If you were not ordering over a certain weight then it was "Sorry, please order from the menu"
Eventually after the waiter reappeared from his long disappearanxlce and we had ordered, the meat arrived totally underdone for the mediums and over done for the rare. This is not acceptable for this place.
I am sad to say that I will not easily return to this branch and hope they get their stuff together soon to avoid disappointing further guests!

As usual, premier venue with great food. Service was excellent and our party of 7 were all served quickly, efficiently and with humor. Off item requests like creme brûlée were taken and the extensive wine list was at reasonable prices for a UK traveler. Until next time.

Truly terrible experience . 5 of us entered the restaurant at 7-45pm when there were a handful of people in . We had not been served by 10pm . Table of 8 next to us were served steaks which were cold .. dreadful .... and it used to be good .. after 1 hr we enquired about our food . “Yes, it is coming now”
After another hour they admitted they had ‘lost’ the order in the kitchen !!

Obviously the place is very well known as there was a waiting line when I arrived. Fortunately as I was dinning alone I got a seating right away.
The place was packed, noisy and the wait ….
Their choice of cocktails was reduced to 2, despite the long list on the menu.
I couldn’t get the beef carpaccio as there was none, I was told. The waiter kept on pushing for me to have the game carpaccio which was not what I had ordered.
So I skipped the starter and went directly for the T-bone.
The meat was very tender and flavorful however the sauce was extremely salty and so were the sautéed spinaches.
I asked for a glass of red wine and was served a Shiraz who was not bad at all until I noticed that there were un-welcomed flying protein as guets in my glass.
I showed them to the waiter who never even apologized but did try to give me another glass of wine, but at that point I didn’t want to have another glass of wine.
I left the place quite disappointed and oh, by the way, the waiter didn’t even bother give me the change from my bill probably because it was only 6 rands, that I would have left anyway, but it would have been my decision. As I was too tired to argue about the strange behavior of the waiter, I just left.
One thing is sure, I do not recommend that place as a pleasurable experience is not guaranteed.

Went to Nelson Mandela Square, there is a few offerings on the square but we settled for The Butchershop and great choice it was.
I had the Lamb braai chops with a baked potatoe, the best Lamb I have had anywhere in SA, my husband had the seabass and gave it the big thumbs up, daughter's had calamari and kingklip , they too cleaned the plates which is a big compliment to the chef, we ended with a fantastic lemon meringue and cheesecake.
Great experience, we will definitely be back to try the steaks..

Heard about the steaks at the butchershop, husband and i gave it a try for the first time as we havent been out in a while.
We arrived and had temperatures and sanitise protocols and short tracing questionaire - impressive.
We shared the game carpaccio, never had before , very good.
I changed my mind and had the baby kingklip on the bone - exceptional, my husbnd had the ribeye on the bone- best steak he has ever had and he is pretty hard to please.
This reataurant is highly recommeded, prices very reasonable and staff very tentative.

What a disappointment. Uninterested waiters, loud music from the bar next door and the food ... sadly a disappointment as well. Calamari that was obviously just defrosted, undercooked (not grilled as mentioned in the menu) and completely overly marinated in an oil & salt. The same applied to the ostrich with a truly unappetising cranberry sauce. No Angus available .. so went for the local beef. And yes, disappointing as well. No taste, no texture.
All in all, obviously a wonderful concept at heart.. turned into mass production. Definitely not recommend for that special occasion or romantic dinner.
