We had the set menu. I was a bit surprised when the waitress told us the portions were smaller than usual as this is not normally the case with a set menu costing £21 for 2 courses, but anyway we ordered a few side dishes...to be on the safe side. That proved to be insufficient! The food was decent enough, but for a restaurant marketing itself for its sea food and fish, there was precious little fish on the plate. The fish taco starter consisted of one thin strip of fish and the sea bass fillet main course is best described as a thin slither. The fish and chips was more like a child's portion. After the meal we visited the supermarket opposite to grab something to eat at home which probably best sums up the experience.More

We went for lunch. The dining room was empty but we still felt very comfortable and welcome. The food was excellent - ceviche, octopus, grilled prawns, tuna steak - and cooked to perfection. There was a good choice and it was hard to choose! What...elevated this to a solid 5 was the service. The waitress was charming, unobtrusive but still helpful and proactive. So delighted to have found this restaurant which from now on will be the go to place for family celebration meals. I went with my mother yesterday and immediately was made to feel like a valued customer. The informally elegant room is high ceilinged, attractive...and on a sunny May day the dappled light added to the theatre of a relaxed, Friday lunch. Where the restaurant really excelled though was a) the service and b) the food. Our waitress seemed to be the only person serving but every enquiry was perfectly timed, no long waits nor any rush to move us on, she was friendly, helpful and approachable. A true asset to Matthews. The food was almost faultless other than bizarrely just a little too much in terms of quantity but the flavour of every dish was incredible. The tomato salad, the bisque, the seabass all were the best I've ever tried. Don't hesitate to go if you like fish and even if you don't there are meat and vegetarian alternatives. Worth every penny.More
