Grass Roof began with a dream to open a coffee stand for passers-by in Seaview and Sardinia Bay. This dream grew into something much bigger, and with it our desire to give our community a place to come together and celebrate wholesome living, wonderful food, and the great outdoors.

Sunday afternoon drive out

The atmosphere at this establishment is very relaxed and tranquil.It has very nice indoor as well as outdoor facilities and is definitely kids friendly. The farm shop has a variety of fine goods and delicacies but pretty pricey. Overall a pleasant experience.

Beautiful location

Outstanding location, beautiful shop and amazing service. I went with family and their food was lovely (generous burger, pizza). I ordered nachos and they were very disappointing- salsa was a teaspoon full on a huge serving and had cucumber in it?! Mince has absolutely no flavour or spices. And worst of all, the 'refried beans' were literally kidney beans boiled with potato. So disappointing :(

Always enjoy the atmosphere at Grass Roof and service generally excellent. I did notice lately that the prices of food has gone up significantly. I bought some veggies from the stall and ordered a cup of standard coffee - probably the highest I have paid for take away coffee in PE, ever. R 32. My family ordered vegan pizzas, and again at R 180 per pizza, the most expensive in town! Not sure I can afford to eat here any more - Pity!!

Disgusting! found a snail in my breakfast

Where do I begin, firstly avoid this place on a Saturday! It is extremely busy and the waiters are rather unfriendly and strut around as if they are doing you a favour. We waited 20 minutes for our coffee order which arrived without teaspoons so I guess I was supposed to stir my sugar in with my fingers? Then waited another 35 mins for the breakfast to arrive, which to my utter horror, had a snail attached to the rocket leaves. I called the waiter over and informed him of this to which he responded : 'that they see this often'. Seriously? If you see this often, how about washing the rocket leaves before serving them. I then asked if the rocket was washed? To which he mumbled something incoherently and walked away red faced! Clearly it was not washed. I asked that the plate be taken away and the bill brought as I had already lost my appetite. Such blatant disregard for hygiene standards that I hate to think what actually happens in the kitchen. I will definetly NOT be going back!

Wonderful place to take the kids as their playground is awesome and you are surrounded by a lovely herb garden, however we won't be visiting again. I was the only person there but it took me three attempts to find someone who would let me order a drink. Then they charged me R32 for a latte and added an extra R10 to make it decaf - R42 for a coffee! Considering decaf beans from Port Elizabeth's local roastery are only 6% more expensive retail, I have no idea how they justify charging R42 for a cup of coffee.

Would never go back. Sat for almost an hour and a half waiting for the food, only for it to arrive and be terrible. I ordered a sandwich and burger for my boyfriend and I with gluten free alternatives. They charged me for EVERY SLICE of gluten free bread. The bread was stale and inedible. Not once did the waitress offer more drinks to us and so we sat with no drinks, for the entire time waiting for our meal. The zucchini and sweet potato fries were basically WHOLE zucchinis and sweet potatoes, absolutely no effort. Shocking. Would never go back.

Terrible experience!

I will neither return to nor recommend this restaurant. We waited for more than an hour for our food and when it arrived it was cold, some items were missing and we were served one meal that we did not order. I mentioned this to the manager and all that they said was 'Sorry'...literally that's all they said. When will restaurants realize that patrons expect and pay for a pleasant experience? If they don't get it they go elsewhere and in a world of social media they influence others to go elsewhere also.

Great @ Grass Roof

This restaurant is set amidst fields, gardens, a farm stall, trails for running or mountain bikes and adjoining a farm stall. Several indoor and outdoor seating options. The menu offers a broad variety of dishes ranging from pizza, salads, burgers, lamb and other main dishes to sweet treats, including waffles. My companion sipped on a refreshing mint cooler whilst I enjoyed a shrimp & avo salad, recommended by the waitron. The presentation was refreshing, the dish was tasty and flavourful and it was ample in size. The service was excellent. Ideal for a meal with friends or family.

Expired Produce & Unprofessional Customer Service

I was so disappointed at the vegetables I bought from here. The first time the only thing wrong was that there were tiny spiders in the spring onions. I grow my own vegetables at home so I am aware these things happen, but I am not running a shop that is expected to meet a certain standard. That is not even a problem for me initially so I ended up going back, the second time , when I got home the potatoes were fine but the beans were full of mold and I missed it in the shop. Thereafter, I thought, I'll give them another chance and I was presented with soft potatoes (I got sick the next day and hoping it wasn't that but it is the only thing I had eaten that day that could have caused it). I threw all of the potatoes away and I added the brinjals in the bin right next to it as it was hollow to the touch and when I sliced it, it was glossy brown and green. To top it all off, I stood in line waiting to be helped only for another person to be assisted first that was standing behind me. The person hired to respond to social messages and reviews is incredibly rude and immature and is the reason I will be making sure my review will not only be online.

Perfectly Done

This Cafe is a great location for family, group, couples & friends to meet at after going out to Sardinia Bay or doing any of the local activities. The menu is extensive, creative, delicious and satisfying. The premises are clean, modern, and along with the attentive staff, even the resident cats are good hosts. The principal chef changes the menu so repeat visits may offer new choices.

Excellent food and service

We ate here a couple of times, brunch/breakfast at Grass Roof during our holiday in SA from the UK. Both times we had excellent and friendly service, even though it was quite busy the second time on Easter Saturday morning. We all enjoyed all the food we had, very tasty, well presented and copious portions. Our twin boys (8 years old) also appreciated the garden and play area.

Understaffed and too big for its boots?

My Mom and I stopped in there on Tuesday at about 12.30. Just for 2 coffees. We are local people who regularly support their farm stall. We were not greeted by any staff member and we found our own table. We had to shift the concrete base umbrella ourselves -- no staff member even cared that we needed help and there were plenty running around that we saw. We waited for 45 min in vain to get 2 coffees. In that time we got up to find staff and gave our simple order, they did not bring the order. We had to find someone twice more to remind them. No interest. We left due to the appalling service without coffee. Pity that service is so poor.

Wow came away absolutely stuffed. Really good menu, loads of variety. Staff really friendly and helpful. Have eaten in here twice now on our holidays and would highly recommend. After lunch its great to go into the shop and have a good browse and can highly recommend the hand made dog biscuits.

Food choices were reasonably good, could do with more vegetarian options. Setting lovely. Covid protocols followed as far as I could determine. Drinks and food a bit slow to arrive, but it was extremely busy even early on. Waitress friendly. Would go again

We had a Lovely Sunday afternoon Lunch at the Restaurant. It was full so we had to wait a bit, but probably not more than 10 Minutes. Our food was fresh, delicious and hot! I had a pizza, that had more than enough fillings/toppings on! No need to “fish” for them! The place is ideal for people with Kids, as there is a lovely play area! The deli/farm stall ia lovely with all sorta of confectionary, jams, craft etc.
