We booked a table for the Hogmanay Hoolie at Stravagin having eaten there before. The price per head was not cheap, but good value for NYE, given it was a four course meal with pipes, music and table until 12:45, so a great way to...celebrate as a family of four adults.
The food was excellent and the staff brilliant and efficient. However, it was really difficult to hear what they were saying above the noise of other guests and totally impossible to have a conversation. A solo guitarist starting playing covers half way through the meal. Initially promising, but then he started doing requests and it all went a bit downhill. We had hoped for a bit trad folk mixed in. The Cellar is a small intimate venue and there were a couple of very rowdy tables of 10 or more. They were really noisy, very drunk early on (using the toilet every 10 mins with a queue for the men’s cubicle. Make of that what you like!), up and down from the tables, dancing, stripping off, falling over and helping themselves to wine out of the wall cupboards. We decided not to stay for the bells and left early. We didn’t really want to be in that environment at midnight, which put a bit of a downer on our NYE. Wouldn’t bother booking again.More
