We were delighted with the latest addition to the Brass Bell, Seaweed and Salt, their tapas and sushi bar. They have partially enclosed one of the decks adjacent to the kiddies pool with a gorgeous curved wooden roof and decorated the space with a mixture of hanging basket chairs, couches and wooden tables and benches - a very Mediterranean feel. Of course the views are just amazing, but that's a given for the Bell! The menu offers so many great choices, and the quality of food and value for money are excellent, as always. We love the service offered at this establishment, the staff always strike the perfect balance of attentiveness and distance. The Brass Bell is a great all round restaurant, and this new section would make a fabulous venue for private functions (seats between 80 and 100 I think).

Many thanks, Wheezela for your 5-star review of the Bell! I could not have put it better myself... I have great hopes for my Seasalt & Weed - already a great favourite with the locals. The laid back music of Andre Nel on Saturday evenings is a treat. Your support is greatly valued! Tony Owner

On our recent trip back to South Africa we were taken to lunch at the Brass Bell, what a fabulous setting and the food was fresh and tasty and certainly not overpriced as one would have expected. The staff were friendly and attentive. Highly recommend if visiting Kalk Bay

Not sure what the restaurant we were in is called as there are several. We had a great view of the sea and for a large party we were served quickly and efficiently by a number of very attentive waitrons. For the most part we had sea food, personally I had a mix of fried and grilled calamari, sharing with a friend, which was excellent. The burgers were also enjoyed as were the Pizzas. The drinks came quickly and there are several different beers on offer.

Thanks for your very positive review of the Bell, Foodimmo! Your support is greatly appreciated. You are quite right, the Bell has several venues - each with its own name and identity and for most of them they have their own separate kitchen. The latest addition is Seaweed & Salt that serves sushi and tapas. Tony Owner

Being regular visitors to the brass bell for 25 years, we were very disappointed this weekend. The service was not up to standard. The staff are not attentive and spend a lot of time talking to each other rather than keeping an eye on their tables. The food was under cooked - pizza dough raw and soggy and minimal cheese. Our waiter brought an ice bucket for our wine after we had finished the bottle. He advised that he had a hard time finding an ice bucket... At this point we advised the waiter that we wanted to move to the smoking section. He then just forgot about us. There were no bar stools and the barman had to arrange this as our waiter was nowhere to be found. The waiter did not come to check on us to see if we wanted anything else to eat or drink and although we tried to get his attention he did not even look in our direction. Finally we had to ask the barman to request our bill from the waiter. This has been a favourite spot of ours for +25 years, we have been regular patrons, however we will not be going back and will not recommend. This is not the first time we have had bad service and food over the last few months, it just seems to be going from bad to worse. It is a pity because the views are fabulous, this it seems it the only constant.

We re- visited the brass bell after having a nice meal there a couple of years ago.... Unfortunately the fish a chips and the backed Kingklip took an ages to arrive and then it was just all very poor overall with the peas stone cold , chips greasy and fish lacking in flavour and quality. Service was very slow, inattentive and no one enquires how our meal was .. We will not visit again . Very disappointed.

Very disappointing to hear you had such an unfortunate experience.. I have taken serious notes of your concerns to address with the staff. There have been one or two changes in Management and hopefully this will result in an overall improvement in the dining experience at the Bell... We appreciate your review and bringing this to our attention - Thanks! Tony Owner

This past weekend my partner and I were able to get a table for 2 by calling ahead half an hour before intending to dine.We considered ourselves lucky as Kalk Bay was packed due to sunny weather. The seating experience went quickly and we were able to get a prime table next to the window. Our server Ashton welcomed us warmly and then that is where the warmth and experience went downhill. My partner and I both being in the hospitality industry both were very understanding of a long waiting time for two orders of hake and chips with calamari combo as of course restaurants are finding their beat post re-opening during the pandemic and perhaps being short-staffed. We waited a total of an hour with a second drink being forgotten that we ordered during a long wait.We as well as other tables were having to flag down service to follow up on our orders etc. One could see that the kitchen was slammed. We understood this however what is key during times like these is to have someone touch base with the tables to apologize for the wait and keep people updated on the progress of their meals. I only observed one waiter doing this with his tables and seemed so on it with his patrons appreciating some form of advising what was going on. We were advised that they were not expecting such a demand and I felt that the Host rather should have been upfront at time of taking the booking around the long waiting periods. For sure you want to get foot traffic into your restaurant however you need to touch base with customers. Our server kept saying he was doing the best he could. We got that but the lack of communication was evident for.may tables. The food itself was great, our side of Chilli was forgotten and a walk over to the pass remedied that. We sure will be back however as much as patrons need to be understanding around reopening during the pandemic the cost of communicating effectively goes a long way.

