Have been a huge fan of the Local Grill since it first opened. And is the place I’ll always take out-of-towners or business associates. Best meat, great people (thank you owner Steve - you always make me feel appreciated!) and if there’s bobotie on the...menu, don’t miss it! My favourite ‘local’.More

The restaurant has a laid back, sophisticated ambience. The servers are super friendly and know their steaks! Reasonable wine selection. Have eaten there several times and always have a 300g fillet cooked medium rare. Except for one occasion when the steak was inexplicably a little...tougher than usual, the fillets have been melt-in-your-mouth tender and flavorful. Companions have had the beef medalions and the fish and they too have raved about the food and the side orders. I feel the side salads do need some finesse but they are generally super fresh. The desserts, although a very small selection are also exceptional, especially the bread and butter pudding and the Malva pudding. Many rate the restaurant as average, but for the level of personalised service one receives consistently, the focus on quaity of the steaks, and the atmorsphere with little, if any, patronising attitude from the staff, which I find annoying at most restaurants, The Local Grill can't be beat!More

We went there in January with family, including 3 kids under 15. Food was wonderful and the service attentive and friendly.

This is one of the oldest (possibly the oldest) “dedicated” steak houses in Joburg. It does the hanging, aging and preparation of the meat on site. The steaks are both dry and wet aged for up to 60 days and the cuts are always personally...selected by the restaurant owners. They do food parings in the tasting room. And also have self preparation events. If you haven’t been before do yourself a favour and go.More

This was our first time visit to the local grill and if possible I’d have given it 3.5* as it was good - better than average, but not quite very good. My wife and I went here for a date. The restaurant itself is well...laid out with modern deco and a bit of cow hide on the walls here and there for character. The waiting staff were very efficient and helpful and we got everything quickly - wine, starters and mains. For starters we had grilled calamari. It was exceptionally well cooked and seasoned but then liberally covered in what I suspect is shop bought sweet chili sauce. Sauce was a bit too much and too sweet for my liking. For mains steak is the thing here. The range of options is bewildering. You can choose everything from what the cow was fed on, to how it was aged. We asked our waiter what was the best and he recommended the sirloin on the bone, so we did that. The steak is served with a giant bone on top, which feels very cave man. The main issue was that the steak just wasn’t that good. In quality, seasoning, smell and flavor it reminded more of what you’d expect at a tshisa Nyama braai place, rather than a high end steak restaurant. Perhaps that is deliberate- many of the customers were clearly tourists and so I guess it might be trying to give an authentic mzansi feel to the meal. On reflection after leaving it seems to me that it would be better to have a smaller less confusing menu with a few excellent options, rather than a bewildering range of good ones. I did enjoy my steak. Just from seeing the menu and how seriously they take it, i had super high expectations that were not met. The bill was also quite high despite us picking an budget wine. I came away wondering if I should have just got for a tshisa nyama night and had spare money for some extra drinks! I guess That wouldn’t have spoiled my wife as much though !More

Actually, The Local Grill could be a family spot, a business moment, a romantic interlude or any other group - so versatile it is! We took a family group (aged 8 to 83) for a farewell dinner recently, and there was something for everyone. A...tour of the cold-rooms and explanation of meat cuts and ageing for the foodies, a cocktail from the bar for those wanting a different experience, and great ice-cream & hit chocolate sauce for the little guy at dessert time! The staff were attendant without being overbearing, and the vibe (for a Monday evening) made the evening pleasant and enjoyable.More

If you’re looking for something special for a meat appreciative group, look no further. I was lucky to be invited in just such a group and to be seated in the special room after being given the grand tour of the meat safe and being...shown the aging process and controls and the kitchen. A menu planned around a selection of superb presentations of a wide variety of beef cuts was complimented by good suggestions and service. Give this somequality time and don’t rush! It’s worth dining slowly with a good wine selection adding to your enjoyment!More

We had a good dinner, but have had much better steaks. The steak was not tender as I had hope, and didn’t have much flavor. We ordered the 500g aged T-Bone, and came out smaller than expected.More
