Very disappointing after hearing good things are this place. We went for a breakfast, we decided on having some scones. The scones were stated as having cream and cheese. When they were served we were informed that there was no cream, how that is possible...we have no idea, there are about 4 shops close by that could sell them cream. We should have been informed of this before as we would not have ordered them. The cheese, was not real cheese. It was processed cheese. The one scone looked like it has the onset of mould and was sent back. We sent everything back and left and went somewhere else. We will not be back.More

So bad. Waited an hour for breakfast which was almost inedible. Had the falafel breakfast. Falafel balls were rock hard and tasted like cardboard. Came with freezing cold chopped raw onion and tomato (not salsa) and ice cold tzatziki. Yuck! Service very lackadaisical Poor

Their service is bad, the waitresses are not friendly and they take time to give you your food, it was my second time and they did the same thing, I thought maybe i got the waitress in a bad mood but i see it an...everyday thing....i wouldn't recommend it, never going back there againMore

A lovely place for a nice hot Cappuccino and Carrot Cake on a rainy, cold day.. Attentive and friendly staff - definitely will be back to try their pizzas.

LoadShedding breakfast. Power off 8-10am. The staff knew about this so it was not unexpected. So no back up electricity but we were told they had gas and could serve breakfast but no toast. We ordered the basic breakfast. Staff were lacking energy - surely...you should be motivated and friendly when there are not many customers? Breakfast arrived on cold plates - pour some hot water in plates and dry before placing eggs on it. Pale eggs, bacon and tomato fine. We were offered bread but could not toast. The bread arrived cold - probably thawing. Tea was 1 bag in a pot for R22. We had ordered 2 cups…. R44 for 2cups of weak tea!!! Suggestion: you know when there is to LoadShedding ( usually) - prepare 2/3 breakfasts and do them properly- make a plan! In these difficult times you want to attract and keep customers not put them offMore

We found this place a tranquil haven from hectic shopping. Service was quick and pleasant and the menu is reasonably priced. I found my wrap really nothing special lacking decent flavoring or creativity, but the chips were just perfect, while the calamari salad was top...notch.More

The food was good. Service was slow. We were only 2 tables at the time. One waitress. Food took long. Waitress overcharged me R100. She refunded me on the spot with a R100 note. Wonder how many customers she tried and succeeded to ripp off...like that. Please ensure you look at the bill and the bank slip.More

I last visited 3 years ago and didn’t enjoy my experience and decided to give the cafe another go and was pleasantly surprised. I think the Waitering staff still need a little training - they should introduce themselves at least, but all in all a...good breakfast and the renovations have improved the look. Will return.More

The Waitrons are Great! Unfortunately the food is not good! I had chicken schnitzel, but it actually was whole chicken breasts ( not flattened ) covered in a weird tasteless batter. My wife had a fillet steak, but totally dry and tiny in size. and...calamari, again covered in a batter not meant for calamari. When our waitress took our complaints to the owners sitting at a table just a few yards from us, they never even acknowledged us or our complaint. Didn’t bother to even look up! Don’t waste your money eating thereMore

Now I don't pretend for a moment to be a coffee expert, let alone a cappucino fundi...but I do know what I like. So many places with their often indifferent baristas plonk down a bland, overpriced latte, cappuccino or whatever only to discover that what...one has received is an overpriced mug of froth. My worst experience was from a Starbucks in New Mexico - an overpriced takeaway cup with nothing but a smidgen of espresso plus froth! Essence Cafe is different - especially if you have the good fortune to meet Sandile, on duty as the barista. The perfect host, he knows his coffee, loves his craft and is happy to chat about what goes to make the perfect cappuccino or whatever your coffee inclination is. So....I wasn't expecting anything much, but what I got was a great cappuccino and a wonderful experience in a great location - next time I will have a meal there as well to complete the experience!More
