It’s decades since I was last at a Mama Roma. It was my parent’s regular back in the day. I reserved a table for my daughter’s birthday earlier this month. It was a comfort to be back as fortunately hardly anything has changed. It’s timeless...and relaxed. Our waitress was cheerful and wonderful. She’s been there a few years and made us feel very much at home. It was buzzing with happy regulars - both young and mature. The owner’s wife is attentive and helpful. We had crispy calamari tentacles to start which were excellent. My daughter loves veal which we both chose. The sides were an unexpected surprise. Both dishes were very good and generous. There were tables of old gentlemen having great fun and enjoying their wine selection and even ladies having an enjoyable lunch on their own. All in all a wonderful nostalgic few hours in a cosy atmosphere. We will be back.More

What a pleasant surprise! Great value. Tasty food from starters to deserts! Alcohol reasonably priced. Excellent waiter. (bland old decor)

I was very disappointed to see that Mamma Roma have elected to keep a very outdated sexist "ladies fillet" cut option on their menu. Instead of calling it ladies fillet just show the sizes. Why put a gender to it? Are women seen as too...weak to eat a bigger portion of fillet steak and therefore require a specific smaller portion? I will definitely not be visiting this restaurant again especially after the defensive and dismissive response I received from management after expressing my concern with them.More

We so enjoyed our meal last night: grilled calamari was perfectly cooked with really tasty lemon & garlic. Mine was served with rice, Mom's with perfectly made mash. My sister's veal marasala was delicious, also with perfect mash. I was delighted that our meal automatically...came with roast veggies, and spinach - which sounds unexciting, but all of it was very tasty indeed. Portions were perfect too. Not too much, not too little - just right! The service was attentive and very friendly too. O, don't forget the dessert offerings - tiramisu and cassata (seldom found on menu's these days) was also delicious. Overall, a fantastic meal. We will be back!More

On a quiet Monday evening we experienced terrible service and disappointing food at what used to be a really good restaurant. Although we have had enjoyable meals here before, we are not regular patrons and this time we felt particularly unwelcome. It started when we...arrived, having booked the ground floor table opposite the bar (my wife has difficulty walking and cannot handle their steps) - only to find two ladies sitting at the table we had booked. This was not the first time we had booked this specific table where it was given away to other people. We took the table alongside, which had no "Reserved" sign on it. The restaurant was near empty and the waitrons stood around the till chatting or taking photos of each other. Nobody served us until a waitress appeared from upstairs and took our order. The owner and his wife were not present, and it was clear that nobody was in charge. Our waitress ("Christina" as per the till slip? - there was none of the usual "I am ... and will be your waitress for the evening") did ask briefly how the meal was going, but when I complained afterwards about the food, she disappeared, having asked another waiter to process my credit card. This left a particularly bad taste, implying intolerance of criticism. My Tagliatelle Carbonara had very little bacon pieces in it and was tasteless, while my wife complained that her Pasta Napoletana was somewhere between tasteless and mediocre - nothing like the same dishes we had eaten at this restaurant before lockdown. Whereas the owner and his wife seem firmly in control when they are present, they have obviously not trained anyone to manage the kitchen and the waitrons in their absence. At least they welcomed us on arrival. This time, an elderly man ignored us until we left, when he smiled and said "Arrivadeci". With this quality of food and service, it should be "Arrivadeci, Mamma Roma".More

We absolutely love Mama Roma and have been coming for years for any special occasion or family celebration. Every time without fail, the food and service has been impeccable. The peri peri livers, veal limone, veal saltimbocca and chocolate bonet are our go to favourites....Warm and friendly staff, reasonably priced and the best Italian food in Cape Town!More

From the minute you arrive you feel like you are back at a family favorite. Exceptional service with food to match. Every person in our party raved about the food. 5 different orders of which I tasted 3. Very impressive. Quality and consistency is why...restaurants like this are full on a Monday evening. Look forward to my next visit.More

Our first visit to Mamma Roma for a birthday celebration was a definite win for us. The food is best Italian in Cape Town. The price is fair and affordable while the service could not have been better. The family run restaurant has been there...for years but that has not taken away from the teams enthusiasm to deliver. Simply put - it is just right!More

My wife and I travel to Cape Town most years, and over the 15 years we have been going to Mamma Roma we have always found the food very good and the staff very helpful and accommodating - but that all came to a grinding...halt the day my wife's handbag was stolen while we were sitting in the restaurant. This happened on the 1st February 2023 – We were seated on the outer edge of the site and my wife’s handbag was beside her on the floor Two thieves – a man and a woman – very skilfully extracted the handbag through the railings and walked away with it, without our noticing that it had happened. The whole thing was captured on CCTV, the police were called (by us and site security – not by the restaurant) and the woman arrested. The other guests in the restaurant were fantastically supportive with one very kind lady even leading us to Claremont Police station. The staff, and particularly the management, in the restaurant were completely the reverse - conspicuous by their absence, offered no support, said nothing, and presented us with the bill for the lunch (which I paid). Frankly, I am appalled by the way the restaurant management treated us – they could not have cared less about what had happened to us. I went back in and suggested they need to put Perspex along the barrier to stop it ever happening again….no interest in that suggestion. A couple of local Cape Town friends have also been in too to protest about the way were treated - and were turned away unanswered. Needless to say, we won’t ever be back to Mamma Roma ever again… The woman was eventually released because she denied knowing the man, even though on the CCTV it is clear they were working together…the man was never found…so they are free to do it again… So, if you decide to eat at Mamma Roma - best of luck to you – and don’t sit near the open barrier in the shopping mall – your possessions may be vulnerable.More

Year after year Mama Roma has managed to rise above the Cape Town fad-based dining scene and deliver consistently excellent food at great prices and with superb service. The old-school decor and ambience just lends to the charm of this wonderful eatery.

Everything here is very good. Food, service and atmosphere. Highly recommended. Veal is exceptional as this is not seen in many restaurants in Cape Town. But also seafood is perfect.

Taken by my good friends and expectations were met. Great Pasta, great bistecchi, great veal dish, nice fresh salad, great espresso and wines good but totally overpriced. Seems to be a regular Cape Town thing!!

The restaurant is definitely popular. It was packed and we were trying our luck when asking if there were any open tables. The waiter went in to check and the manager (I am assuming) told them that we could wait because there were people who...were about to leave. Well, that is before the manager saw us. The tune changed, and we were turned away. I’d assume the food is good since the restaurant is so popular; however, it is not a place I’d recommend to black people. Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere, sis.More
