Cozy gem with delicious food

A search for a restaurant with vegan options to cater for the vegan in the family returned The Avenue in Claremont as an option. The waiter was friendly, the atmosphere cozy on a not so warm evening, and all our meals delicious. The hake and calamari which two of us ordered was tender and well cooked, the tuna was done to perfection and the Beyond Burger went down a treat. All of us too full for dessert went home satisfied and sure to remember this restaurant for our next trip to Cape Town.

Cosy gem nestled in the Avenues is well worth a visit!

Great side avenue diner for good quality steak @ restaurants, Halal steaks are usually sliced to bread-slice thickness and grilled to within an inch of leather. NOT HERE! Tony has thumbed his nose @ convention and offers high quality, tender, flavourful cuts, cooked to perfection! Priska manages front-of-house with charm and aplomb. Quality is relatively consistent and the atmosphere, welcoming.

Good neighbourhood restaurant

We enjoyed a pleasant early evening dinner here. My partner loved his steak and the Lindt brownie dessert was sinful. Good veggie and vegan options. Nothing fancy about the location….just a friendly neighbourhood restaurant.

Good but not great

Location Ambience Located on a lovely street, 2nd Avenue in Harfield. The stoop is covered in - no outdoor dining option. You had to walk through the kitchen to get to the toilets. This is not ideal. Food The Hollumi starter was the stand out dish. The steak was good. The salmon was good, it was served medium which might not suit everyone. It was lucky my MIL has poor eyesight & did not notice. Wine Very good wine list. The layout was confusing. Wines were listed mostly by winery but then sometimes they were listed by colour. It was fairly priced. We were a group of 3. We ordered grilled salmon by 2 & a steak as mains + a grilled hollumi starter. Service Our waiter was very careful when taking our order. I suspect he was new to the restaurant. The service was far too quick. He served our mains 60 seconds after clearing our shared starter. We had barely finished the starter. I see dinner as an event, not something that needs to be completed in under an hour. The restaurant was not particularly busy at the time. We ordered 1 dessert for my MIL to end the meal. Overall Food good but not great. Excellent Hollumi starter. Service too fast.

Lovely surprise

We stumbled on The Avenue Restaurant by chance, and what a lovely experience. The Burgers were tasty and the cheese cake and brownie were the best we have ever tasted. Our waiter was fantastic. And the chefs came to check up on us during our meal.

Good dinner, good vibe

Had 2 dinners here while staying in Claremont for a few days. Very busy both nights, clearly a favorite spot for locals and out-of-towners alike. The service was good but on one night (Saturday) a little slow, probably a function of the crowd size. The food was very good (Chicken Schnitzel one night and Kingklip fish the other). Hearty portions and the price seemed reasonable. Good vibe and ambiance. Recommend it for a nice dinner.

Great steak and sides

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the meat! The wide range of sides on offer was great! The chips and the onion rings were our favourites. A bit disappointed with the sauces though - too runny.

Great food at unassuming restaurant

We had excellent food at this restaurant I had a very good seafood platter at a reasonable price. Myvegan wife the vegan kebabs and sweet potato and butternut soup which she said was excellent. Service was good throughout

Good food but then the service died

I appreciated the information provided on what is a varied and not overpriced wine list. My wife had the fresh kabeljou linefish and I had a sirlion steak, medium rare, both well cooked and tasty. Of particular mention were the grilled veggies which included beetroot, perfect texture, lovely flavour. Unfortunately, once our plates were cleared, the service died. We finished our wine, sat a while longer and eventually had to get up to pay our bill, having not been offered desserts or coffees.
