I don't usually eat at the hotel I'm staying at but on this occasion, I'm so glad I did. Food, service, decor, view - all fantastic!

Another disappointing experience in that for the second time I had to get the total bill changed! My wife and I really enjoy the excellent food in the 1912 restaurant so booked a table for 2 for 7 pm 17th March. We pointed out their special offer 2 courses for £26. I had the Pork belly starter and a Seafood Lingini (both dishes were wonderful) and my wife just a main course: chicken supreme. We both enjoyed the wine: Pinot Grigio for my wife and large glass of Montepluciano. Asking for the bill they had once again overcharged (last time was about a month ago) as the Lingini was added to the final bill! I also noted later that the 10% service charge was still £7.27 which was the same as the 1st bill - it should have been £5.20. Oh dear why advertise a special offer and not stick to it? We had a pretty miserable waitress and I do not like being overcharged especially on a second occasion.

Many thanks for your valuable feedback and I am delighted that yet again you enjoyed excellent food. All bills are presented to diners to ensure any mistakes can be rectified, therefore ensuring we are not overcharging. Unfortunately, errors do occasionally occur and I understand the bill was corrected as soon as this was brought to our attention. Reading through feedback on both this page and the hotel review page, what stands out is how friendly, courteous and efficient the team at The Lansdowne are, I am therefore surprised by your comments but will speak with my restaurant team regarding this.

Myself and family stayed at The Landsdowne at the end of September. We were a large party and so we were seated in the side room of the restaurant, which was fabulous as it felt like a private dining experience. Having eaten here before several times I knew the menu and was tempted to order my usual sea bass risotto! Which I knew was delicious. Last minute I ordered the lamb and I’m so glad I did as it was possibly one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. I’m a bit of a foodie and so my standards are quite high but I can safely say it was amazing. Cooked perfectly and a real melt in the mouth moment! The wait time was approximately 20 minutes which for us was ideal as some had starters and some wanted to enjoy a glass of wine and a chat first. The service is always a delight as it feels very professional and the staff are clearly proud to be working there. Which is a rarity these days! I’ve since learnt there’s a new menu so we have all booked again for a weekend at the end of November. We look forward to enjoying the 1920’s vibe and elegance of this establishment. Feels like a 5 star experience. Highly recommend.

First of all, I will admit to being out of my financial comfort zone in this hotel. I was astonished at the cost of pretty much everything, from snacks to drinks. Only a few items on the restaurant menu were of interest to me and I plumped for the “homemade burger”. It was served with mediocre fries, onion rings and a poor salad. And it was ok. But just ok! And for over £20 (£18.50 plus 10% service charge), I was hoping for better! Why do some restaurants have a service charge? It's a restaurant; food is to be served to the customer, so why are you charging more to serve it? Anyway, I rest my case. I was far from satisfied and won’t be returning!

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry that you did not enjoy your recent visit to The Lansdowne. Our prices are reviewed regularly and compared to local establishments of a similar standard, we are always the best value. The burger is handmade and not a frozen product like you would find in cheaper venues. Like every household in the country, we have been affected by the cost of living crisis and can not absorb constant price increases. I should make it clear that the burger cost is £18.50 and the service charge is optional. This is not a charge to serve the food, it is an optional charge if you feel you have received good service and is shared with all team members.

We have always raved about the food and service in this restaurant so as a treat we booked a table for 2 on 9th February for 7.00 pm. We were given table 3 and were asked very quickly for our drinks order: for myself a large glass of Rioja and for my wife a large glass of Pinot Grigio plus tap water. We then chose 2 courses (set price before 8.45 pm of £26) both of us going for the Salmon as our main course. The food was excellent as always. The service was also excellent and attentive. After another round of drinks I asked for the bill and mentally calculated it to be about £90. I was shocked to see £116 as they had counted the two starters as extras - No it is in the 2 course deal. This is the second time it has happened and we will not be coming here for a long time. Prices have definitely gone up. Final bill was under £94.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review of your recent experience at 1912 Restaurant. We sincerely apologise for the disappointment you encountered, especially as you have previously enjoyed both the food and service. We are very concerned to hear that you were misinformed about the set menu pricing and charged incorrectly for your starters. This should not have happened, and we are truly sorry for the confusion and frustration it caused. We understand that this significantly impacted your perception of the value proposition and overall experience. We appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention. We take all feedback seriously and use it to improve our service and communication. Rest assured, we are investigating this matter thoroughly to ensure it does not happen again. We will also ensure that our staff is well-trained and clearly communicates the specifics of any set menus to avoid future misunderstandings. We are delighted to hear that you found the food and service themselves to be excellent as always. We strive to maintain high standards in both areas, and your positive feedback validates that effort.

Solo dinner on a Sunday evening. Unexpected and unpretentious, but better than I expected. I was injured and tired after walking the South Downs Way, so I ate at The Lansdowne restaurant, 1912 Seafood &Steak, where I already was staying. I ordered a vegetarian miso aubergine and quinoa. Incredibly tasty; even though I suggested to the chef to cook it with less miso sauce in future. It was already a perfect dish without the need of adding extra salt or sauce. For dessert, and to refresh the palate, I had strawberry, honeycomb and ginger ice cream. 10/10 for the ginger ice cream- I would return to repeat this! Overall it was quite good, and the waiter/ waitresses were always attentive and courteous. Quiet (as a Sunday evening) but cozy, surrounded by the beautiful art deco atmosphere. Very good value for the money.

