We had our company dinner at Grand Palace Restaurant here 2 weeks ago and it was a good experience despite some little setbacks. Yes…I agree with many other writers that good service is not found here…and throughout the hospitality industry in Malaysia, it is rare...if you find good friendly service. Let me start on with the food…we had the Prosperity Organic Yee Sang, which I like very much and a little extraordinary. It was followed by a double-boiled Village Chicken Soap with abalone. This was indeed tasty. The Steam Grouper Fish was also fresh and good. Roasted Chicken was followed next…it was good. The Baked Prawn with Superior Soya Sauce was nicely done. Stuffed Golden Beancurd was equally good. I was surprised by the Palace Fried Rice with Fish Roe. This turned out to be very good. Most importantly, the food was not infused with MSG, which will make you thirsty later. For this, I will come back again.More

The food tastes good, however the service is very lackluster. I specifically asked if the portion size is small & suitable for one person, the waitress said it is, but when the food arrived, it was meant for 4 persons! The cup that they gave...me was not washed properly. It had several large obvious food stains from the previous customer, and yet they served it to me! I didn’t notice it and drank it, YUCK! I informed the waitress & she didn’t even say a word/apology. Very poor service & dirty cupMore

I was in KL for a work meeting and we had a team dinner at Grand Palace. The food and service were OK, but nothing special.

We have ordered a set menu 2 months back with Steamed Fish Giant Grouper. However they served us a different dish and when we questioned them, the person attending to us explained they made a mistake in menu translation. And after much persuasion, they decided...to change to steamed fish. We were shocked to be served fish slices instead of a full steamed fish. Felt a bit CONNED about the whole episode.More

Being a local and frequent patron of pavilion KL i have not tried their dim sum. With some frienda visiting and shopping at pavilion, i was keen to let them try the dim sum. Well i got a shocked. The dim sum was the lousiest...that i have ever eaten. Even worse than the dim sum stalls at the food court. Service level is just equally bad. I complaint the prawns smelt foul and let most of the food remain on the table. Well nobody bothers to ask why.More

The food was not as described and when this was politely mentioned to the manager she refused to acknowledge this. Throughout my two week trip to Malaysia this was undoubtedly the most disappointing food and service.

Wow, scrolling through so many bad reviews found here, I wonder if this is the same restaurant. Located at the 6th floor in Pavillion, Grand Palace is a big Chinese Restaurant and you walk into a big spacious dining hall. As I always appreciate dim...sum, I think the dim sum here is good. Service wise can be improved as apparent with other reviewers. Price is above average.More

Food is good and reasonably priced for the quality. Do not expect highly polished waiter from fine dinning restaurants who will serve you hand and feet.. its a typical Chinese restaurant 1. Grouper with Fungus - fish slices are generous and very fresh 2. Black...pepper beef cubes - very tender beef and very well done 3. Peking Duck - reasonably priced (they will run out if you are late, best for lunch), nicely cooked 4. Fried Rice (with meat from Peking duck) - very good serve and well flavored 5. Prawns with Garlic sauce - prawns are very fresh and a good dishMore

I don't usually write reviews of places I've visited but feel I owe it to any 'foreigner' looking for Chinese food in KL in future to communicate my infuriating experience at the Grand Palace. I have not experienced such denial over the quality of food...and lack of care over customer satisfaction ever before in a restaurant. General summary: Pros - helpful, hard working staff, Cons - food quality was mediocre at best, overpriced & incorrectly described food, & obnoxious management. Read on if you want the detail. On placing our food order we were enthusiastically advised by the manager the speciality of the house was the suckling 'whole' baby pig and we should try that. I'd had this before elsewhere and didn't take much persuading it would be worth a try. (It later became obvious the reason being was that the manager was keen to offload the remnants of a pig to us, of which all that remained was the skin, and unfortunately for us she was successful in doing so) The 'suckling pig' came out along with the other dishes and was simply about 70sqcm of roasted skin. No meat whatsoever. Imagine what a reverse engineered pack of Mr Porky XL pack of pork scratchings with any fragment of meat removed would look like, with a baby pig head and four trotters added for asthetic benefit. It soon became clear that what we had received was indeed once part of a 'whole pig', but it had since had all of its insides removed and presumably sold to someone else. After each of us sampled the 'skin' we agreed that this wasn't what we'd been told to expect as a 'whole pig', and bearing in mind it cost 220MYR (approx £40) I called over the manager to mention this. (There was a sideline issue of the curry sauce advertised not being applied which I also brought to her attention and I was informed that this was because the chef had made the decision not to add the curry sauce as he knew we were 'foreigners' and didn't think we would be able to handle it - I'm not going to go in to that one as you can draw your own conclusions of the kind of corners cut and excuses made in this place for serving inaccurately advertised food). Had the issue been addressed professionally by the manager, accepting that this wasn't what had been promised/sold to us at the outset and that the price of the dish would be discounted suitably in the bill at the end then I would definitely NOT be writing such a review. Instead, even after making the manager aware the 'foreigners' actually had a fairly good idea of what a suckling pig was meant to look like, I was met with total denial, with the manager explaining that a pigs skin represented the 'whole' pig exactly as she had described and that the price charged was the price we needed to pay. Absolutely no concessions on the bill would be made. I explained that based on my multiple previous experiences of suckling pig in both China and some trailblazing outposts of Chinese cuisine in Lancashire the dish normally included skin, meat and ideally a bit of bone, as she had led us to believe in her earlier description of 'whole pig'. I was told I was wrong and that maybe that's what happens in China, but that's not how they do things in the Grand Palace in KL. Even if this was the case, what we had received was certainly not 220MYR worth, it was maybe equivalent to a 30MYR (£5) dish at best. In my book this kind of mistake is forgiveable as I understand mishaps happen in a busy kitchen, so long as it is appropriately recognised and responded to. Alas it was not. On speaking with the manager as diplomatically as possible at great length and getting nowhere it was clear she had no intention of giving up her advantaged position, having offloaded a plate of skin to a bunch of tourists for a premium price. I am a big fan of Chinese food but this place fell below expectations on the food quality, and far below on customer service. We paid up in full, but this place puts profit before customer service at any cost and anyone thinking of parting with their cash at this place should be aware of this experience. Nb we were not asked at any point by the staff whether the food was to our satisfaction. The Grand Palace didn't seem bothered about that at any point. Conclusion: you can get much better food in KL for far less money and without any of the aggravation. This place is just a bad example.More

I recently entertained some guests from overseas and took them out to dinner at the up market Pavilion Shopping Mall along Jalan Bukt Bintang here in Kuala Lumpur. Chose this Grand Palace Restaurant because I wanted to treat them to good chinese food in a...nice restaurant. Service was very good as we were ushered to our table very quickly and had a baby chair ready for my 1 year son. With the recommendation of restaurant manager I ordered vegetable + pork soup, fish paste with vegetables, pork belly with salted fish and fish maw . They were all very tasty and I especially liked the pork belly with salted fish! Chowed down 2 bowls of rice because it was so good! Ambience was good and as the tables were slightly further apart from each other meant that we could have a nice conversation amongst ourselves without having to raise our voices. When came the time to settle the bill it only came up to RM 250! Pleasant surprise as it did not cost too much for such a grand restaurant. Good place to choose for a good meal.More
