Sunday lunch in Pretoria under the trees…. May as well have been in Belgium or France at a cafe/restaurant.. you can taste the authenticity in the well prepared, tasty and presented meals 🙏🏻.. verbal menu with a mouth watering rendition of each item on it....Excellent service and wine list. The effects of the pandemic did not pass by this restaurant but rest assured, from the waitrons, the chefs, the owners… everyone pulled together to get La Madeleine firing on all cylinders to make our luncheon a memorable experience. … a World-class restaurant. Thank you 🙏🏻More

This was a horrific experience. Hygiene is terrible, especially considering that we are in a pandemic. Waiters touch utensils and barely wear masks. The quality of food is very poor and very bad value for money. Alcohol is ridiculously expensive. Presentation is very poor!!!

This restaurant has been on my must-try list for ages. Expectations were high. There was a good selection of starters and main course, no doubt well thought through by Chef Daniel. However, the dishes turned out rather average. Dessert was not worth mentioning. Were the...waitrons having an off night? One would never have guessed it was Christmas Eve from the welcome, service nor the decor.More

We went here on a family dinner for my wife's birthday and really enjoyed it. Her birthday was on a Monday and this restaurant opened only for our family. We really enjoyed it and was amazing food. The service from the original chef was awesome....The additional waiters interrupted us quite a few times which was not nice but overall a good experience.More

We planned this 'get-together' about 3 weeks in advance. The goal we sought to achieve from our excursion was an authentic, once-in-a-blue-moon experience or treat. Something we would be spurred to recall in the future. And, oh my goodness, did La Madeleine accomplish this. ~...The Food ~ Our party consisted out of three people: two novices in the realm of cuisine and a former resident of France, with a great deal of experience when it comes to French cuisine -- from small, family owned restaurants in the French countryside to the fine dining found in diplomatic districts. We all agreed . The food was fantastic. Absolutely memorable. None like I have ever experienced before. You chew on a parcel brought before you. You taste the rich, deep fruitiness. But you postpone swallowing. Why? Because you realise immediately that something is -different-. The tastes and flavours you experienced suddenly morph into something entirely different. A smooth, gradual, until now subdued or camouflaged, creamy cocoa. I am not exaggerating when I claim that the tastes and flavours practically dance in your mouth. One moment you are steeped in a realm oozing intensity, and, moments later, you find yourself drifting amongst dazzling, sparkling foams. From one novice to other novices: truly, this is an experience unlike any I have had the pleasure of before. To those with more refined palettes: the experienced member of our outing (a former French resident with boundless experience) gave his fullest compliments to the staff and, above all else, made certain his desire to re-experience this occasion in the future. ~Service~ The patron, himself, and the two staff members assisting customers performed their duties to the fullest extent. Without interrupting our shared gathering, they made sure of it to keep our table clean and tidy, our glasses filled and ready, and our meals timely provided so as to enrich our experience. At one point I noticed one staff member readying herself to collect now emptied plates. In respect to us, however, noticing the continued munching from one of our participants, she unobtrusively kept her distance to afford our slower eaters an ample period of time to enjoy their meal to the fullest. At no point did we feel bothered, or rushed, or timed, or disrespected. On the contrary, we felt respected, valued and our patronage appreciated. The patron shared with us the backgrounds and origins of the meals we enjoyed. We conversed about all manners of subjects and he kindly indulged our curiosities, interests and escapades. ~Value~ I went into this experience expecting to pay a noticeable amount. This caused a shadow of anxiety in me, because why wouldn't it? I left the restaurant feeling wholly rewarded for the expense paid. It blew my expectations out of the water. We took a lot of pictures, more for ourselves than for others -- to serve as a memory of this special occasion, but no picture I share can fully elucidate how special, how extraordinary this experience felt to me. Was it worth the expense? Yes, definitely, and even more so! ~Recommendation~ If you want to experience something special, out-of-the-ordinary, authentic, expertly crafted -- or, stated differently, a true, high quality Belgian/French experience -- you should certainly make a stop. For novices and experts alike, I highly recommend La Madeleine. (Should anyone from La Madeleine see this review: Thank you kindly for the lovely experience. I genuinely appreciate your effort from the bottom of my heart. I will remember this occasion in the years to come; it was truly special.)More

Celebrated a 90th birthday here with a group of 19 adults plus 4 children with a set menu. The food was excellent and the atmosphere even better.

Look and feel of the restaurant is dated. Starters were disappointing, so much so I send mine back. Mains were sub par with no finesse and nothing special to it. For the prices they charge best you visit Black Bamboo or Fermier.

I went with friend for a dinner on a Friday night. A day before to go I enquired by email if the restaurant catered for vegetarians. The written reply was confirmed that they catered for vegetarians and vegans. Once at the restaurant we were presented...with a verbal menu, by the chef, who spoke a very "frenched" English (Really? After 50 years in SA?) All the options contained some meat or animal product. When we asked about possible options for Vegetarians the chef responded that he did not specialised in those dishes but he could help with the request. The food arrived and my vegetarian dish was a mixture of completely overcook and tasteless couscous topped with a bunch of boiled vegetables with a bit of some tasty sauce. The dish was so unappealing and so bland that I left most of it. My friend had fish and according to him it was tasty. I have had the opportunity to travel and taste food in all mayor cities of the world. Upmarket restaurants and humble ones too. The food at La Madelaine was just fine and the vegetarian dish absolutely horrible. The bill was astronomical for what we had. The ambiance of the venue is really not nice. A suburban rundown house with very tasteless scarce decoration. The tables where dressed with standard cloths and the cutlery was average too. What makes people say that this is a great restaurant? I guess it is ignorance of something better. I strongly recommend to avoid this dreadful place. They lie to me when they said they cattier for vegetarian and vegan!More
