MICHELIN Guide: Good cooking
This seductive subterranean spot beckons you in through its discreet entrance on Bruton Street, immediately transporting you to somewhere altogether more thrilling. The ground floor is great for lunchtime dim sum, but if you’re here for dinner ask for a table on the lower floor, which has a more energising atmosphere. The extensive menus feature a roll-call of luxury ingredients, from whole native lobster to black truffle roasted duck.

First and foremost, the overall impression is that the price can not defend the food and service. We ordered quite «normal» food based on common raw materials (satay chicken, slices of meat, tofu and noodles) and ended up paying £150 for food only. Even though the dishes, except for the tofu, tasted brilliant, I miss a sense of creativity and finess on the dishes. In particular when you take into account the reputation they have and the price they demand. We also ordered a carafe of wine and a drink each (two in total), adding up to £80. The bland taste of the drinks made them a disappointment. In addition, we asked for the drinks to be served as starters, but we got them in the middle of the meal. Drinks should be an easy fix compared to food, so this feels very strange. Yes, the waiters cared about the visitors by being kind and gently giving advice, but when they do not follow our request, and also answers our questions wrongly, the service does not add any value to our visit.

The quality of food in Hakkasan Mayfair is of a very good standard. However, we did not think that its worth the money spend. The service was hit and miss. We ordered a pearl menu, 158 pounds per person and at some point for quite some time , no food was coming, after waiting for quite long time, we had to remind them and they apologised etc and again took some time to start bringing remaining dishes and by then we were fool. So not that good experience for 400 pounds for 2 person .. Yes, the food is good, but one can get the same standard for half the price. And the reviews are correct, its very dark in the restaurant. Would I go there again? most likely no.

Upon arrival the staff seemed indifferent and slightly confused about our booking, so we were left standing awkwardly while they worked it out. We were then seated next to a table which included 4 children, each with a device playing films out loud. We did asked to be moved and this was facilitated after our second request. We ordered still water, and were brought sparkling, again this was corrected, but not the best or most relaxing start to our meal. The food when it came was fairly average and certainly didn’t merit the price charged. The “satay chicken” had no spicing whatsoever and was more like a chicken gravy dish. No one at any point asked us if we enjoyed our meal. Disappointing service and food. A case of good marketing and style over substance. £280 for two courses for 2 people.

On arrival, the service was excessive, fawning, repetitive with an obvious shocked disappointment that we wanted tap, not bottled, water. But food came fast -- too fast - with tedious explanations since it was all on the (admittedly almost unreadable) menu. But then it all stopped. As the restaurant filled, the service evaporated. Huge long pauses. When finally we wanted the bill, this took 45 minutes, to the point that we got up to leave before getting it. All forgiveable had the food been exceptional, which it wasn't. A few dishes were lovely and fresh (the fish in particular) but for the most part it was pretentious, overly complicated with no particular point. The epitome of this was the appearance of gold leaf: in the giant ice cub that was vastly bigger than the cocktail itself, and then later on slices of dried pineapple. This adds no flavour, it is just a gross display of extravaganze, a haunting symbol of globalized inequality which this restaurant clearly cashes in on. Beyond this gross style decision, the duck was dull and tough, the dessert a hodge podge of flacours (mango, peanut butter, some flavourless much and a deep caramel) that was, for all its complexity, deeply dull. The restaurant tries hard to be cool -- they have a DJ whose music was dull, repetitive and more old fashioned than anywhere actually cool. We were so glad to leave.

This is not a patch on their Las Vegas restaurant and has deteriorated considerably since my last visit here about 5 years ago. For a £300 a head meal I expect significantly better service and higher quality food. We were given a table right at the back far right downstairs which I think is where they put people who book late. Its very dark in their, not nicely decorated and is very hot. We asked for a candle to add some light - they bluntly refused and the waiter ( a big guy with a beard, I think of Eastern European descent) was hugely rude to us and really couldn’t give a toss. We asked to move tables, got moved into the main dining area with much nicer decor, cooler with air con and fans and the waiters were much nicer. We ordered their signature duck £130 and it arrived cold having clearly sat on the plate for a while as the pancake had sweated and stuck to the plate - terrible start! We then had salt and pepper squid which tasted great but was very chewy. We then had prawn toast which was a bit bland and nowhere near as good as what you get at Tattu. We had Wagyu beef which was absolutely tiny for £140 but it did have fresh truffle on. The waiter recommended beef ribs which were the best dish. But overall for £1200-1300 for 4 people I would expect so much more. I will return to the vegas one but I think this ones needs to change its introduction page on the menu because this is 100% not amongst the worlds best let alone THE worlds best. Get your staff some manners and customer service training!

