We tried out The Great Eastern Food Bar in its new Illovo location. The menu is interesting with a great variety of eastern and SE Asian fusion dishes and drinks; sort of tapas style. We really enjoyed everything we ate - including the deserts which were delightful. Certainly worth giving this a try.

Although it’s a small restaurant I would definitely not describe it as cozy - in fact the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired. That said, the food is great! We had a selection of tapas and it was all tasty and beautifully presented. I will definitely be going back.

Asian flavors packs a punch in this restaurant. Vegan options are plentiful and super delicious. I loved the taco and sashimi bowls

In summary:
1. The worst dim sum ever
2. Over salted brown water which cannot be classified as broth, with tasteless hard tofu
4. Hard, over cooked shrimps with veg that is served with 2 dumplings, which is actually thick undercooked dough
5. Veg dim sum with soft potato or something inside .... what the hell!
A disgrace to Asian food. It doesn’t deserve 1 circle.
Tasteless, terrible and a waste of money.

I always love the food at The Great Eastern Food Bar. However on Sat evening the service was exceptionally slow . The waiters were very nice and apologetic but waiting for food was very long . It was delicious when it finally arrived !

I thought the menu was very interesting and the food very tasty. Its a treat to stumble across something so different with such an unusual menu to offer. So full marks on that score. But the problem is that this restaurant will unquestionably go down as the most uncomfortable that I have ever been in. The chairs - funny little benches - are incredibly hard. After 30 mins we had to leave. My butt couldn't take it any longer. What a pity because if the venue was warmer and more comfortable and inviting, I would have loved to have stayed longer and enjoyed the tasty treats on offer.

I was a little taken aback when we first arrived, this restaurant is tiny and hidden away. We sat on uncomfortable chairs around a table in a crowded room. As we arrived well into the lunch period we were seated at the entrance away from the view.
We were offered a set menu or a choice from the a la carte. Four of my party chose the set menu which looked to be very good value and gave them lots of choice within the proposed options. After settling in, it became food theatre. Watching the chefs working in cramped quarters in full view of the patrons was incredible.
The food presentation was matched by the amazing flavour combinations that we experienced. What a surprise and remarkable discovery. Relaxed, informal and genuinely different. The only slight bump was that mother's cheese ramen was too reminiscent of the old mac and cheese.

Yum, pricey but worth it, I could not decide between the coconut milk rice or the kimchi one maybe have both and get takeaways. Small menu but so tasty and nice to have some authentic flavours and ones not easily found in Joburg. The restaurant is small and popular (also some weirdly uncomfortable chairs so bring a pillow). They also have some really tasty ice teas. The starters are also great so come at the beginning of the month hungry.

Remember to book....small establishment and can not accomodate a lot of guests. This was my first visit. Will not be my last. Interesting combinations available. Thankfully the waitress was extremely knowledgable and made various suggestions. It does however feel expensive as you have to order quite a few dishes to have the full experience. We opted for various starters and korean fried chicken as mains. The steamed buns were divine.

We love coming here for dinner! He food is different, beautifully prepared in an all view kitchen. The menu is small but you can take a chance on any o the meals or Meze’s as they are delicious. Be sure to do the dim sums, that is just from another world! Service is very good. Small and quaint restaurant, be sure to book. Go early I you want a table. They’ve got delicious cold teas and juices made on premises(not from bags and shop bottles).
A lovely arty, Melville culture!

This is well worth the trip to the edge of Melville. Situated in the upper floor of the Bamboo Center this is a casual dining experience. Small tables and longer, higher tables with stools supply a great place for drinks and the excellent food. There is even a deck looking out over northern Johannesburg. The menu is not large but caters to those looking for snacky and unusual Asian dishes which are absolutely delicious. We shared several and none disappointed. A great place to meet with friends either for lunch or dinner. It was not busy on a mid-week afternoon but staff advised booking if we hoped to get a table in the evenings.

Amazing food, really amazing! We eat all over the world and this was really top of the list when it comes to eating great food in Joburg, in fact one of my fav in SA.
Small, cosy and playful. Crazy what comes out of such a small kitchen. We'll be back when in Joburg next time!

Our family of four visited The Great Eastern Food Bar for the first time during Restaurant Week and was pleasantly surprised by this incredible Asian eatery in its unassuming location in Melville. The food definitely takes centre stage here. We normally won't order the amount of food that we had through the Restaurant Week set menu, and would probably not have spent as much, but the sublime flavours we tasted were well worth the price. We can't wait to return and try the other dishes on the menu ... or perhaps again order their sashimi tacos, coconut rice, cauliflower bites, etc!