I visited the 1912 restaurant at the Lansdowne for the first time this week, having heard wonderful things from others. Having enjoyed a lovely walk along the seafront prior, the Lansdowne was an incredibly welcoming and warm spot for some lunch with friends and family. The staff were friendly and attentive throughout and we were served a delicious selection of dishes to enjoy. All staff were knowledgeable, courteous and attentive, making our Christmas get together a really pleasurable experience. I am thoroughly looking forward to visiting The Lansdowne again soon and can highly recommend.

Lovely location, beautifully refurbished, friendly staff. I had steak. My husband had a halloumi salad. Shared a bottle of white. All food was good. The menu was quite wintery and while I was happy with the steak from the main menu, my husband ordered off the bar menu to find something he wanted. Wine was excellent. Price was acceptable for the location, quality of food and decor. Will definitely try again!

While staying in Eastbourne we had dinner in the 1912 Restaurant in the Lansdowne Hotel. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and the service was very good too. We both had the clam chowder to start, then I had the lamb shank, my husband had the salmon, and for dessert I had a very tasty sticky toffee pudding, and my husband had the cheese board. I can highly recommend eating at the 1912 Restaurant in Eastbourne.

I stay at the Lansdowne every time I come to England and it gets better every time without losing any of its charm, the result of being an entirely privately-owmed establishment. Many of the staff have been with the hotel for many years and are so welcoming to guests. As to the 1912 Restaurant (the year of the hotel's establishment in the same family),: it is truly excellent with its ew menu. The dishes are freshly homemade and prepared. The new Pie of the Day must be tasted, as well as the seafood. Do try the Catch of the Day and also the Octopus. Delicious. Homemade soup and puddings and a wine list carefully selected by the proprietors. In the bar, be served single malt or whatever you wish and very competitive prices. The bar staff are professional and helpful. Why not stay in the hotel?

We are local to Eastbourne but stayed overnight at The Lansdowne due to two events on the same day which finished late. The hotel had such lively atmosphere whilst also being quiet and comfortable. Our room had a beautiful sea view which was lovely on a stormy morning. The next morning I was looking after my friends daughter and the hotel staff was so helpful in accommodating her as an extra guest for breakfast. The breakfast itself was amazing value for money - so much choice and cooked to perfection. I have had many continental and cooked breakfasts over my time and this was certainly top with clearly superior ingredients being used. I would certainly stay again and my husband and I are looking forward to visiting 1912 for dinner soon.

We haven’t written a review for a good while but, long story short, we’re used to eating and staying in the UK’s finest restaurants and hotels: Le Manoir, Lympstone Manor, Grantley Hall, Moor Hall etc. so we know what’s good and what isn’t and 1912 definitely deserves to be included in the ‘thumbs up’ section as it’s situated in our hometown and does a damn fine job. Eastbourne has been crying out for a true fine dining restaurant for…well, forever! 1912 is a breath of fresh air for our town, not only because the chefs show skills and the food excels, but also because the restaurant has been beautifully transformed and is unlike any other eating establishment in the vicinity. For those looking at the pics on their website…they don’t do it justice. The restaurant is somewhat three vast rooms all in matching calming, contemporary decor, with tables spaced sensibly allowing for an intimate occasion whether you be a table of two or twelve. The menu is neither pretentious or simple, with options to suit most diners, but the most surprising thing is how well priced it is. If this restaurant in Eastbourne can offer cuisine of this standard at such wallet-friendly prices, then why can’t others? This is value for money all over. Service was great. Informal, friendly, jovial and down to earth. Professional yet unstuffy. Food….just excellent. From starters to dessert, it is all presented beautifully (as seen in the photos) and it tastes as good as it looks. Wine list is good too. Not massive, but something for everyone and, again, sensibly priced. This really is the restaurant to beat now in Eastbourne. I am so glad they’ve brought this to our town. I want to tell everyone about it because this is what Eastbourne has been crying out for, but I also want to keep it a secret. Good job the place is big enough to cater for its new customers! I wish 1912 all the success it deserves. Definitely massive respect to the kitchen team and wonderful serving team that have created this. 5 stars from us, and thank you for a stunning lunch! 👍🏻

Rose and Stevie elevate this place from ordinary to excellent. We only went for sandwiches and coffee but Stevie took the trouble to show us the bar and the available lounges for our meal. Rose is a diamond. Sandwiches were great value, came with salad and crisps(I had tuna melt,my husband BLT) The black cat cafe will not be visited again(The meads)as compared to Lansdowne is not good on value and incredibly cramped. Big up The Lansdowne...looking forward to new carvery ,starting on 28th. In 1912. Thoroughly recommend.

Emma and her colleagues were there for us from the moment we entered the restaurant. We arrived early for a pre-theatre meal. Emma had a gentle smile on her face throughout and she was very professional. Drinks were organised, menu choices made and conveyed to the kitchen without any fuss, The food arrived quickly and we were impressed with the quality and quantity. Salmon and tuna dishes were cooked to perfection and served with plenty of vegetables. Maybe my tuna dish had just a little too much salt spinkled across the full plate, but all chefs seem to do that to make sure we get all the falvours. I enjoyed a glass of the Picpoul de Pinet with the Tuna and the minerality of the wine worked perfectly with the fish. The desserts continued to impress us. The spiced ginger sponge was generous, light and soft, and full of flavour again. We only visit Eastbourne occasionally and have never eaten at the 1912 before but will make sure we stop over there on out next visit. Thank you Emma and all you colleagues who helped make it a memorable meal.
