An interesting old North Adelaide pub....easy parking on Saturday evening.. Table of 11 diners; booked in advance. Very busy and noisy ambience. Insufficient staffing. We had to find someone to take our orders. Menu comparative with up-market restaurants. myself and 4 other diners ,ordered Barramundi...(POA)..small serves, excessively salted, with garnish of red cabbage, chewy mushroom stalks, watercress. Price was $35.50 2 diners ordered Fillet teak...tough and chewy. Others made no comment. Side serves of chips, veges, salad etc extra charge around $12.00 Drinks I obtained at the bar also expensive 1 beer and 1 glass of "house wine" $15.00 The room we ordered for a family birthday gathering used as a shortcut by staff and diners in the busy function room accessing the bar. Not impressed and unlikely to return. All agreed "Disappointing".More

Another enjoyable evening meal with friends at the local pub. I like the way they have improved the decor and in winter have standing heaters that keep the restaurant area cosy on these cold wet nights. The menu has changed since our last visit with...some of the standard pub meals retained and the new dishes with a twist. Our group were not keen on the Portuguese Chicken as it lacked piri piri spicyness nor the salmon with the sweetness of beetroot jus. However, the fillet steak, rocket salad vegetarian bowl did not disappoint. The staff are always efficient and attentive and we continue to enjoy our night out at The British.More

Had dinner for 8 at the British Hotel. When we arrived our table had been inadvertently given to another group. Once this had been corrected, we had an enjoyable evening with tasty well-priced food, fine decor and a nice atmosphere. There was a wide choice...of food and drink, staff were friendly and professional. Well worth a visit.More

The quality of the food on this visit was up to its usual high standard. The barramundi was juicy and the blue swimmer crab spaghetti had excellent flavour and a good amount of chilli (good considering it can easily be a very under-flavoured dish) but...the ‘experience’ this time knocked the shine off the food a little. Yes, it is a pub, but the service aspects at The British should still strive to equal the high quality of the food. The table felt extremely sticky, the wine was opened at the table but then just poured straight into glasses without the offer of a taste first, and the most irritating thing was that one main course arrived at least five minutes before the other dish appeared. If there was a timing issue, that first dish should have stayed in the kitchen, where it would have retained some heat, until the other dish was ready. This isn’t such an issue when you are part of a large group as you do understand there might be a few little blips involved in getting all dishes to the table at the same time, but when there are only two people on a table, there is no excuse for such a lag between putting both plates down in front of the customers…..and then the ‘apology’ was delivered without an ounce of sincerity! There also seemed to be some ‘angst’ going on between the wait staff and the kitchen staff/chef that spilled over a little too obviously into the restaurant. Weird. We will return because this pub does deliver well on its ‘pub food’ and it is always just a nice notch up from what you can expect in pubs generally, but hopefully we’ll have a better ‘experience’ next time.More

This Hotel is full of character set in the local neighbourhood in North Adelaide. Meals at this hotel cater for all. Typical pub meals are available, as are beautifully presented ‘restaurant quality’ ones. We’d recommend.

We didn’t go into the front bar but we looked in and around the place and just generally enjoyed that nostalgic feel of being in a more English style of pub with various nooks and crannies. The courtyard has an almost colonial/Singaporean feel about it...- balmy air circulated by fans whilst you enjoy heartily grilled food and sip from your wine glasses sweating (in a good way!) in the warmth. Our steaks were cooked perfectly medium rare, great flavour with a nice char - but no béarnaise sauce.... now there is the one area for improvement I think! At $40 in a pub environment we felt the cut of meat we received was oh so slightly overpriced, but no big deal. Maybe with Béarnaise it’d be exactly worth $40 then :) The rocket, apple and walnut salad was sooooooo good. Simple, but fresh and just sooooooo good (I think I said that?). Look forward to returning soon.More

Historic pub in lovely North Adelaide location. Rear dining room looks a bit tired. Prices a little on the high side for pub food but they do accept Entertainment Card discount. Service was friendly but erratic. Reasonably priced wine list. Beef and mushroom pie was...tasty. Steak sandwich okMore

Another great meal enjoyed at The British in the cosy courtyard. The meals are large servings and well priced. I have noticed a big improvement in the quality and taste of meals with the current chef which has brought me back to my local. The...service is also good.More

Not a great first experience here by any measure. My wife’s fish and chips were as you would expect (but as she said, “you can’t exactly screw up fish and chips”). My steak was certainly sub-par. I ordered medium rare but it was cooked medium...well (see photos), and the quality of the meat itself wasn’t great. I ordered a Diane sauce and, while I know there are many variations, this version was nothing like anything I had seen or tasted. The waitress happily took it back for an alternative. When she did she got a plateful of unwarranted abuse from the kitchen - and we heard every word. The whole ordeal was quite off putting. A great wine list and nice atmosphere let down by an average and arrogant kitchen.More

We were invited to The British for dinner on a Friday evening recently and sat at a table for 4. I was pleasantly surprised to see there had been some upgrades to the dining area at the back and it was much more welcoming compared...to my experience a few years ago. The new heatwrs also kept the area warm and cosy. My biggest surprise was the quality and presentation of the food. I am assuming there are different people running the kitchen. I ordered the chicken fillet with wild mushrooms. WOW! The flavour was memerable and totally unexpected. I rarely say that about food. I thought I'd be eating a rather bland, standard pub meal however, this was what I'd expect to get in a 5 star restaurant. Others at the table had the beef pie, gnocchi with wild mushrooms & steak. We shared a superb green salad sprinkled with roasted hazelnuts. Again a salad that was above the norm. I will definitely be going back again just for the chicken dish. The service and overall atmosphere was good so very happy to recommend The British.More
