An exceptional family run restaurant. Food is amazing, all home made including desserts, and the wood fired pizzas delicious. Great friendly atmosphere & their Fado shows held every other week, performed by renowned Algarvian musicians & singers playing during your meal is exceptional. (Booking essential for show nights) Cannot recommend highly enough

So good, we ate twice here. Came across this restaurant (traditional Portuguese) whilst exploring the area. It was super busy, 8pm but we were lucky to get a table inside for 2. Lots of locals with a mixture of tourists. Food was sensational. First meal we had codfish and I had a steak with peppercorn sauce. Perfectly cooked both meals. Desert consisted of the owners own home made cake - incredible. On our second visit we started with a pizza bread cheese and fresh sliced local meat/ham, warm board, next my wife has an octopus salad which she said was to die for and I had a wood fired pizza which was as good as any I’ve had during my 10 week trip. Highly recommended- service is awesome as well and it’s family owned and run. Probably up there with the best place we have eaten in the 10 countries we’ve visited on this trip. Superb!

A decent enough meal if a bit rushed and pricey. We had a steak and a fish dish with a shared starter and dessert and a bottle of wine.
Steak was well cooked and the sauce was made for mopping up.
Quite busy so best to book and quite noisy

Food is nice but nothing exceptional. The owner (the lady) is very friendly. The rest of the waiters were however not attentive and borderline rude. In particular the old small guy from which we tried to order desert. No single waiter ever said something like enjoy your meal after serving, they just put the food on the table and walked away without saying anything.

A family of five (3 teens) ate here to provide a variety of choices. Most had the pizza which was quite a large serving. The other item ordered was the fish stew. Both the pizza and the stew were deemed to be under seasoned. Other dishes around the restaurant looked good with a wide variety of choices available. Prices are reasonable. Would recommend booking ahead as it's a busy place. The staff and owner are very attentive to their patrons. It's good but I would likely try something else before going back.

I would highly recommend this restaurant for its delicious food. My fillet steak was out of this world, and everyone else really enjoyed their food too. The staff were attentive and made the children feel very welcome. We will definitely go back for more.

Staff are rude, service is terrible, tables are prioritized for locals in the quo blatantly. When we eventually got a table after 45 minutes they brought us our wine then came back after 20 minutes and said they couldn’t make pizzas as a new table of 12 that arrived after us had ordered them!!!
Nothing else was open in the city so we didn’t eat
Don’t go here as a tourist!

We went for an early supper and were so pleased that we returned a week later before the end of our holiday. Both times we shared an appetizer, a main dish and a bottle of wine and we came away very satisfied. The 2 best meals that we had during our stay in Lagos. Highly recommended the seafood stew with toasted bread and anything that comes out of their pizza oven.

Waited 40 minutes to get seated. Ordered pizza and after finishing a bottle of wine the waitress came to the table to say they could not serve pizza as a big table came in and ordered “lots of marinaras”.
Could only ask from the local cousins kitchen, however not half the menu was available.
Sad.

Wow such an amazing experience at Calhou! The staff is so welcoming and we got lucky because we went early before all the reservations came in. We were seated promptly at 6:00pm and our expectations were exceeded. My husband who is Portuguese and raised on traditional food thought it was amazing. My son and husband had the two person fish medley dish. My daughter and I had the steak dishes and all was so so good. We ordered the white pizza with olives which also was amazing. Make reservations if you truly want to experience something wonderful.

We had a wonderful lunch at this restaurant. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy and warm. Exposed beams and brick give it a rustic feel. Our group had the steak with the egg on top, pork Alentejana style and the fish and prawn cataplana. The standout dish was the pork Alentejana. It was a gigantic portion served in a 1.5 L pot. The pork was tender and beautifully seasoned, with an abundance of clams. The cataplana was also wonderful, with a portion size more than enough for two. All in all, a fantastic meal.
Be aware, however, that wood fired oven pizza was not served at lunch.

You have the choice between the delicious traditional Portuguese specialties and a sublime Italian pizza (baked by an Italian in the wood-fired brick oven). In addition, there is a spacious wine list, as well as a spacious dessert list. All desserts are freshly made and taste delicious.
Very relaxed atmosphere and the manager, Cristina, is one of the sweetest people you will meet. To put it in her words: "I have more friends, than customers." For her alone you will want to come back here after the first time (we went 3 days in a row).
Pay attention if you are looking for a quick bite, because you need some time here.

Deeply saddened by the service and food we received on a recent visit. This restaurant has doubled in size and halved in quality. From being welcomed and dined very well over the many years we have dined at Calhou, to being ignored and low quality food. The lamb chops were thin, overcooked and needed a higher quality knife than was given to deal with them - the vast majority of them had to be left untouched - the staff would normally have commented, but no, plates were whisked away and dessert menu given. Salmon had little flavour for my friend. Though, I must say, mine was okay.
The cataplana of guests on another table, looked to be of high quality, but rather a lot of potatoes. A true Portuguese (not tourist) Cataplana does not have potatoes. Regrettably, it will be some time, if ever, before we book here again.

A warm welcome in this family-run gem after a lovely day in Lagos and the surrounding coast. Excellent “cataplana” traditional fish stew, garlic bread from the wood-fired oven, homemade desserts, and perfectly complimentary house wine. The bustling and celebratory rustic atmosphere was filled with both locals and tourists. We were served by the owner who went out of her way to describe her family’s operation, the menu offerings, and make recommendations. At one point a table sang “Happy Birthday” in Portuguese and the owner hugged her young nephew who was enjoying dinner with the family nearby. An enjoyable evening in every way.

Excellent, friendly service. Great atmosphere (Portugal we’re playing Belgium on the TV in one room). We watched the wood-fired pizza team at work and were tempted but went for octopus salad to start (big enough to share) and then squid for me and clams and pork for my wife. Both were delicious and very generous portions. Being outside the tourist area the guests were a mixture of locals and local expats. With a litre of house white for less that €10 the whole bill was less than €60, including dessert for my wife and a vintage port for me. The manager then came over for a friendly chat and a tray of complimentary home made port (very good) and cherry wine.
The experience was so good that we changed our planned wedding anniversary celebration from the restaurant that we at in on honeymoon 24 years ago to O Calhou tomorrow night and, looking at the menu, there are several more visits to make this holiday.
