Hidden gem

Phoned up the day before to book and to let the chef know that we were going to be having the steak. Limited menu and fresh produce such as mussels generally have to be pre-ordered to maintain freshness. Seating comprised of white painted benches and tables. The steak was absolutely superb as was the creme brûlée. The chef chatted to us quite a bit as they were quiet and the owner of the Nothando Backpackers ( which is where the restaurant is) also joined us for a while at the end of the meal. Chantelle the barmaid / waitress was also lovely. This is some of the best quality food I have eaten regardless of price but was also unbelievable value for money. It will not belong before we return to sample some of his other delights. The address is now 5 Wilder Street and not as shown.

Great chef

This is a restaurant located inside the Nothando Backpackers hostel. As I was staying at the hostel, It was easy for me to book my meal in advance (they get sold out very quickly) and to get to the restaurant when It was ready. I imagine that someone that comes from outside the hostel might think the place is unusual for a restaurant, because people staying in are walking around in commom areas nearby and there's not a waiter standing there as you are used to see in other places. Nevertheless, they have really great food with the best price you can get. At the end, the chef goes table by table to ask for feedback and talk to you. If you are in Plettenberg, this is a hidden gem.

Best steak in Plettenberg Bay

Chez Laurent has moved, sometime in the past few years, to the Backpackers up the road. The fillet at poivre is thankfully just as good as always. Perhaps the most surprising is the addition of a fantastic chicken Schnitzel. The surroundings don’t win any prizes but the quality of the food is unbeatable.

Très bien! Or even more than that. For visitors not staying at Nothando (shame, because Chef also makes croissants for breakfast) call for a reservation! We had a wonderful dinner with pommes frites, mussels for me and steak for my partner. It was just amazing and felt pampered! It was fresh and just delicious! Merci beaucoup again!

Must eat in Plettenberg for steak lovers!

Best Steak in SA combined with funny and superb Chef! The Steak was perfectly cooled. We also had breakfast and french Croissants! Also very Food. Worth a visit with or without staying at Nothandos.

Fab food and hosts

Hubby and I went here last night ... unfortunate for the owners but fortunate for us it was unusually quiet so we got to chat to Laurent .. Maryna and Chantelle ... the fillet steak was heavenly ... but the creme d la creme was Laurent’s creme brûlée 👌 ...the best you will ever taste in the world and my hubby is an expert on them .. as for the cost for us both was incredibly cheap for the standard of food ... and I’m not partial to red wine but what Laurent recommended was very very good too ... the whole experience was very casual and relaxed ... your going there for the food not for a fancy style chic restaurant what more could you want .. let the food do the talking x we will be back many times while here until mid March ..

BESt kept SECRET - Unique home French cooking at its very best - YUMMY!

The place is a little unoique nook in town, fire burning, ambience great and expect the very best of home cooked France! We had Rare Fillet Steak topped with a green corn pepper sauce - it was the best I have ever eaten in my life. It was served with very crispy yummy chips to die for!!!! The table next to us had a large bowl of freshly picked mussels in a creamy sauce - I am going back to have this bowl ou mussels. We brought our own wineand was charged corkage, but not ver charged as we had 2 bottles but only had to pay corkagefor one. This is a restaurant by owner Chef Laurent to return to again and again.

Simply the BEST

This has to be the beat cooked fillet steak, with deicious peppercorn sauce and frites you will taste anywhere. 12 of our large family gathered last night at Chez Laurant for a casual’ catch up’ get together. We were given a great welcome. Every steak was cooked to perfection and served with the totally delicious sauce and real frites and fresh salad. The lovely Laurent and his staff provide us with a fun very casual, cosy place tucked away in Plett. It’s just so good (and rare) to go a restaurant and know exactly what you’re going to get and always know it’s going to be very good and the BEST value. There are just few menu options and one should book. A great fun, delicious evening had by all. Thank you to Laurent and staff . Lynne and H Garmany and ‘The Firm’

Superb food

Tonight was one of the best dinners we have had in Plett for quite some time. My son and I had the fillet with peppercorn sauce - which was superb. My meat was cooked to perfection as ordered- medium rare. My wife had the chicken schnitzel with a delicious mushroom sauce. The only complaint is we were too full to eat dessert. Highly recommended to all foodies. Compliments to the chef! Very reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit when we return to Plett.

Chef Laurent makes a mean pepper fillet still

Very good steak still. A good rustic dining experience where you share tables with others or eat on a low table or around a fireplace. No other choice except how you'd like your pepper fillet steak - rare or medium rare!. Good quality though and a fun dining experience. Efficient waitrons. Be sure to have cash with you last time we were there. I think Laurent is making a name for himself there.

Amazingly Good Steaks

We have eaten at Chez Laurent before at the Market and loved it but at the new location it is even better with a wider menu and now with a drinks licence. The new small restaurant is quaint and has a great atmosphere and the service is good. The steaks were as good as anything I have had anywhere in the world and the price is ridiculously cheap (R170) for a 300 gram fillet. The fries and salad are good and a real improvement from those on the earlier visits. A nice house red wine with a large glass at R20! A must visit restaurant but you need to book.

Wonderful food and special service

We have visited Laurent many times before ,but now for the first time at his new restaurant inside the Nothando Backpackers Lodge at 3 Wilders Street in Plettenberg Bay. It is best to reserve and discuss menu options with Laurent himself at +27764635764 (phone or SMS),because all ingredients are super fresh. The Steak with Pepper Sauce is the best you would have had anywhere in the world ,with his shoestring fries and salad. The Chicken Schnitzel with super smooth Mushroom Sauce is very good for white meat lovers There is also a Vegetarian Dish / Pasta available. For dessert Creme Brulee is superb with a classic Tarte Tatin - both exceptional. Try not to miss out on his fresh Saldanha Mussels with Garlic Mayonnaise (home made like all other sauces) Mussels must be ordered a few days in advance to find their way from Saldanha Bay to Plettenberg Bay. Superb Steak Sandwiches must be ordered in advance ,because fresh ciabattas must be available. Wine,soft drinks and beer is available at very reasonable prices. Laurent thank you once again for superb food and exceptional service. We shall definitely visit you again and again. Be sure to visit Chez Laurent to experience classic French Bistro Food in South Africa
