where to start - the drinks took 20 minutes to arrive,. they are charging £16-£20 for a main meal - unless you are having burger and chips or fish and chips the portions are tiny and nothing to write home about... the main meals took...at least half an hour to arrive. I had an indonesian curry and it was so small it was more like a starter. The pudding took 45 miutes (!!) to arrive, and my crumble was luke warm. My wife was handed a very hot plate by a very unthinking waitress and it was hot enough to burn her hand... ignore the great reviews before may 2021. i dont know whether it has changed hands, changed chef or management, but for what you are paying it was a disaster in every way!More

We walked in on a late Friday night, after calling to check whether we need a reservation on a short notice. Very friendly staff, lovely ambience inside the restaurant, quiet, although it was quite booked out. The food was great!

We were group of 6 with two celebrations in the party, service was terrible waited 20 mins for our drink, 40 mins for our food and 45 mins for our desserts! I had cheese n mac with crab and crayfish, it was bland and about...4 bits of tiny fish bits in it, my husband had a indenysian fish curry, the portion was so small it was a strip of the food in themiddle of the plate. We did complain about food and portion size. We waited another 45 mins for our pudding, 4 of us had crumble, which was basically cold, one had cheesecake which was a round thing in the middle og the dish. I ordered brownie and as the waitress passed me the plate, it was really hot and she didn't tell me so I burnt my hand. So the outcome is terrible food, small portions, overpriced and bad service. Never again.More

This is now the third pub of the chain that I have been to and we have had terrible service along with dreadful food. I've had better food and service in weather spoons than at their pubs

I went today for what was supposed to be a pleasant birthday lunch but had a horrible meal. My mother had the hake with crushed potatoes which were inedible. The hake was overcooked and tasteless. I had the chicken dish with fondant potatoes and carrots....Again overcooked and inedible- really didn’t taste freshly cooked or a bad chef. We did complain but didn’t make too much of a fuss and paid the bill. Extremely expensive for a bad meal. Came home and had to make myself another lunch as had hardly touched the food in the pub. Will never return and do not recommend.More

The Royal Oak is a short distance from Shorefield Country Park where we have a holiday home so we were delighted to find such and excellent pub on our “doorstep” Our first visit was in September last year, we managed another one in November and...then COVID took over. We had even booked and paid for our Christmas lunch there. We were not able to visit again until after the lockdown regulations were lifted in May; we accepted a credit for our aborted Christmas lunch and were very pleased that the management were on the ball and our credit was available. Now to the important bit. We enjoyed the food and found the table service excellent last Autumn, it was the same high standard in May 2021. The menus are restricted but that is not surprising for an establishment which prides itself on fresh, good quality and freshly prepared food. We had a lovely lunch and excellent table service. The pub garden is not open yet but it would be churlish to complain considering what the hospitality industry is having to cope with at present. This is a really great pub. If you are in the area give it a try.More

Lovely little find, perfect food in a great cosy atmosphere, I had the Hake and my Husband the Downton Burger, both thoroughly enjoyable. Great that it was walking distance from our holiday apartment - Petite La Mer just down the road. I would recommend this...to anyone who stays at this great little find also.More

Used to use this pub regularly before lockdown but arrived for a birthday meal- really sad to see that you can’t have a drink in the garden ( especially as weather so good) . Building looks sad and neglected. Sat down for meal and many...items on menu not available. Service lacking as short staffed. Steaks rubbish and expensive. Thankfully we had good company. We paid bill but a member of our party had been in to prepay money against the account- when bill paid we asked if prepaid money taken off account we we’re told it had but on further enquiries found that it hadn’t. Had we taken the word of first member of staff would have had a bigger bill ( and prices are not cheap anyway). As a local we won’t go back again, lacking atmosphere and feeling of lack of interest by owners.More

Last minute booking for the Bank Holiday weekend. Great food, attentive service and a relaxing atmosphere. We were staying in the area and my parents travelled down to join us for lunch as they are in our bubble. Good covid safety in place. Well presented...and tasty meals, nice selection. I had the vegetarian burger and it was delicious. The crumble went down well with my son and Dad! I would visit again.More
