The arctic char was the best fish we'd had in our entire trip to the island. Fatty and flaky, seasoned and cooked just right. Skin was crispy and the flavour of the fish was preserved exceptionally well. The goose and wild game meatballs were somewhat...More

Ostabudin is a GEM in Reykjavik. Our waiter was friendly and the food didn’t feel as overpriced as other places in the city. Between the two of us we had the beet salad, salted cod, apple crumble, smoked salmon, char, and chocolate cake. We both...More

It might look like a cafe but that is so far from the truth. Lovely food, reasonably priced (for iceland) and good service. Recomended.

Found this great place by accident really, looking for somewhere for a light lunch. Ended up having a course more than we planned. Food was great. Staff were friendly and helped explain about some of the local produce. Would definitely go back.

The seafood soup was the best I had whilst in Iceland. The service was great, the restaurant was warm and cosy and the lunch deal was very reasonably priced. Great find, would highly recommend.

We went there for an evening meal to celebrate our ruby wedding. I use the title "hidden gem because in all honesty from the outside it doesn't look anything special. Quite small, although there is additional space downstairs, but friendly and unpretentious and that suits...More

Lovely and pleasant staff. The food was delicious and given the prices in Iceland pretty reasonable.

Gorgeous food, well presented and served by friendly, very pleasant staff. Relaxed atmosphere which was very enjoyable. We went twice which speaks volumes as we usually like to explore.

I wanted to try some less usual dishes without going to the extreme of the rotted shark so I chose the Minke Whale steak starter and Arctic Char main and they did not disappoint, the Char in particular was excellent: crispy skin and beautifully soft...More

This was a lovely cosy place to eat. We had wine and the waiter brought water and some bread and butter, which was delicious - the bread had a salty crust. I had the Arctic Char which was served with beautifully smooth, piped mashed potato...More

We were only given the limited lunch menu when we arrived during lunch time. I believe there might have been 4 things on the menu including two soups and the fish of the day.

Description
Food connoisseurs and other gastronomes have ever since the year 2000 slipped into our basement during lunch hour to feast on various delicacies. But of course everyone knows that because ever since the restaurant opened for business it has been the least kept secret in the area. Ostabuðin has truly been an oasis on Skolavorðustigur because we have tried our best to offer a wide varaity of fresh and curious products which have tickled our patrons taste buds and in turn trickled salivating reflexes in the city center. Even though we have taken some pride in the queue that has formed outside our entrance every single day during lunch break for the past 15 years we have finally expanded our premises. Thus we can now welcome our patrons from dawn til dusk and offer them a variety of fish and meat dishes which we have refined with passion. Of course there is also a lot of cheese on the menu and now we can also serve wine with our fare. Our daily specials always include both a fish dish and a soup during lunch hour on weekdays. Do not hesitate to ask what is on offer today. Also, our seafood soup never disappoints. Our guests might have to share tables during the lunch hour rush but who knows – maybe you will make new friends. Bon appetit, Joi.
