All four of us fell in love with this restaurant at first glance. I’ve been to many Michelin starred restaurants (too many), and this beats most of them in terms of expectations and delivery. Went to L’Arpége in Paris in December and would perhaps not go back, but I already hope to visit JAN soon again. Really a memorable dinner, in many ways. I have read some rewiews here, and I would agree that it wasn’t perfect in every aspect, but the armosphere created by the staff, music and all the small details like the ritual in the beginning, made up for all minor shortcomings and made us feel really special. We had the Cristal Menu. Creative, inventive and great courses all the way, particularly the bobouti. I’m happy we didn’t have the wine packages, because I got the opportunity to get to know Marina, the sommelier, and her skills. She helped us to choose a simply lovely Savennière (100% Chinon Blanc) not to mention a Gevrey-Chambertin by AF Gros. Marina told us the Gros delivery had arrived at JAN just hours before our dinner and we were the first to taste these wines. Remarkable wines, both, for not much more than the four wine packages would have been in total. We arrived at 6pm and the next flight at the table was about start at 8.30. Thus we were a little bit busy with it all, but we totally understand that the price level would be quite different with just one serving / evening. And if we would have chosen the additional cheese experience at the annex Maria on the opposite side of Rue Lascaris, we probably would have had more time to enjoy the last drops of this experience. We had preordered a taxi pickup to get us at 9 pm, and as went to a simple bar nearby to digest our lovely experience with a glass of rosé, Marina came over to have a chat and say goodbye. You wouldn’t have that privilege or honour at the 3-starred L’Arpège, would you..? Simply lovely!

I'm not sure where to start, probably with the food. My partner and I chose the 4 course menu with the wine pairing. Initially we did not choose the addition of visiting the cheese room because none of us are super into fine cheeses, but after the first two courses we were so blown away we knew we had to experience it, so we added it and went after the main course. Our waiter, Zina, accompanied us there and we were lucky enough to have the room to ourselves and Zina to guide us. We told him we were cheese newbies, and he did an absolutely amazing job in guiding us through the room and the cheeses. You could really feel his passion for the food and how he wanted us to have an amazing experience - and we did. I won't write anymore and spoil it, but it's an absolutely 10/10 food experience and a must if you're lucky enough to visit this restaurant, even if you're not a cheese nut! The food itself was absolutely amazing, well-balanced and incredibly tasty throughout the whole menu. The staff was so amazingly kind and helpful. My girlfriend started to feel ill after the dessert (not related to the food), and the staff picked up on it and made her some hot water with fresh slices of lemon to help her feel better. They were very discreet and followed up to hear if she was doing better. Honestly speaks volumes about how nice and attentive the staff is!

Jan is a great experience, I’m very happy about visiting it. First off, the food. It’s a delicious combination of French and South African delicacies. Meat, fruits and spices from South Africa are served along local fish or Niçoise salad or socca. And then the experience is something else! Everything feels carefully designed to complement the food. Lighting, ambience, cutlery and tableware, how the napkins are folded.. it all complements and enhances the flavours and pleasures. And to top it off, the staff is amazing. They are competent, friendly, and they genuinely feel like they’re having a good time in pleasuring customers. I was impressed and delighted, I highly recommend this place and it will be a staple of my visits moving forward

This amazing restaurant is a must to try if you are a foodie and prepared to par the price of a Michelin * restaurant, but then you also get a highly unique experience in taste and a great atmosphere. The especially cheese room was a charming cornucopia boasting a journey of 18 different kinds of cheese and cheese accessories of nuts, jams, pickles and so much more. The French fusion style cooking was pleasantly influenced by South African flavors and ingredients. It was a very recommendable experience.

