Very disappointed to write a poor review for what used to be one of my favourite restaurants. Food and service were good. Beautifully prepared food, but portion sizes so small. We went on New Years Eve. Bowl of soup so small you served it with...a teaspoon. Intermediate course ok. Sorbet - one tiny scoop. Main course and veg - so disappointingly small. If this had been a normal size portion it would have made up for the other courses. Dessert course ok. With drinks and service charge we paid £246 for 2 of us and left feeling disappointed and slightly hungry! I’m all for fine dining, and quite happy to pay for a good meal, but that was embarrassing. I really hope that on a normal night your portions are acceptable. We didn’t say anything on the night as no one likes to make a scene on a special night, but I bet I wasn’t the only customer that felt like that.More

Happy New Year Gary. I am glad that you enjoyed our food and service. Our 7 course menu, the size of the dish is the same as our tasting menu and everyone knew it. The price on the top of the 2 NY menu 85£...More

The food was really good, we came on New Years Eve to celebrate. it was a shame that it all ended before midnight as I would have liked to have stayed on.

Thank you for your comment. Yes it was a shame that all our customers finished their meals before midnight because I would love to stay to have a drink and celebrate the New Year with everyone.

Our romantic dinner got off to an excellent start. The scallop and bacon starter was good. The Pea Velouté was outstanding and one of the most delightful dishes I’ve tasted in a long time. The sea bass with saffron risotto looked beautiful garnished with a...black squid ink tuile. The dish was not enhanced in an way by a side of two types of potato and 3 different boiled vegetables. The chocolate cheesecake was excellent and the berry panna cotta was very nice. The chef really knows what he’s doing but I sense his flair is stifled by the intimidating owner. There was a row going on in the kitchen and the atmosphere was tense. Gordon Ramsay is unlikely to visit The Orange Tree but his advice would be to give the decor some attention and the owner needs to let the chef shine.More

Booked 6 months ago and really looking forward to it . We are newcomers to the area and had several meals out in far nicer surroundings . We could not be more disappointed. We were put in the back conservatory but with silver stretch covers...on the seats and an orange bow , reminiscent of a bad wedding decor . The silver lamp on the table was rusty and the wall decoration had runs coming down the wall . The plastic hydrangea and the shiny voile added nothing to the ambiance . We had the tasting menu with paired wines . Nothing was presented nicely . Outdated food presentation , a sorbet served in a old style wine glass !! Vegetables just plain boiled ! Still hungry after course 5 . Saving grace was the cheese board . Wine was just presented with the only explanation like this is a Cabernet from France . Waiting to hear how it paired with the meal , no explanation at all . Have been to nicos in Edinburgh and Glasgow and cost half the price and they know how to explain the pairing of wine . £230 for 2 people and can honestly say we have had much nicer in Torquay ie The Elephant and even ou local the bull and bush .Overpriced , dated and disappointing .More

Wonderful meal to celebrate our engagement. Every dish perfectly cooked, and appreciated the complimentary drinks at the end of the evening. Service was friendly and efficient, but not obtrusive. Looking forward to returning.

A fantastic experience from start to finish. We opted for the tasting menu with matched wine. A great experience. The staff were friendly and extremely attentive. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Celebrated my Mum's birthday at the "Orange Tree". Staff really welcoming and helpful, they even arranged for a little birthday cake with candles. After all the lockdown woes, what a wonderful place to visit and enjoy some beautiful food. Highly recommend!! Looking forward to our...next visit.More

Fantastic food, clean cosy environment and friendly welcoming staff. My partner opted for the herb crusted lamb cooked medium which arrived cooked perfectly and beautifully presented, I myself chose a game and ale pie with colcannon mash, the game included venison, partridge, pigeon and rabbit, again all packed...full of flavour...desserts also amazing and big thank you to Nelson our waiter who made our night complete. The orange tree is highly recommended 👌More

If you are looking for overpriced and a "couldn't care less attitude" then visit this restaurant. Our greeting from our waiter (Nelson) set a high standard which the rest of the team couldn't match I am afraid. A lovely Duck starter which was both tasty...and great to look at was followed up by a drab Lamb dish (with a soggy herb crust) and a bang-average Chicken dinner for my partner. I must compliment Nelson on the superb way he handled my feedback regarding the meal but some of the staff their made us feel less than welcome, in particular a stout gentleman whom could not have looked any less friendly and really should be smiling given the prices being charged! A truly disappointing experience indeed.More

As the venue for a special family occasion, each one of our group of five found The Orange Tree to be the perfect choice. The vegetarians among us were bowled over by the choices and the menu overall was excellent. Ambience was just right and...we had a relaxed experience with just the perfect amount of attention from the excellent and professional staff. The meal itself was superb, from starter through to dessert, tasty and beautifully presented, accompanied by a good red wine. Compliments to all those involved in what truly was the best meal I have had the pleasure of eating. I am rarely moved to offer a review but this restaurant will remain in my memory for a long time.More