Hakkassan Dubai is seriously one of the best Restaurants we’ve been to. Really excited to visit Mayfair and had heard good things. The vibe is Ok…. Quite dark but you expect that. Service started a bit chaotic and got worse. Upon ordering a bottle of Moet 2015, the Sommelier returned to apologise that out of stock and literally shoved the wine list back for an alternative choice before walking away. It took me 10 mins to attract her attention for some advice. Having suggested an alternative (not good, and much pricier)… it turns out that she could sell our original choice by the glass, but not by bottle. We settled for that (knowing full well that if we managed to finish a bottle we would be charged by glass prices !). Hot & Sour Soup lukewarm at best. Silver cod, despite requesting “well done”, was on cusp of cooked. Every course was whipped away in haste as the next queued alongside table like the stack above Heathrow ! Our wait for the bill was extended due to a shift change at 11pm….at this point in evening customers are kind of abandoned by out going staff and ignored by incoming staff who are receiving their instructions. I asked for the service charge to be removed (I never do that !)… for the quickest response of the night from Supervisor requesting why. I explained the above to little more than a shrug. This Restaurant is way below the standard of Dubai, indeed its way below the standard of other Mayfair establishments nearby.

I have always enjoyed my visits to Hakkasan Mayfair with friends, family and colleagues. I truly recommend it to anyone who will listen, especially those who will be visiting the Mayfair area. I also recommend it as a special occasion/business lunch location. At present, I have no intention to recommend it any longer… I want to first state that the male waiter serving our table was professional, polite and this review is not a reflection on him whatsoever. Hakkasan offer a “taste of” set course menu at £39 for 3 courses or £49 for 3 courses but with a cocktail. They have been running this menu for years with a pretty consistent list of options that were in my view, utterly timeless and flawless. Great value too. Upon my latest visit I discovered that the spicy prawn dish has been replaced with a “chilli prawn” dish that was like prawns swimming in a bottled supermarket chilli sauce. The seafood quality was not compromised and they were incredibly well cooked as always, but it was so disappointing to see this dish change for the worse - so noticeably an attempt to show that set menu customers won’t be entitled to the same quality or innovation unless they order from the a la carte menu (in which the spicy prawn dish remains). The same can be said for the beef main. Tiny pieces of meat marooned on one side of a rather sad plate with some uninteresting greens laid flat to take up the space. They have also removed the buttered greens that were included previously to share (on the set menu). More blatant cost cutting… The cocktails were fantastic as always and I truly enjoy the ambiance and artistry of the kitchen staff’s creations. I suspect these issues are nothing to do with them. I wish restaurants like this would appreciate their loyal following and success of their set menu which was unchanged for so many years due to its SUCCESS. If it must be changed (I understand this happens), replace it with something of equal quality and innovation. Staff should try not to be defensive when your loyal customers enquire about your menu changes, too. A business should, in my view, not cut simple and inexpensive green vegetables from its set menu and only offer a side of rice to accompany relatively small main dishes unless they are prepared to come across as very stingy indeed.

