Do not miss this one. This is possibly the best Italian restaurant in Cape Town. Of course there are some defects like everywhere. The “special” asparagus is funny as a starter and deserves to be a side dish. If it should stay a starter it should at least be wrapped in Parma ham or bacon. As it is, it’s not enough and it’s expensive. On a recent occasion my mother and I decided to order two starters instead of a main as we were not too hungry. The waitress did tell us the starter soup was quite big but failed to say that she was ordering it as a main and hence the price would double. It was an innocent mistake but I believe every waiter should inform clearly guests if they are booking a starter as a mains, especially when the guests are saying they are not too hungry and “we prefer to order two starters”, in which case the customer is the one who is right. The pasta al oglio was tried twice and twice it was excellent. The pannecotta desert was amazing. The Pasta Vongole was okay. The fried calamari were good but not the best in town. (I suggest Imhoff farm or Chapman’s peak hotel). The pasta carbonara was very good. Overall the place is worth going more than once. I dined there twice with a Michelin standard chef Amr Wuerz and he agreed with me.

For over 35 years we have use Magic Roma consistently. Why? If it's authentic Italian dishes cooked well at a fair price, you want? this is the place. Tucked away in a small shopping center in Pinelands, it's undoubtedly a hidden jem! Try the Truffle Linguine, not on the menu, but you'll get it if they have Truffle. Ossi Bucco, also not always on the menu, it's excellent. Wine is fairly priced with a good selection. I have introduced many of business acquaintances and friends over the years, often to hear. Why haven't I been here before? Yes it's consistently good, try it.

Magica Roma offers authentic Italian cuisine on par with restaurants that charge nearly double their prices. I went here to celebrate with my girlfriend and the staff and cuisine were both excellent. If you’re a pasta fan, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit if you’re near the Pinelands. Perhaps the best commendation I can give for Roma was the high quantity of local Italians we heard dining with us that night.

We had not been to this restaurant for about 5yrs as the last few times we were not happy with the evenings overall. Its frequented by locals and the owners and chef dance around their tables treating them like gold and having long conversations. And not one of them approached the other tables, including mine, to say hello or are we enjoying the food. They all just walked right past. They give the attitude they dont need your businesss

This is clearly a hugely popular restaurant with locals, whether mostly Italian or not. And they are very successful. An old established restaurant with good reviews. But we won’t be going back. As ‘English tourists’ we didn’t get the handshakes, chat, and backslapping that went on at every table around us. We went early, but our waitress left much to be desired as she was clearly frustrated by our indecision. The food is good quality, but heavy old style Italian. Before Christmas we visited a long established Italian restaurant in Miami, USA. So good we went back the second night. We did make our thoughts known to staff as we left, and with due credit we were telephoned the next day by the proprietor to apologise, and invited back.

lunched with friends at Magica Roma last Thursday. MR has a great reputation which quite frankly is ill-deserved. I ordered calamari The portion was small, unexceptional in taste, and served with chips. At R235.00 for what amounted to little more than a starter portion, although the chips made it more filling, was certainly not value. My wife ordered the Veal Marsala. Two thin slices of veal were dry and overcooked. A small serving of overcooked tasteless spinach was brought the table as a seasonal vegetable. we feel we wasted money on indifferent and overpriced food. My wife called the next day but there has been no response from a clearly arrogant management. Never again.

I visited Magica Roma again after a few years and was sadly disappointed by the bland food and mediocre service. The antipasti and smoked salmon starters were ordinary and the carpaccio was unremarkable. While the main course pasta, chicken and meat dishes could be described as generously portioned, they were not particularly flavorful and the only condiment on the table that could save them was salt. None of these dishes were such that I could not have created them better myself at home. Nothing annoys me more than having the plates cleared before everyone has finished eating. One of my guests was still trying to finish the food on his plate when the waitron attempted to whip it out from under him. Furthermore, nobody looked after our wine and water glasses, which we had to refill ourselves. Granted this would be fine for a cheap and cheerful venue, but while Magica Roma may still hold some 1980s charm with the doilies under its plates, it is by no means cheap. The only saving grace was the dessert menu which had a large selection of traditional desserts. The tiramisu and ice cream with chocolate sauce were rich and velvety. In my view, this Italian has been surpassed by others such as a Tavola in Claremont and Mama Roma in Newlands as far as southern suburbs Italian dining goes.

We visited Magica Roma a few days ago and, I'm sorry to say, were disappointed. My wife ordered the baby calamari tubes as a main dish and when it arrived we thought it was a starter. The portion as a whole was very small. The rice that accompanied the calamari tasted like ordinary Tastic rice. A restaurant which has a fine dining classification (which MR doesn't have) could perhaps get away with charging a pricy R235 for this dish. I ordered the veal Marsala and the souce was nice but the veal was tough. We realize that the input costs for restaurants have been climbing steeply but is just sad to see how the value for money at MR has been declining over the years. It's perhaps better to stick to the cheaper dishes such as pizzas and pasta when visiting this restaurant.

I felt very intimidated sitting at our table, with a waitress leaning on the railing directly behind me with arms crossed. Not exactly a welcoming stance for guests. She kept coming to our table to take an order, but we kept saying we weren't ready to order, and when we were ready, she was no where to be seen. She failed to tell us that there was only one portion of the cannelloni left. My plate of pasta, was just that, a plate of pasta with a tomato sauce, no garnish, and more importantly, no Parmesan cheese was served with it. We had to ask for cheese. Upon paying, I didn't leave a tip, as I don't believe in tipping for bad service, and the owner came to say that I hadn't left a tip!!!!! Never again!!!

Suburban Italian in Cape Town which was pretty food mid week, that says something right. Excellent service and attention to detail. A few items on menu unavailable and no specials. Calamari was disappointing but the snails, salads and carpaccio were all good. We followed with three types of pasta to share, all well cooked and delicious. Washed off with wine and tiramisu. Home cooking for the right moment.

After having sampled several high end on trend Cape Town restaurants and finding ourselves underwhelmed, my friends and I decided to return to an old favourite and we were not disappointed. Delicious food selected by our genial host, served by friendly and knowledgable staff in a cosy, warm environment. There is a reason it is still going strong after so many years… we will definitely return again & again

I returned for the first time in 10 years with high expectations as I had very fond memories of the restaurant. Unfortunately it was disappointing. Both pasta dishes were very salty and when we sent one back as being basically inedible (my partner loves salt so you can imagine how salty it was!) they simply added chilli & lemon and gave it back tasting as salty as ever. What disappointed me is that they never checked whether the dish was OK now, despite half the plate being left at the end. And they of course charged for it... That is not the callous experience we were looking for. The rest of the food (first course and dessert) was OK, but having lived in Italy for several years I can attest to it being nothing out of the ordinary.

The very best food and service in Cape Town. Consistent over the years. Ezio, one of the owners, personally oversees the kitchen and very often is the chef de maison when that extra special dish is ordered. Prices very reasonable and a quality wine list at reasonable prices. They go out of their way to please. A rarity nowadays!

If you ever find yourself in the picturesque subhurb of Pinelands, pop into this magical little restaurant that transform you straight back to Roma. The sole and hake combind with their Magic Roma tomato, cream & garlic sauce was to write home about. Sorft, juicy and tender and packed with flavour. This establishment certainly delivered on point for everything. Good wine, great service, impecable styling, light ambiance and amazing food. Pleople raving about this place were all spot on.

Magica Roma is exactly what the name suggests: authentic, delicious Italian food. We simply can't get enough of this gem. Enzo’s special dishes are the best; I never look at the menu because each time, he masters a new dish that makes my taste buds dance with delight.
