I was very unhappy with my experience at the Rat. It used to be an icon, but now it is just a poor excuse for one. The food was terrible too… my rump steak had such a thick tendon that I could not eat it.

We arrived in Grahamstown after the students had left, otherwise I guess this place would have been packed. We couldn't find many places open in town but this friendly pub was excellent, good pub food, good price and friendly staff
Maybe we’ve been spoilt on this SA holiday because everywhere we’ve been has been so welcoming. Server said very little and indeed the downstairs pub atmosphere felt flat. Surprising for a Friday teatime. My wife said her Leopard Leap Chardonnay was very good but my draught...craft beer was just ok. My wife enjoyed her fillet steak whilst my rump steak with the avocado sauce was too fatty. Only consolation was meal price seemed good value.More
Ordered the pepper steak pizza pie....... only onions inside with a a dash of steak I think? Very very slow service too 😡
Great local pub to get together with friends. Great pizzas and excellent burgers. Starters on menu highly over priced!!!
We stopped for lunch on a slow afternoon. My PH met up with some others & we had a good time. It has normal pub food. I had very good fish & chips. The staff was friendly.
Hadn't been to the Rat for a while, had my family in town over the long weekend and decided to take them for supper. Had the most awful service, unfriendly waitress who told us to pay the bill after she served our food because her...shift was finished and then all the other staff ignored us, or had terrible attitudes, had to beg and plead and argue to get a takeaway box for the pizzas. The pizzas are good but not worth going back to have to deal with untrained and unfriendly staff. Rather try Ginos or the Pot-Hole and Donkey, or Frasers for better pizza and better service.More
My years on the planet are many but I never liked pubs where you have to shout to be heard. A very popular destination with the deafened youth.
Great little pub with very friendly staff and good food. Well worth a stop off. The meals are very large so don’t order the upsized meals or you’ll need a take home bag. We couldn’t finish the normal size meals. The “milkshake” dessert was a...meat do!More
We were hesitant to go here during the National Arts Festival but heard that they serve the best pizzas in town and gosh, we were not disappointed. Their pizzas are so amazing. It's a typical pub - so if you have children with you then...I would advise leaving by 9pm latest. Luckily there is a choice of different dining areas, depending on your mood.More
You can expect a traditional pub menu. Great pizzas and steaks. Downstairs is for families mainly, upstairs is a lot more lively, more of the pub atmosphere
The food and service were very good and especially the fish. So don;t be put off with the appearance of being only a sports bar.
To experience Grahamstown, one has to visit The Rat & Parrot. Is is an ideal location for the students studying and living nearby. The decor is unique and stimulating. A fine selection of food and drink. I'm looking forward to finishing my week with another...visit.More
When your'e planning to catch-up with your grahamstown friends the Rat & Parrot is a convenient place to meet or catch-up on a rugby game if one doesn't mind a loud student riot of course..Lol. Serves great steaks and beer to go with your meal.
The pub is large and if sport is your thing there are screens everywhere. But it also serves great beer and very good steak. Pizzas were ok. They have a large wood fired oven. But I’ve had better. Crusts are thin and crispy but too...much rubbery cheese for me and it’s not fresh mozzarella which might be rather harsh given where we are! Great service though. Really friendly people and efficient too. The steak was amongst the best I’ve had.More