To start with I'm a big Mayfair hakkasan fan, has been my restaurant of choice of any celebrations in my life, getting engaged, my son and every single birthday dinner for the last 10 years. So let's say I'm experienced but last week was the first time I've ever left disappointed to the point I may never return. First trip with my multiple allergy son (I have allergies so I know they can accommodate) rang and emailed in advance with head office Alessandro I believe who assured us in writing he also called us as we were driving there, three dishes my son can have (I also know the menu off by heart) this was the wagyu stir fry, the wagyu steak and chicken claypot. To be clear he's 5 so went into it thinking claypot it's a mid range safe dish if he doesn't like it can just leave it. Dining with allergies is stressful but he was very excited and they already knew we were coming this info was available to all staff week in advance and confirmed to be added to our booking. When I arrived the server tried to push the £105 wagyu steak, I said no and I've already contacted she already knew this as she confirmed yes one of you has allergies...she then proclaimed that's the only thing he can have...we then had to wait 30 mins for her to "speak to the manager" had another go at pushing the wagyu steak for a 5 year old, at which point I said I will speak to the manager I've driven 4 hours we have a hospital appointment tomorrow we are trying to make this fun and now it's being ruined and now 5 year old is anxious. I nearly left at this point which I made clear. She returned to advise yes I was correct and it was possible...not surprising to me of course who had it in writing. Anyway food comes it was ok the 5 year old has a good time...but it was just ok. I have photos going back 10 years of the exact dishes ordered to be clear presentation has dropped, the food has become more chain like and it shows why they have lost their Michelin star. Service charge is now 15 % which I did pay but tbh the whole issue with ordering was so poor I shouldn't have - total bill was £455.60 so around £113 per head which is ok for London I guess but the litmus is really my children eat out often around the UK and actually said they prefer a Chinese in Bristol that is 1 quarter of the price and they will do the entire menu any item allergy safe and they do it with service of the up most regard for safety and inclusion. Whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth for somewhere I've loved going and at this price point I really don't think I can justify it anymore...so long to hakkasan for me I hope others have a better time

"Waiting over an hour and a half until our table was ready - hostesses kept on avoiding eye contact whilst assiging people to wait in the already cramped bar area. Hostess looked visibly irrtated when we politely enquired when our table would be ready. When booking we were asked if it was a special occasion (it was) and to include a photo so the person can be specially welcomed - no mention of this when we entered and when I asked the hostess she said she had never heard of this policy. The wait staff were lovely but overworked. On the plus side the food is good - but with a nearly £600 bill for 4 people (only one aloholic drink) I would expect immaculate service. Paid a lot of money for a overall bad experience"

We booked a private room for my birthday and had pre-ordered the food as we were a fairly large group of 9 adults and 4 children. There were several staff floating about initially who were very attentive but this very quickly changed. We ended up with only 1 server so you can imagine the delays with the food. Starters came out very quickly however we had to wait an incredibly long time for our mains. The server did come and apologise but offered 1 mock chicken dish between 13 of us to make up for the delay!! An extra soup took nearly 20 minutes to arrive..... The mains came out so slowly and the rice only came out by the time everyone had finished their meals!! Absolutely terrible and whilst the restaurant was busy, they had our menu and knew this was a private even. When I later emailed the lady I had coordinated with to explain what had happened and how the delay really spoiled what should have been an amazing afternoon, I was simply told they would feedback to the team. Now bearing in mind I had spent nearly £1800 that afternoon on that meal, there was not even any attempt to offer any kind of compensation (even £100) for the incredibly slow service despite me pre-ordering the food to avoid this sort of thing happening. We would not be dining here again anytime soon and I would not advise you book any private event for a large party as our experience was definitely ruined by this and not what we had expected when you're paying that sort of price per head.

I am a regular customer at hakkasan Mayfair so wasn't shocked when my mum wanted to go for lunch for her 70th birthday. We were put on a small table in the corner that could barely fit the 3 of us and the restaurant wasnt even full. Took 20 minutes to order drinks and another 20 minutes to order food. Anytime we needed something we can call staff they never came over to see if we were ok or needed anything. The food came out in drips and drabs because the staff said they couldn't fit all 3 mains on the table. Very disappointed to say the least.

