My wife and I last dinned at The Big Steer about 20 years ago and had a bad experience and had not been back until last night. Another family member suggested we gather for dinner there so we decided to try them again. The food...and service both were fantastic. The dining room however was freezing cold. Our entire dinner party had to wear our winter coats while we dined. Most of the people in our dining room did the same. Our waitress said she believed “they” had been messing with the heat control and that it had been a cold dining room lately. The experience would have otherwise been very good. The overall value of the prices compared to the dining experience at The Big Steer (without penalizing it because of the cold dining room) was so-so at best. I understand beef market prices are high now, but compared to the chain steakhouses like Texas Roadhouse and Outback, TBS prices were higher yet. The non-beef prices for pasta and chicken were substantially higher. For a comparible or not much more price, you can dine at many of the other Dsm area privately owned steakhouses and have an overall experience much better. I’d return for a group gathering if it was someone else’s idea. I’d otherwise go elsewhere.More

I was mixed about this restaurant. The bar area has a cool rustic look with good whiskey available. The restaurant seating is really packed in. The filet was made and flavored well. The cheesy au gratin potatoes was tasteless and covered in cheap cheese. It’s...more of a truck stop then a steak house.More

The Big Steer is one of our favorite places to go. Every meal is always fantastic. Best Shrimp I have found anywhere. Recently they were closed due to a fire for quite some time. When they reopened, the prices had gone up significantly. If you...don't mind shelling out the bucks, you can't beat this place.More

We were driving back to Upstate New York from the Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch. Stayed overnight in Altoona, outside Des Moines. Hotel staff recommended The Big Steer, and they were right on. We had no reservation at 7:00 p.m. Told there would be a...30- minute wait for a table, but we were welcome to sit in the Lounge. We took seats at the bar and were warmly welcomed by bartenders Justin and Abby, who let us know that we could order dinner there as well. We did. The prime rib was extraordinary, as were the crab cakes, caesar salad and house salad. We will definitely plan to stop here again on our next cross-country drive to see kids and grandkids.More

We have for years gone to the Big Steer for special occasions, several times a year. We went last night to celebrate our anniversary, first time since they reopened. As always the food was great, our waiter was great, but at this point, we won't...be back, as the menu prices have gone up so much that the average person can't afford it. Sorry to see it.More

My husband and I ate supper here and wow we were impressed. I had grilled chicken with wine sauce and the sweet mashed potatoes both were amazing. He had steak with crab and asparagus on top looked delectable. The price is good and the service...was outstanding. A must when you are in Altoona.More

Really enjoyed it. Went there because we could walk from Comfort Inn. Great service and food. Dinners include salad and bread. Had chicken and ribs. Great! They made brandy manhattans almost as good as Wisconsin bartenders!

They do have a "side room" , just off the hallway as you come in, across from the bar area. It would easily seat 16. They don't take reservations usually, but I would call and talk to Sherry and perhaps she will "hold" the... More
