Being new arrivals in Grahamstown and having driven past the Cock House often, not realizing that there was a restaurant, we were thrilled to discover this hidden gem. Advance booking is required, though as a couple we were lucky to be fitted in without a...reservation. The menu is that of a bistro - a small selection of deliciously prepared dishes. The restaurant is cosy with a fire adding warmth on winter evenings. Friendly service. The Cock House is steeped in settler history and was the former home of author Andre Brink who lived there between 1971 and 1981.More

This restaurant has a lot of vintage to it! The food you enjoy complements the surroundings... Do not miss this experience when you are in Makhanda!

After a day of great excitement at our daughter's graduation, it was wonderful to step into Nordens, & take a seat in the charming dining room. The food was absolutely delicious - lamb shank, pork belly & fillet were all superb, & all served with...lovely vegetables. The staff were friendly & welcoming. Due to a very busy grad-night, our meal took a while to be served, but we were kept informed, & actually enjoyed a chance to chat & drink some chilled wine after our busy day. &, when the meal did arrive - it was well worth the wait! Cooked to perfection, generous portions - not a scrap left on any of the 4 plates! Will be back, when next in Makhanda!More

Traditional SA food with a classy twist. The late great Nelson Mandela stayed there. Can be a little pricey, but still good ambiance and food.

Just dinner on this trip but so much better than last year; good food, good value, and nicely served. I will return.

Had a farewell dinner for 4 adults - food poor and not good experience; felt that the waiters just wanted you to finish and go. We were the only people in the restaurant and it was not late. I had the pork belly whuich was...the 'recommended dish". It was awful. I think they had left overs they were trying to get rid of. The vegetables were stody - lump of pumpkin or similar, potatoes , spinach - hopeless. supposed to be fine dining! forget it. rather go to the SPUR.More

Lovely ambiance. Personal attention from the manageress. Big log fire. Food recommendations were spot on - very tasty food. The three of us all chose something different - we all raved about our food. The complimetary glasses of gluhwein were a very nice touch!

I stayed at this guest house for a week while attending classes at Rhodes. What a pleasure! Wonderful and patient host and charming waitresses. We were a group of diverse individuals and they tried their best to keep everybody happy. Arriving in your room in...the late afternoon was wonderful, since a warm room was awaiting you! Thank you so much!More

I was not responsible for booking this accommodation but was pleasantly surprised by it. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. My room was immaculate and very comfortable. The bed and pillows were perfect and the combination of aircon and dstv allowed for a fantastic...nights sleep. The shower was modern and clean. So far so good. Will definitely stay here again on my next trip here.More
