This review is really about the inn. Unfortunately, we were not at the inn in time for dinner, but did have a lovely breakfast the next morning. The staff were warm and welcoming, even though we came in late at night. The property is beautiful....I left an article of clothing behind and they kindly mailed it to me in the States. I feel like they went above and beyond in doing this. I would highly recommend this property.More
This restaurant is in the country inn of the same name. It feels like a little piece of heaven in the heart of Slovenia. The dining room in this ancient house is warm and inviting and complete with white linens, silver and crystal. The staff...are welcoming and knowledgeable. We started with their tongue appetizer which was beautifully presented and delicious. We also had the cabbage soup. For the main course we had grilled trout. It comes from a nearby river farm and was obviously very fresh. As with all white fish it was simply prepared, moist and delicate. I had the opportunity to meet with chef Klavdij Pirih. He is a pleasant and engaging man who was happy to answer all my questions about the preparation of the trout. It was accompanied by chopped potatoes and steamed spinach. It was perfect comfort food. We also had the pork back with dumplings. For dessert we had their chocolate soufflé and hazelnut shtrukli. They were both wonderful. I can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. Eating there was a real pleasure in every way.More
Natural kitchen with local Food. The Cook knows what sie does. Very tasteful, Plates were full. Delicious Desserts.
We loved staying at Kendov Dvorec hotel and having a fabulous gourmet tasting menu meal at their restaurant. We loved the delicious courses, each accompanied by local wines. Our breakfast was also outstanding. We would highly recommend this for couples' get away.
I stayed here for a fishing trip. Everything was excellent, the whole team were friendly, professional and really welcoming. The service was attentive and never intrusive. The food was superb, every mouthful savoured and the wine choices were good with the emphasis on local produce....A different menu every day. Really first class experience. I would definitely recommend Kendov Dvorec and I pass on my thanks to the team.More
It is a long and curvy road to get to Idrija from - well from virtually anywhere - but you will be rewarded by having an opportunity to dine at a lovely restored mansion in a romantic setting. While the first reception was outstanding (the...lady manager greeted us at the entrance, explained everything about the mansion and its history, and took us to our table. The place was almost empty at the time (only a couple of tables occupied), but they didn't sit us in the old, charming, romantic part of the restaurant. Instead, we (and the other guests) were seated in the breakfast room. Adjacent to the kitchen (so we could hear all the discussions between cooks and clattering of the pots), with the breakfast buffet table sitting empty in the middle of the room, and signs with rooms' names still there from the breakfast. In a posh restaurant such as Kendov dvorec, one expects the service to be excellent. Well, ours wasn't. The two young waitresses didn't know much about the food they were serving. It is a shame when the chef works hard to revive the traditional dishes from the region, when the waitress only tells you that you got a "married polenta" (a blend of potatoes and flour), confusing even Slovenian guests. Their nervousness could be felt throughout the lunch and they spent more time talking to the cooks about what to do (we could of course hear it thanks to our sitting) than with us. Their wine knowledge was on a similar level. When we asked what is the difference between Svetlik rebula 2014 and 2016 (they have their own vineyard), we got the answer "well, the 2014 is older". Only two tasting menus (five courses; no amuse bouche) were available and we tried both. As said, plates are based on local traditional dishes and ingredients. The dish of the day was smoked lamb with marinated vegetables. Juicy pink lamb with a hint of smoke was complemented by "only" celery and potatoes; both humble vegetables were perfectly marinated and a match to the meat. Gnocchi with lamb (again) could be made with some local cheese instead of Parmesan, but they were good. The cottage cheese variation of Slovenian štruklji was a perfect example of how they should look and taste while the buckwheat one with walnuts was on a dry side. The rest was - OK. This, unfortunately, is not enough at a hefty price tag of 60 EUR per person. There should be more imagination on the plates and by far a better service to justify it and the long drive.More
We were there for wife's birthday and it was great although it waw a rainy evening and we aerent abble to eat on the garden. Place is perfect, a bit of history in this reataurant. Food is local and great and service is really on...high level. There also made a smal cake for a wifes birthday which was just a cherry on the top.More

One is first charmed by the mansion hosting the restaurant. A great Relais&Chateaux member I described in the hotel section. Parking in front is easy, could be tougher some spring-autumn Saturdays with weddings going on. Two dining halls, one intended mainly for weddings, the other...one for hotel guests. Wonderful decoration, antique items abund. A spectacular evening view of their terrace & garden through a large window. Perfect setup for an aristocratic restaurant in Paris… But this is Idrija, far away even from Ljubljana. And still, service is very good, smiling, eager to please. OK, it happens that nobody is around in the nearly full room and the team is out for a chat by the end of the evening, but we were so relaxed and enjoyed the feeling so much that we did not care at all for waiting a few extra minutes. Winelist going for Primorska region of Slovenia only (some 70 labels) with friendly markups considering the restaurant level. Two set menus only for dinner, both based entirely on local tradition and seasonal local ingredients. Go for either trout or game, both are delicious. Conservative cuisine at its very best, crowned at the end by exquisite Kenda dumpling made from dried fruits. A sound 15 on my 1-20 kitchen scale. This restaurant is one of the key purposes to visit Idrija and/or the hotel. Sleeping in the manor is the only logical step following an excellent dinner, so book both well in advance. Much cheaper dinner than anything on a similar level in Austria or Italy. Clearly, not for the backpacker or fast food fanatic. And clearly, shorts are not recommended…More

Idrija is a fascinating place. You get there by a very curvy road with one hairpinbend after another. We visited the mercury mine and the castlemuseum. And then we had the luck to relax under a chestnut tree, having drinks in the orchard, followed by...a five course menu outside with lovely wines selected by a connaisseur and then sleeping in a very cosy bedroom in an old chateau. Morningmist as extra. How perfect can a Holiday get?More

I am reviewing the property along with the restaurant. This property is in a remote area with very little services available within the small town. Due to this, I don't recommend a long stay at this property. The hotel is very charming with impeccable service....Their staff is at your beck and call. Additionally the breakfast and dinner was very good. However their bathrooms need to be updated. It was very uncomfortable to take a shower and the toilet kept causing us issues.More