As an American with one of my roots being South Africa, I had not put going to JAN in Nice in my travel agenda as I was not thrilled by the idea of dining at an S. African influenced restaurant in Southern France. However, when I started to doubt my chances of getting off the wait list for Alain Ducasse-Monaco, I called JAN for a last minute reservation. I did receive a call from Alain Ducasse just 40 minutes after I had booked for JAN but I’m glad I did not trouble myself to going back to Monaco for the evening. Food: Presentation and Flavor was good and worth the 1 Michelin star. Texture and crunch were both there. However, I hoped for a stronger South African influence in all of the dishes. It was on the safer side, perhaps? If you are an Afrikaaner or spent few years growing up in SA like me, you may be nostalgic for more of the SA touches. The pie that came with the beef dish was delicious, filling and reminded me of the days my mom packed the Woolworth’s pies for my school lunch. Cheese room was divine but the only linked to SA was the Pinotage. Dried mango, biltong, guava rolls on the cheese table would have also been great accompaniments to the 20 selections of cheese. Overall, I was surprisingly full after the 4 tasting dishes and the cheese room. Service: I have gone to a plethora of Michelin restaurants (EMP, Brooklyn Fare, Bernardin, Gaggan to name a few) and I must say the service from waiters (different story for the waitresses…) and maître d’ was on par with some of these big names. The dishes came out timely, and my glass of sparkling water was refilled as soon as it was empty. The waiters were knowledgeable of the ingredients and were welcoming. I appreciated that they were not pretentious as some restaurants lose their humility after the Michelin recognition. It was a pleasure talking to Luigi at the end of the meal. It was clear that he cared not only about the guests’ dining experiences but also about the guests themselves. Restaurant he recommended for my next day’s lunch was a great choice. I had a wonderful evening at JAN and I look forward to dining here again.

In my opinion they deliver a very good service. After placing the reservation they asked in advance for any food allergies or restrictions and responded very well to them and changed the menu according to my limitations slightly. The Staff was very kind, very hospital and very caring but not overwhelming with their presence. They really seemed to like to answer all our questions about the items on the menu, about the wines etc. and they did that kindly. Each of the 4 courses we had was very balanced in flavor, had some slightly exotic touches and nuances and was plated beautifully. Every flavor seemed to lead to another creating a very harmonic experience in your mouth, never too strong nor too weak in one direction. That was enhanced by the very well picked wine pairing to the menu (south african ones and french ones, the chenin blanc was amazing!) and also by the interesting non-alcoholic pairing. Again, an amazing experience and we will definitely come back!

My fiancee and I made a reservation for JAN months before our trip as we saw this place books up quickly and we were so glad we did. We ordered the Menu Diamant, which was a 7 course meal and a bottle of red wine. We aren't super knowledgeable with wine, but told them what we liked and you would've thought our waiter was a sommelier! It was perfect to what we love. Every course from the amuse bouche to the last dessert dish was beyond what words could ever describe. Every bite was superb and felt like it was made special for us. The waitstaff were all extremely knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions or fulfill any whims of ours. As part of our order, we were able to experience the cheese room (Maria) across the street before dessert. Everything I said about JAN applies to Maria as well. It was an amazing collection of cheeses and treats that were a perfect compliment to the meal we just had. The waitstaff was also extremely hospitable and knowledgeable. The waitstaff there came over to us as we were eating to ask if we had any questions and he even offered advice to pair a cheese I chose with a chocolate and it was just a perfect combination. The guy knows his cheese! JAN is definitely the most expensive restaurant that we went to but we do not regret it as it was an experience we still look back on and cherish. This was the highlight of our trip and highly recommend it to everyone who visits Nice.

What an experience. We had the 4 course menu, which together with an amouse bouche and a little treat as a dessert felt like a 6 course menu. Portions were well balanced and the taste from start to finish was incredible. We loved the incorporation of small South African treats aswell. One of the best restaurants we have been to. Furthermore the service made the whole experience complete, very attentive and friendly, never too intruding, made us feel at ease and at home. And last but not least don't skip the trip to the cheese room, it's so much more than it sounds like and a unique experience aswell. In total: Thank you for that memory!

We arrived at the restaurant and we were welcomed warmly. We chose the menu and then the wine. We were the second table in the restaurant and therefor got a lot of attention. Foodwise I personally liked it but not LOVED it. I think you need to love and know the South African food a bit better to decide how great this is. What I absolutely adored was the desert (pineapple icecream merengue and fruit explosion with a bit of coconut). Oh and we ordered the cheese “room” definately a must if you love cheese, nuts, spreads, Port and muscat wines. To be honest I would skip dinner and could stay in this beautiful decorated room and candles lighten all over. A must do if you love cheese. Super romantic. And a great experience

Such an amazing experience in a simple and local part of Nice. You walk inside like into a whole other universe and get immersed with not just a meal but an experience. From the presentation, to the service, to the care and attention to detail - it was a remarkable time. The truly unique part that I have not previously seen was a cheese room across the street decorated with season - themed goodies. You almost feel like you cant enjoy an experience more and then they take you across the street! Breathtaking! The personal touches and the individuality of the whole restaurant was something I was truly impressed by. I would go here again and again!

