Great seafood

We were recommended this restaurant and others by our B&B host. When we arrived, they warned us that there might be a load shedding power cut (rife in SA at the time)in 45 minutes. We took the risk and pleased we did, not just because the cut did not take place. Menu has a lot of photos of the dishes on offer, which was very helpful given the options. Staff polite and attentive. Our fish was perfectly cooked and not overcooked which is often the case in fish restaurants. Very simple, if somewhat austere decor but you're not there for the atmosphere. We were there for seafood so can't say if meat dishes were available or not. Wouldn't hesitate going back.

Great food for fish lovers

Ocean Basket has definitely got its training right as in every outlet we have been to the food, service and overall experience is always excellent. Great choice and fast service but you are not rushed. Helpful and friendly staff and there always seems to be a manager keeping the place ticking.

Typical Ocean Basket situated in a busy mall. Service was OK and the food served promptly although not in a rush. Was noisy inside so sat outside to conduct some business.

Excellent take out!

We ordered online and were greatly surprised. The food came quickly and was delicious! Our previous visit was not good, but the restaurant is under new management and we were very satisfied!

We had the king clip and even though it was supposed to be grilled it looked fried with too much dressing and the tuna salad with avo very ordinary..

Tasteless Fodder

Clean venue which looks to have been newly decorated. Service was friendly and orders for 10 of us were served correctly but the food was tastless and dry and basically just fodder for the masses. Am not a frequent visitor to Newcastle but will avoid this place next time I am in the area.

What a bad experience!!

We wanted to test the new vitality healthy dining experience, but what a disaster?! The drinks never came although the restaurant was empty. No one came to clean the table as we requested. The fish was overcooked and the veggies were raw and cold and tasteless. Poor Jabulanie kept on explaining and apologizing. They forgot the Cajun butter and this was apparently why the fish was dry. We ordered sushi for a takeaway and although someone said never to get the sushi, we wanted to try it. Disgusting to say the least. This kitchen need serious help.

We went to have the famous fish and chips and had a lovely evening. The Waitrons were very friendly, the meal was very tasty and the restaurant was clean and enjoyed the evening.

Best and only sushi in Newcastle

Went there for sushi. Although they do not offer hand rolls, the rest of the menu offers good variety. Waiting slightly longer than one would expect, but the sushi was very fresh and therefor worth the wait.

Not bad for lunch

Popped in for lunch on the way to the airport. Nice and clean, but WiFi wasn’t working which is annoying for a foreigner. So much food! We probably could have ordered half the food as these were big dishes. Salad and seafood were nice though.

After a faulty start as the restaurant was very stuffy, we were seated near an open door for fresh air. The seafood platter that we shared was delicious and tasty. Service excellent. Will be back.

Although I visit Newcastle on a very regular basis I have never eaten here before. NIce sunny day so sat outside, had a good meal and will be back sometime. Situated in a new mall and parking easy.