I must say that I have always been satisfied with the service at the Brass Bell, and the experience at Salt and seaweed was no different. The waiter was attentive, and friendly, as they have always been. I enjoyed golden brown fried battered hake and chips, one of my favourite things in the world, and I will have the same again! The chips were so delicious, that everyone at the table wolfed them down and we topped up three times!! There is a a stylish and comfortable ambiance about this place, with a live guitarist and singer in the background, that maked the experience one that you want to repeat...soon!

We used to frequent this restuarant in the past and it was a highlight. We went there yesterday and we were very disappointed. We ordered the seafood platter for two. The fish was old and cooked from frozen, every piece of seafood on the plate was old and seriously over cooked. The place was not even full. I suggest they get a new chef asap and use only fresh produce. Never see me again, or my friends!

An afternoon well spent at Brass Bell.. Kalk Bay Seafood Soup to start: a local Bouillabaisse of fresh fish, mussels and squid. Grilled Baby Calamari for mains. Bubbles, a visit from an inquisitive seagull & panoramic sea views. What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon in the historic fishing village of Kalk Bay!

What a fantastic summer and family new addition to the Bell. We loved the design, decor and feel of the restaurant and cannot wait to spend another great day or early evening tapas meal with the family on its deck while watching the sea. The menu has some great light tapas meal options and of course sushi is always a winner.

Thanks, Inge for your 5-star review of Seaweed & Salt. Your support is greatly valued! This new addition to the Bell has proven to be a winner, giving further variety to what the Bell has to offer. On Saturday evenings the venue hosts live entertainment with Andre Nel and over the weekends a fish braai is held on the small beach next to Seaweed Tony Owner

This is the best spot in Kalk Bay it has the perfect location and a great setup. There are multiple venues to give you a different experience each time and the right atmosphere for any mood or group. Lots of seating which also helps. The staff are friendly and helpful but the food and service is a bit slow but I guess normal for Cape Town. The food itself is also very tasty and well priced with a good variety.

A multi- time return customer to this establishment. Quality has never been great but it is well priced so one accepts the compromise. This last time was very poor, staff tried hard and were friendly and efficient, but the food was so poorly prepared the overall level became unacceptable. Simple dishes like hake and chips, horrible, soggy batter and uncooked fish as well, not on. Will definitely not return.

On Father's Day, I called Brass Bell to check availability and spoke to a lady advised that they were fully booked at the time (around 12:00), however, would be able to assist as of 13:30. I then proceeded to ask if reservations are required and she said NO reservations are required as only walk-ins are accepted and further mentioned NO reservations are taken as it is based on a firs come, first serve basis. Upon our arrival at the restaurant, we were told to take a seat and that they would see to us shortly. As we were waiting, we noticed "reserved" tables NOW if reservations aren't required and your normal procedure being "first come, first serve" why in heavens name would you reserve tables for certain individuals? When I enquired with the lady whom I conversed with telephonically as to why she was contradicting herself, she mentioned that these guests have booked two week in advance - THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. She initially lied when I called her because after eventually being seated, "reserved" signs were placed at so many tables around us. I would hate to think that she is the owner, because that is NO way to treat any person, regardless of the colour of their skin. She was very friendly with white of complexion customers... This wasn't our first visit, we have been there many times before BUT it was most certainly our last. Two positive things - The head waitron Fanuel's service was exceptional and the food delicious. Regards, Jade

Welcomed by friendly staff and directed to our table with spectacular sea views, good memories of years coming here flooded back, and we were not disappointed. Excellent service, especially from Carlos. The freshest hake, battered crisply with fabulous fries and a creamy tartar sauce. The mussel starter was also a winner. We finished off with a very homely Cape brandy pudding, served extravagantly with cream and ice-cream. Plus they were very accommodating with our dogs. A truly must-have memorable experience.

Very pleasant evening having a drink then food with friends and cousins. This is a down to earth bar/restaurant with good beers, good food and friendly staff and locals. The menu has plenty of choice of seafood and meats at a reasonable price.Do not be put off by having to go under the railway to get to it, it is worth it. Worth a visit if in the vicinity.