You can tell they lost their Michlin Star. Service was not great. We had a Pearl set menu. At £150pp it's quite pricey. The food was good, not mind blowing but good. Unfortunately our server just kept delivering plates of food to us while there was still a lot on the table and just dropped them and left. Never going through what we had been served, sometimes it felt like guesswork trying to work out what we were eating. There are certainly better restaurants in London. Plus.....the swarm of Gen Z kids that wear little to nothing that descended on the place to not enjoy the food (they order 1 drink and an entree) but take so many blooming pictures and videos. They were on the stairwell, the bathroom, filming the table etc. all with ring lights and taking forever. No regard for others trying to enjoy a night out. The staff should ask them to stop after 1 or 2 pictures. Clearly they use the restaurant as a photo shoot location rather than come to dine. The management needs to get a grip on this. It was annoying and we will certainly never return.

Very disappointing meal. The cloakroom and front of house staff were the only part of the service that warranted the price tag. The bar staff lacked personality and could learn a lot about service from the restraunts neighbours like Sexy Fish and Amazonico. Once seated the waiter was good and friendly, offering support and guidance on the menu. We went with two taster menu ( I believe it was called Shou) and a bottle of Sake. The starter was very good and was delivered by our waiter who explained the dishes (this is standard for a restaurant of the calibre). The main course was HUGE! And not in a good way. The portions were much too big and the lady who delivered the dishes didn't explain them and had to keep rearranging the table to get all the plates down. It felt clumsy and unrefined. The chicken was overcooked and dry. We ended up leaving half, but kindly got a doggy bag. The dessert was great and very flashy which was fun. Unfortunately the dishes didn't get collected after we finished for 40mins until I asked for the cheque. It made it annoying to relax afterwards and finish our Sake. It's also removed the opportunity for coffees or other after dinner options. I also had to ask for the bill twice, but assuming because the first person I asked wasn't our waiter he just didn't care and left us waiting until 5mins. It was my birthday which was on the booking, but got overlooked which was disappointing. I told the waiter that I wasn't happy having to ask for the cheque twice or that we had finished plates left on the table for such a long time and he got annoyed, which really pissed me off. A 15% service charge, which was £55 on the bill and I couldn't even get the bill or plates taken in a timely manner is a joke. Not wanting to get into a complaint with my wife on my birthday I begrudgingly paid. I will never return and I will make sure others know.

We went to Hakkasan in a group of 4 friends for a special occasion. I was very disappointed… The food was very good, the cocktails were average but the service was nothing short of arrogant. We were shown to our table which was right next to the kitchen and the waiting staff service area which meant we couldn’t hear each other over the noise. We politely asked if we could move to one of the other empty tables around us, they waitress asked why and she actually laughed when we said we couldn’t hear our conversation. She walked off doing nothing about it. We asked another member of staff and he went away to look and never came back to us. After some time we asked someone else and they said no other table was available. (there were empty tables around us) When we ordered food the waiter told us we couldn’t have two people having one set menu and two people having another. So we couldn’t order what we wanted. The staff where quite frankly rude and arrogant. The ambiance was nice in other parts of the restaurant but where we sat we couldn’t converse easily. There are plenty more Michelin star restaurants that act like they want your service so I would avoid this one.

It was a HUGE disappointment. This is by no means the restaurant for those of you who want to experience a culinary journey in quiet surroundings. And it is NOT recommended for couples who want to be able to have a normal conversation. We were at Hakkasan Hanway place in 2017, and got to experience the Michelin star they deserved back then. So, we were looking forward to trying Hakkasan Myfair this time, but got incredibly disappointed. The staff are pleasant enough, but this does little to improve the atmosphere otherwise. It was so loud that we couldn't hear our own voices. We almost had to shout to be able to hear each other. Absolutely awful. The table next to us was so loud that it was impossible for us to talk. The food was good, but in no way they deserves a Michelin star. The fact that they have lost the star, was probably a right decision. We ordered "Shou" - a 9-course menu. What ruined much of the culinary experience was that we were served most of the dishes at the same time, which meant that the food eventually became cold. We were first allocated two of the dishes, then six at the same time. There was a huge amount of food, so we didn't have a chance to eat it all. It's good to get value for money, but personally I prefer to be served smaller and more exciting dishes. Preferably one and one dish, so you have time to enjoy. We felt this was more like Chinese tapas. We suspect the restaurant chooses profit rather than customer experience. Note: Don't expect to be able to choose how much to tip yourself. We were automatically charged 15%.

Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
