Very high rated, probably I had high expectations but I didn't get all the excitement. The place is quite simple and the ambience is a turn off. Menu is mainly fish, good overall but nothing to die for

I grew up in Genova and Voltalacarta was a wonderful way to rediscover the traditional cuisine of my hometown in a new way. We had the “Mi fido di te” (“I trust you”) tasting menu. The carpaccio was divine and Chef Maurizio’s Capponmagro was absolutely...amazing. We’re so happy we found this place!More
We picked this place from TripAdvisor. Seemed conveniently located from our hotel and reasonably seasoned in the manner that was described on the website. The place is average inviting, as a general setup, on street corner among a steep pathway. It has that “quelquechose” nevertheless,...I can get it and it seems more for locals rather than touristy. We have ordered the “degustatione” menu, as suggested by Chef Maurizio, menu cleverly named “I trust you”. Well, from that moment we were absolutely gobsmacked. The dishes were deliriously good! Michelin type portions, an unbelievable combinations of tastes and very important and new for us, temperatures of different components of the same dish (cold melon with anchovies and more.. too many to mention). Truly fantastic experience and I would easily place this under “one the best I ever had”. It just makes the CHEF a HERO! I am not going to go on and on as I could write tones.. bottom line, it was impressive. Staff very friendly, Chef Maurizio would accompany every dish and explain history and meaning. He also recommended a great red wine Portofino made. Well, it goes without saying that we have decided to go back in couple of days before our departure from Genova. Good bless Ligurian dishes!More
I had the pleasure to try this restaurant in May during a trip In Italy. They offer excellent products served with a remarkable know how. Traditional Ligurian cuisine executed perfectly,it reflects the magnificent regional food culture and respect the seasonality. The team is very welcoming...and able to make you feel at home. I’ll definitely go back again and again!More
We went for the tasting menù - it was outstanding. Starting from the entrée to the main dishes to the dessert(s). Apart from the quality of food and the taste itself, also the sight was very satisfying - each dish composed carefully and creatively. Dishes...were not big, but the quantity of those will not leave you hungry. We are locals, and I assure you will leave the restaurant with great memories.More
Every time I eat at this restaurant I just add another “best meal of my life!! The owner and chef Maurizio is so attentive to details and the best chef in town. Great location in Genova and sweet cozy intimate atmosphere. The other owner Stefania...hasn’t missed one beat all night long - caring with our needs and likes!! A must go for Genova, the seafood was so fresh and tasty!! A this to say.. I loved it all!.More
Lovely cozy restaurant in the centre of Genoa. Quality of the food is top notch, each dish is cooked to perfection. Atmosphere is very pleasant and the owner Stefania is very kind and helpful. I had such a great experience here. Can’t recommend them enough!
It's a cozy and cool restaurant in the heart of Genova. The atmosphere's romantic and the food super good at Restaurant Voltalacarta. One of the best dishes is Cappon Magro, vegetables and fish, typical and traditional Ligurian flavor. Maurizio is a very good chef. The...staff is kind and professional.More
We choice the 12 taste a la carte menu, every single dish was made with elegance and flavor, every bite was a party in your mouth. The chef Mauritzio is an amazing host. My wife and I celebrated our 10th wed anniversary with my cousins...and there couldn't have been a better choice for our celebration.More
Took my sister here for her 50th birthday and we were not disappointed. We did the 'Trust Us' menu where Chef Mariztio personally delivered and walked us through every single dish he brought out (ended up being 9 in total). The pictures we took still...make my mouth salivate!! Generally speaking, we found the food in Genoa to be sub-par compared to the Cinque Terre coastline with the exception of Voltalacarta.More
Fabulous dining experience at Voltalacarta. Our recent vacation took us to the (western) Ligurian region of Italy, and to the Provence region of France. We ate well, everywhere, but agreed that the meal at Voltalacarta was the best of the trip. The amazing bread basket...at the beginning of the meal set the stage for the rest of the dining experience. The menu was innovative, and the food was plated beautifully and tasted as good - or even better - than it looked. The restaurant is small and intimate; the service was friendly and attentive. Our son, who lives in Italy and is a " self-appointed food critic" was bowled over. We highly recommend Voltalacarta. (The location is a bit outside of the main part of town, but still walkable; it's unassuming from the outside, and you must ring the bell to gain entrance, but it all adds to the charm.)More
We chose this restaurant among others because of the excellent reviews and we had the best time of the evening. As we have never been to Voltalacarta, we tried the tasting menu and it was worth it. First it came their home made bread, my...husband warned me not to fill up the stomach with bread, but I can't help it, it was that good. Next is one of the six starters, fried anchovies with potatoes. Then came squid with potato and ginger soup, that was one of my favourites. Then stuffed anchovies with amazing orange carrot lemon sauce, the sauce just lift up everything. Then came fish with green sauce, followed by fish strudel which was absolutely delicious. The last starter was fish ravioli. The main course was monk fish with refreshing orange sauce topped with crisp chips. Dessert was very creamy panna cotta like. For anyone that is going to try the tasting menu, you have to go with an empty stomach! Service was excellent. Everyone was friendly even we don't speak italian, they explained clearly every course. And the diners were nice too. A very enjoyable food journey.More
The Restaurant was always fully booked an we needed a reservation to get a table for 9 Person. The Staff was friendly and helpful but overloaded and always in a hurry. The mixed Grill with Vegetables was OK but definitely not more than OK as...the pork shop was nearly raw and tasteless except tasting burned which it was not (just tasted like burned). The minced meat rolls were yummy and the vegetables were fried potatoes and 3 very thin slices of Zucchini. The price with 12€ was also OK compare to the Pumpkin Gnocchi with Cheese, same price but very small portion. Pizza nothing special and the Panacotte with Caramel was bitter in taste.More
the room is quite small and not particularly pleasant . service quite patchy . the amusegueule was great, the starter as well . the seafood cannelloni were quite stodgy and the fish nothing special . so a good restaurant , but nothing to write home...aboutMore
As already stated the outside is very unassuming but once inside, it is lovely. Not many covers, and when we visited it was full of locals so do book. We had booked and discovered when we arrived that the chef had put on a menu...with 9 courses of anchovies. Too much for us but we were allowed to choose from the a la carte menu. The chef/owner spent some time with us and went through the menu and he gave us a tasting of some of the anchovy dishes. The home made breads were really good as was the food. Wine also very good and reasonably priced. Highly recommendedMore
