Toyo is on a side that you would t expect it to be on. This man has been through so much and he has succeeded in his dream. Watch street food on Netflix and you will have a deep appreciation for Toyo-San. The place is...small and quaint but the service is fast. The food is absolute delicious and Toyo is a very funny man and very outgoing. I had an excellent , although short time there today and will be going back shortly. If you are in Osaka you simply must go and experience Toyo!More

Don't let the ramshackle appearance dissuade you. Toyo's izakaya is worth the hype. Showing up at 30 minutes before it's advertised open time of 1530, the stand up 'tachinomi' tables were already filled with patrons on this Wednesday afternoon. It was notable that nearly all...of them were Japanese because sudden fame, the new reality in the social media era, has turned many Japanese iconic locations into western destinations which eventually push locals away. Tokyo's Robot Restaurant comes to mind, as does Genki Sushi in Shibuya, where Japanese are the small minority these days. Even Shibuya's Halloween phenomena is losing its Japanese uniqueness as tourists last year seemed to make up a much larger portion of the crowd than it has in previous years. But Toyo still delivers despite his Netflix fame. He's an entertaining and jovial man, eager to please with a pose for photographers, but, essentially, by serving good portions of great food for a fair price. There was no evidence that he was taking advantage of his customers with his new found fame. My friend and I had a couple of beers, shared a large portion of his famous flamed tuna cheek, and generously portioned tuna sushi and a dish of fresh, lightly pickled, scallops and spent less than $25USD.More

We came because of the Netflix Show, knowing the chef’s story, we had to come try out his food and have a look at his kitchen. This is a standing restaurant, food are served quick and limited options are presented, but they are all so...very yummy! The fatty toro just melt in your mouth, the sea urchins are fresh and sweet, the way the eel is grilled made it melt in your mouth. I can’t wait to visit Toyo again!!!More

Food is really good. The sashimi melts in your mouth literally. Great paired with beer. Worth the wait.

The food more than lives up to the hype: aside from the incredible freshness of the fish, Toyosan adds little touches - yuzu in the seafood salad, shiso leaf in the tuna roll - that sets his food apart. A true master and a super...friendly guy.More

Like a lot of folks I first saw this place on the Netflix Street Food special, which is a great series if you haven't seen it. Many of the locals in Kyoto/Osaka still don't know about this place. We only waited about 10 minutes. The...people there customers and staff alike are all really friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. Everything is incredibly fresh. We had the eel, tuna cheeks, salmon, tuna, and fatty tuna. Sake and beer are the beverages that we had. They may have other beverages. Not sure. Be warned this is a standing only restaurant. There are no seats. Well worth the visit and very reasonably priced!More

Waited half an hour +, in line from 14:00-ish... and got a table next to Toyo's grill. We tasted 90% of the menu. All delicious. The crab and the tuna was a favourite. And Toyo himself is really a character. We really enjoyed the visit!...Selfies... no prob either.😀More

Great food. Watched the Netflix street food episode and planned to visit on our next Osaka trip. You won’t be disappointed. We got there about 4pm and had to wait 1/2 hour in queue. Shared a table with some lovely locals. Recommend fatty tuna. Toyo...is brilliant. Such a laugh and posed for photos with customers. Definitely going backMore

So wonderful to meet the one and only Toyo! What a passionate and fun man with an interesting life story. Watch the Netflix episode before you visit him and it will make sense. Be prepared to wait, stand and spend lots - worth it though!

After watching the Netflix special on Osaka’s street foods, I was afraid that this place wouldn’t live up to the hype. But I was way wrong! Chef Toyo is an amazingly fun and energetic guy who always makes time for photos including the dinner rush....I couldn’t say enough nice things about him and his staff, but definitely the highlight of my Osaka trip and will definitely come back to see him again!!! By the way, if you’re a female, he definitely enjoying taking pictures with you too! One tip is to try the broiled tuna cheeks, that way you can watch his flame thrower show and enjoy the moist and delicate seared tuna with your meal.More
