We stopped here the other day after visiting the Children's Harbor Thrift Store and were told its a really good place for lunch. There is some history about this place and lots of Hank Williams memorabilia, along with some water sports equipment on display. I...understand why these are the decorum choices, what I don't understand is they look like they have been on the walls for 50 years. There are other aspects that I found odd like the entrance being on the far side of the building facing the water & sandy beach area. Seems like it should be what one sees driving in. There is little or no directional signs pointing to the restaurant, we were not sure we were going the right way. Anyhow, we arrived, donned our masks and entered to see a hostess/cashier at a counter who seemed to know very little about the operation and the food. We were interested in the Catfish Tacos and my wife eats gluten free so she asked if the shells were corn or wheat. The hostess did not know and did not ask anyone else to find out. Heck, she could have either called in to the kitchen or gone there herself to find out, but she did not. Her demeanor was uncaring and not interested in accommodating our other questions. The menu was old & tired simple offerings and did not have any healthy items at all. Prices were kind of high for lunch. I stepped further in to the restaurant and peered in to the kitchen and cringed a bit at the clutter and lack of cleanliness I viewed. I was tempted to cancel our selection and go to Catherines at the Crossing down the road a bit. But, Nooo, I persevered and crossed my fingers. We ended up ordering the shrimp-hush puppies-french fries entree to split, and eating outside in our car right next to the sandy beach (not on the sandy beach cause there were no tables there and a sign stated 'No Food on the beach'. OK, then with the COVID limitations I would think that they could get creative and utilize the beach area for some eating as a drawing card to attract business. There were only 2 tables seated inside at 2:30. We ate in our car and I will admit the Lamb-Wesson French Fries were good, the Hush Puppies were mediocre and the shrimp grilled on wood skewers were a disappointment. They tasted old and lacked any grilled flavor whatsoever. The Shrimp, fries and hushpuppies were literaly piled in to a large locktop styrofoam (really?, styrofoam?) to-go container, with 3 shrimp cocktail sauce packets and at least 12 ketchup packets tossed on top of the food! Again, Really? Not good to place P.C.'s on top of food, especially now. Well let me tell ya, the grilled shrimp taste stayed with me for quite some time and I began to worry a little. About 3 hours later it subsided after I purchase a $4.37 bottled of Kombucha at the Dadeville Walgreens out of desperation. Our cost of lunch was $29.00 (I gave the uncaring hostess a $2.50 tip for literaly nothing in terms of service) She nor the kitchen placed to go napkins or cutlery in the bag with our shrimp dish. We had to go back in to ask for both. Amazing!! This is a popular place? I understand it is now owned by Russell Lands. Well I certainly hope they are prepared to renovate the place and update the menu across the board. My last observation, there was a table in the dining room closest to the entrance where 8 servers were seated eating thier shift meal, I guess. An odd place for employees to gather for eating and discussing the customers they served that day. Never was there anyone who remotely resembled a manager or supervisor at least walking around. I most likely will not suggest Kowaliga Restaurant and definitely will not go back to give them a second chance. Not unless it is completely revamped.More

We were two families that came to lunch in this establishment. Unbeknownst to us they did not allow dogs in the outdoor seating area like many marinas / casual restaurants do. One of the people in our party was going to wait with the dog...by the boat so the rest of the party could eat in the outdoor seating area. We let the hostess know that we would in fact like to eat outside after initially ordering to go because of the restriction but were told we were not allowed. When we reiterated that we would like to sit outside, which was empty, she again said we were not allowed. At some point she ran out of a reasonable excuse and said the restaurant was at half capacity - which it was not. As we waited for our boxed lunches to go we continued to see people be seated including in the area we wanted to eat. Our party was visiting from another state and we do not look like “locals”. We were told we could eat our boxed lunch standing up at the side of the restaurant along with our dog.More

Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is big and has indoor and outdoor seating. The view is spectacular. We enjoyed our meal. We had onion rings as an appetizer. Wow! They were the biggest onion rings I’ve ever seen! Tasty, too. We had...shrimp. It was good and the servings were plentiful. My husband had a $35 steak. I did think it was tacky that they charged for the bread which looked like Sister Schuberts. I think they charged $2.50 for 3 rolls. The shrimp was much better than the tasteless steak.More

Great service, super friendly people. In the day time, would be great views of the water. I would call it more of a sports bar but without the dark and smoky feel. The hush puppies were not good, no flavor. They grill their wings, which...gives them an interesting taste. The fried chicken sandwich was hugs and good according to my teen boy. The mac and cheese did not look appetizing but, he ate it. Probably wouldn't go back any time soon, but, it was better than fast food.More

wings, now you might think of wings first off, but make a point to try these smoked and then fried chicken wings that are so darn good. my preference is without sauce, then add whatever sauce you wish....the wings are sooo well prepared. And, I...have to add that the onion rings are fresh and yummy. Of course, the blackened catfish is excellent, and I hear the burger is really good as well. This is an honest restaurant that serves good solid and well prepared food.More

Had the best wings ever and my husband had awesome onion rings. And this place is empty. Granted 3 pm in the afternoon on a weekday. Still should be booming. Don’t miss out!

Great place on the lake. Causal and laid back, with great views of the lake. Wonderful chicken wings and great salads. Love the bar drink specials.

I have had two recent visits to Kowaliga Restaurant--both family oriented. The first visit was with a party of four; the second visit was with a party of nine. Large groups are adequately accommodated. The views are grand--from Alabama's famous Lake Martin; they are not...the ocean with waves, but next to it :) My last visit offered the surprise fish of the day, salmon which I ordered "extra blackened." It may have been the best salmon I have ever eaten. My husband has eaten the catfish on both occasions; both he and others stated, "This is the best catfish ever." The other dishes ordered were nothing special but enjoyed because all were hungry. The first visit offered "extra" on the table waiting, but the second visit was rather "routine." Certainly, it is worth the visit, if only for the view. The onion rings are grand also; but expect only the frozen fries. Having "Kowaliga" the newest wooden Indian available for pix is cool, and the location is across the road from the lovely Children's Harbor park. Prices are a bit above average for the Lake Martin area; maybe an extra dollar or two for the view. We will be returning, I'm certain, as it is the best scenic restaurant in the area for entertaining larger crowds. Outside dining is also available along with music on some evenings.More

It was alright. Nothing spectacular and kinda over priced. I had wings, My mom had the shrimp (which were too salty) and the kids had a burger and Mac n cheese. The menu was pretty basic and definitely could use some elaborating. There was also...a lot of wasted space in the dining area that could have been utilized with more tables. There was live music the night we ate which was pleasant. Our server was very friendly but the hostess had an attitude and was not welcoming. No one welcomed us when we walked in, just asked us how many and whether we wanted inside or outside. I don’t think I will return.More

Know that when you go makes a difference in wait times. Summer Saturdays at dinnertime are VERY crowded. Plan for that. And yes, they have the wooden Indian statue. Not the original that Hank Williams wrote and sang about, but as close as possible. The...food? Oh yeah! Fantastic old fashion Southern cuisine. Try the fried catfish then buttermilk pie for dessert!More
