Friendly staff. Nice view of the sea and Isle of Wight (on a clear day). Walking distance from where we stayed. We had dinner there with friends, were well looked after and not hassled. Food was good and tasty. Nice selection of dishes, reasonably priced....If we’d been staying in the town longer we would have returned there for more.More

Another excellent lunch in superb surroundings, and served by a courteous and professional team of young people. A glass of fizz on the house to start with, and a lovely “Happy Birthday” addition to the dessert. Classy! Fillet steaks were the best we’ve ever tasted.

I can't really fault the quality of the food. Tasty and hot. But...... Drinks came out incorrectly - had to ask for that to be corrected. One of the glasses was dirty; had something stuck to the inside of it. This shouldn't happen. Food came...out, with a side order missing ..... questioned it and 25 minutes later, a half-hearted grunt of an apology from the staff (clearly seeing we'd already finished everything else), and that was that. Very much a 'take it or leave it' attitude. Bit of a shame really - it wasn't that busy (not that it would be an excuse), but the staff need to listen and pay more attention. Good food, no doubt, but overall a let down.More

I have visited the Cliffe House Hotel on many occasions over the past few years, I don’t live in this area but when visiting my mum it is a place we both like to go for lunch. I booked our table for Sunday lunch, 3...days before, and we were both looking forward to our visit. Trying to park was the first nightmare, negotiating cars that had just been dumped hap hazardly in an obvious panic of missing their lunch!! My mother had gone in first whilst I attempted to park, she discovered that they had no record of our booking!! They tried to blame this on some poor girl who didn’t speak English very well, so my question is why was she taking bookings on the phone? Anyway, that’s irrelevent as I did the booking, and it was a man I spoke to who spoke perfect English!! My mother was shown to a table for two. The waiter and waitresses were very attentive and helpful. Then a party of 5 were shown to the table next to ours, they had a very sweet dog with them, which was obviously very young. From then onwards it was like sitting in the middle of Crufts!! Dogs barking, people walking to and fro to take their dog outside, it was very distracting and not at all what we had hoped for. Now both my mum and I love dogs, I lost my chocolate lab a couple of years ago and it left a gaping hole in my life. However, we did not take him out for lunch, unless we could sit outside. We didn’t want the hassle of moving tables as by now our meals had arrived. Upon paying, my mother explained why she was unhappy and was told it was a dog friendly hotel and that we were sat in the dog friendly area!! So, because someone didn’t take my booking and they were busy, we were sat in the dog friendly area but hadn’t been told or asked if we minded. The manager we spoke to didn’t apologise, so maybe “dog friendly”comes before “people friendly” My mother is 93 years old she likes to return to places that she feels are welcoming and familiar, she was very disappointed, as was I, with his response. Unfortunately, there won’t be a next time, as there is no way my mum or I would wish to return. Such a shame!!More

Lovely restaurant. Managed to seat us despite not booking. Amazing views and lovely, friendly staff. Both our steaks were cooked perfectly and both puddings were amazing too.

Ordered a burger and fries from their outside BBQ area. The burger was an overcooked (crispy blackened on one side otherwise known as burnt) dry patty served on a dry bun, with a 10mm thick raw tomato slice and a sliver of raw onion. Served...in a container not much bigger than the burger. No sauce on the burger whatsoever. Surprise. No ketchup or sauce of any description, other than mayonnaise. The reason, sorry it's a bank holiday weekend. Either fire the buyer or mention it on the menu. Service was good, very pleasant staff but we will not visit again. Second rate fare.More

We visited at the end of May and stayed here for two nights. Not knowing the venue, it was surprising on a Thursday night to see the restaurant so busy and near capacity (definitely a good sign that made us want to eat there) but...James found the time to check us in and show us to our room, and you could tell straight away this was a place that prides itself on service. The room was nice with a lovely sea view, the bed was quite hard but we flipped the mattress which solved the issue, everything else was fine with the room. James somehow managed to squeeze us in for dinner service and the food was absolutely fantastic. You can tell the locals all come here and for good reason. I don’t normally eat in the same place twice in a row when I go away, but it was a no brainer to ask James the following night, when they were also full, to squeeze us in again (he did with only a 10 minute wait in the garden bar). We had breakfast included both days of our stay and again the food was top quality. The service all round was absolutely outstanding, all staff are so attentive, on the ball, and welcoming, going the extra mile to take care of their customers. The managers all spoke to us, took an interest in what we were doing for the day, and made us feel welcome. Really can’t recommend this place enough. They’ve got a good thing going here and it’s well worth a visit.More

Biased, as is my local, and what a local! Perched on the clifftop at Barton, with one of the best pub gardens in the country, with its views across to the Isle of Wight, you can enjoy a great range of food and drinks, from...a bbq, to great pub grub with great beers and local gin etc. Service is friendly, fun and caring. Top notch!More
