Excellent Food, Great Atmosphere

This was our first time at Trumps. The place was very busy, but we were seated promptly and the service was friendly and professional. Our food was excellent. My husband had a rump steak and I had the lemon flatties chicken which came with a generous portion of vegetables. The recommended house wine was good too. A special word of thanks to our waitress who ran half way through the shopping centre to bring my husband his glasses which were left on the table. Now that's what I call service!

Fantastic food & awesome vibe

My husband and I decided to have a date night and we settled on Trumps. It did not disappoint :). Our waiter - Ozzy was efficient and knew the menu well but over and above the great service and vibrant atmosphere, we had (by far) one of the best rib eye steaks we have ever had - I would personally recommend the truffle butter sauce. This restaurant has made the list of our top favourite places to dine.

Wow what a transformation !!!

I used to visit Trumps regularly pre 2000 before emigrating. I last visited Trumps before this in 2007. The food was always good as was the service, but the location was great. And now, wow now…what a transformation in upping their game…….Food outstanding, service impeccable, décor really good and the vibe top notch. Butcher shop, Biltong and an envious selection of wines that they sell over the counter. These guys are nailing it from all sides. I don’t know how Trumps do it but there is something like 300 plus seats and the food, second comes so quick. The steak was cooked to perfection, melt in mouth stuff. And I am a steak nut, very fussy. In fact, my wife won’t let me order steak in the UK unless it’s at Hawksmoor because inevitably I end up sending it back. Not here, it was spot on. We received our meals within 10/12 mins of ordering and the place was buzzing. I was blown away. As soon as +100 seater restaurants in the UK get busy they all seem to have a +40 min waiting time. We had some Biltong whilst looking at the menu. I believe it is their own recipe and it was very good. In fact, I was a little bummed as had just spent R1,600 on Biltong in Edleen Butchery before going to Trumps for lunch. I heard Edleen was the best in JHB and wanted to bring a proper taste of home back to the UK. We get Biltong here in the UK but not like the proper stuff. Actually, Trumps Biltong, to be fair, was better than Edleen. I wish I had known beforehand. Grab yourself some Trumps Peri Peri Relish too, its awesome. They also have a Jalepeno Relish which is good, but the Peri Peri is more complex with a depth of flavour second to none. My wife had sushi as she wanted to compare it with Cape Town Fish market on the Waterfront and Codfather in Camps Bay. It was a close call, just pipped by the ones 800 miles closer to the coast. I wonder what Trumps could do with their sushi if they had access to equally fresh out of the ocean produce. It was really good. I will be back. Hopefully a bit sooner next time.

This place is very overpriced with mediocre food. They have a good selection of wines but don’t be conned into going into the special wine cellar with the waiter as they will try to put you on the spot and sell you their most expensive bottle. They will give you a little spiel about why it’s the best bottle, however, if you ask any questions about any of the other wines or the region it came from etc, they will have no idea about anything so it’s clear they’ve just been told to try and sell this one particular bottle for top dollar. We asked if they sold wine by glass the glass and they said they didn’t however we later saw a number of people getting glasses of wine. The food was average at best. The steak was not cooked medium rare (more like medium-well done) and was very tough and chewy. Their special sauces (which cost extra) were also very bland. The service was fair. Tip: if you’re in the situation of being in the stupid cellar with them, ask for a white wine or Rose as they only have one of each in the cellar (which they know nothing about) so it’s a good escape.

Great food, but the service is not that great

I love the food at Trumps, but the service is inconsistent. One week I get great service and the next two visits their service is terrible and because of this, I have decided not to visit the establishment again. Their meat quality is fantastic, and my family has always enjoyed their meals. It is on the pricey side, but well worth it – I just wish they would work on their service more. Their waiters sometimes act unprofessional for example, there were four of them having a loud conversation right next to our table and I had to ask them to kindly move further away so we could have an undisturbed experience. Trumps has an inhouse butchery that sells beautiful cuts of meat.

Always a never fail.

I ordered rump steak served with pumpkin and spinach, along side a French fries and it was amazing!!! I wish my tummy was so big to accommodate the big portion, but hey you can always take it away in a nice box and bag of trumps. Being an airline crew, trumps always give the wine and Amarula free of charge (amazing deal! Always come out here with your colleagues!) Daniel G. service was great. Very welcoming and kind. Trumps is a great package of great food, amazing staffs, meats, sauces and so much more! (Not to mention their wines which are given generously to cabin crew members.) Hey Trumps, keep it up!

Great food, but the portion sizes are grotesque

Difficult to defend such extreme food waste in a country and a continent where so many are starving, but there’s no denying the quality of the food. The ambience is noisy but fun and the service is fast and efficient. It has its own butchery shop and a fine wine store too. I had the Boerewors sausage starter and then the Hake fish platter, which would have fed a table of four quite happily in Europe. Nice bottle of wine though, a lovely Chardonnay with a fun name - Fat Bastard. Liked the experience, but still felt over full the next evening.

Had lunch here on our return from Leopardsong game lodge, and before our late flight back to UK, and felt full even as we boarded the plane about 8 hours later! Would love to have an evening meal here. The pork ribs to start were fantastic, but the fillet steak......absolutely beautiful. Wife had salmon to start, followed by a 'ladies steak' (who she kidding :-) ) which was smaller than my fillet- she was very impressed by both Fabulous service, was fast and friendly, and the food was terrific. Highly recommended.

The restaurant was not that busy surprisingly, the food was excellent and our group of seven all had good meals, the order was correct and the food hot, big portions and of a good quality. The steaks looked really impressive, the lamb chops were a very big portion and I thoroughly enjoyed my grilled calamari tubes. The service was ok we did wait a little while for the bill but not to the point of being a problem.

We were taken back how busy this restaurant was on a Wednesday night. Top notch service and excellent food. I had a delicious fillet and the other 3 various dishes. Nothing disappointed. Being from Canada I still can’t believe how eating and drinking at top notch restaurants in South Africa is so reasonable.

Every time I visit Johannesburg eating at Trumps is a must! The restaurant has the perfect location, in Nelson Mandela square, lovely ambiance, and the food is best in town no matter what you chose from the menu is! Ozzy, our waiter, made sure we have a 5 star experience by being very attentive, very professional and promoting the best products from the menu. Me and my friends will definitely return thanks to him and we will suggest Trumps to our friends as well. Thank you Ozzy and Trumps for such a great experience!

After making a reservation in advance, we were seated on time at this restaurant, however we didn’t receive service for another 20mins. Once alerting staff that we were still waiting for a server, it was a totally uphill experience from there. The food, drinks, & personal service was wonderful despite the shaky start. We were seated right at the front of the outside restaurant area & had a perfect view to Nelson Mandela Square. The steaks were very good, but my favorite dish was the creamed spinach! The price for two steak dinners with sides & cocktails was $60USD. It doesn’t have the atmosphere of a fine Steakhouse, but the food was delightful. For a night out in Sandton, So Africa, we were very satisfied with our experience at Trumps Grillhouse and Butchery.

Steven took good care of us. Bottle of wine was always on the table and glasses were refilled. We were a group of ten this time and really enjoyed the food and the service All the items on the menu are amazing. Creamy spinach and pumpkin is a must as a side. Whenever in joburg having dinner at Trumps and loving it. Keep it up guys

Perfect atmosphere to go with the great food

With its location looking over Nelson Mandela Square it is pleasant to sit at the edge of the restaurant and watch people go by with the business of the inside all going on. The food here was great with good options and some very well matched wine. The steaks had an option of hot pepper sauce and its worth it. Great service from the staff made this a really great experience.