Our experience at Jan could not have been better. We were received just as we walked in the front door with an incredible level of care and attention—-and that care and attention carried over throughout the evening. The food was beautiful and delicious—the service, too, was phenomenal, and the ambiance and atmosphere could not have been any sweeter. The dining room is small, and intimate and the staff seems to outnumber the patrons. Be sure to nod yes emphatically to the cheese course following the meal. We were escorted across the street following our main course to another building, named after the Chef’s mother (maybe grandmother), Maria. The abundance of cheese and accoutrements was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Truly special experience. A thousand thanks to the wonderful staff for making our anniversary so very memorable.

The restaurant is kind of hidden and parking is the onlybissue here. One is welcomed with a bowl and towels for hand washing. The menu de degustation brings you in a world you could only dream of. Spices, tastes smells, dishes from South Africa or just reated here. This is epicurean creativity at its culmination. Just visited a one star Michelin restaurant in Venice with higher pretensions but this experience is incomparable. At the end of the dinner one is lead to the other side of the street for an amazing selection of cheeses and desert. Any point of critic, yes maybe the wines accompanying the menu de degustation could be improved.

This is a smallish restaurant a couple of streets back from the port, cozy but elegant. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. We had the four course Crystal menu, only available in the early part of the evening. The food is an interesting combination of South African food and Mediterranean flavours. After a tasty amuse bouche we had a dish of mieliepap (maize meal porridge) with tomato and caviar which was surprisingly delicious. This was followed by an attractive and tasty haddock course with apple, chorizo and Tête de Moine cheese, an unlikely combination which worked very well. This was followed by a pigeon dish accompanied by a duck confit bobotie. The pigeon was presented on a skewer over a hibachi grill to represent the braii. Dessert was a crispy meringue with sago and buchu,, a South African leaf used for making tea, like rooibos - again surprisingly delicious. The chef has a wonderful ability to combine the cuisines of his home country and his local area of Nice to produce unique and flavourful dishes. Highly recommended.

What a lovely, enjoyable, surprising experience. My husband and I had the 4 course tasting menu (only timeslot available). WOW! The intro appetizer tastings were interesting and beyond delicious. Presentation gorgeous. Service excellent. Food amazing. Wine excellent. (The main dish was great but not my favorite, a bit too much fois gras and other things going on.) The South African bread was most amazing - I asked for another helping. And the butter on the knife - YUM. Never saw that presentation before. We had to cancel on our cheese room because we couldn't eat anymore. Not a huge deal, but we felt a bit rushed to finish our dessert in the time slot. Understand spacing needs and time commitments, and that's why the cheese room makes sense. Overall, far exceeded our expectations, most NYC restaurants and many around the world that we've dined in. Maybe it was just the night, the staff, or the first-time having South African food, but we both highly recommend this intimate and exceptional restaurant.

It has been almost 2 months since we dined at JAN and we are still revelling in the beauty of the experience. It is hands down the best restaurant we have eaten at! JAN is dining at its finest and what makes it remarkable is that the food, textures and flavours are true to their form! Sometimes chefs are a bit on the fancy side and create a menu that is unrecognisable. But not JAN. He is a purist. Every detail is taken care of from the crisp, perfectly ironed tablecloths, wonderful service, exceptional wines, and food that was a truly special blend of French and South African cuisine. We loved the ritual at the beginning, the theatre that is Marie across the road (for those interested in adding the cheese option - do it, it is spectacular and the best cheese board you'll ever experience)!!! Jan has gone above and beyond to refine every detail in his restaurant. The music, art, and even the bathroom was beautiful, nostalgic and special with a touch of drama. We are very proud that Jan has done so well representing South Africans on a global stage!! We will definitely be back and will be certain to visit his other restaurants, including the new one recently opened in South Africa. Thank you JAN and team for a truly memorable and exquisite dining experience!
