Came here for the first time and we were blown away by the food. We had the 10 course tasting menu and loved every course. The servers were excellent & all spoke English! The tasting menu was very reasonably priced.they also have a 7 course tasting and a vegan tasting. Drinks were excellent. My hubby had a Cadillac Margarita. He switched the tequila used for Don Julio. The price of the margarita went up to 500 pesos by adding Don Julio. So beware switching to Don Julio in your Margaritas. We complained about the price they charged for switching tequila. We could have bought a whole bottle of Don Julio for 1 drink. 500 pesos for a Don Julio Cadillac Margarita is stiff even for the US…Los Angeles! The carajillo was outstanding. My mocktail was excellent and very well presented, but it was served in a very small bird glass. Overall exceptional food and service. Diego the chef was a master in creating his food! Thanks for the excellent experience Makal!

Michelin star quality food in a cozy but modern boutique restaurant. Makal was by far my favorite culinary experience in Vallarta. The passion of its chefs can be felt in the bold flavors of the menu and creative presentations. If you are visiting Vallarta, this is an absolute must try. Upon arrival, our party was warmly greeted by the staff and shown to a cozy little table by the pianist. We ordered a few “Makalitas” (see photos) and enjoyed piece after piece of masterfully played music by @crutzegram. When it came time to order the waitress provided recommendations and showed us how the dishes would look on an ipad. Our well informed appetites led us to select the fish of the day, steak, and chocolate ice cream (see photos). Our food came out quickly and everything was perfectly executed. The flavors were bold and unique, yet comfortably familiar. By the end of the meal I was left wanting for nothing but the check. Much to my surprise this enchanting evening only cost us around $1200 pesos, which is a fraction of the price for comparable food at other local upscale restaurants. Needless to say, if you have the chance to grab a table at Makal, or catch the live piano music Friday and Saturday nights, do it.

We were looking for a new unique destination for dinner. Makal did not disappoint. We ordered the "tasting menu". Ohmygosh - it was delicious. We were treated to Carla and her knowledge of the location and the dishes being served. She recommended a wonderful "Tuba" cocktail that my husband and I just loved. I would advise this is a little pricey, but the food was so good and the atmosphere did not disappoint our request for something new and different.

We stumbled across this new restaurant in the heart of the romantic zone one evening and came back to try it out after speaking to the manager. The decor was really nice and modern and the food ended up being amazing! Not only was the food super delicious but the service was outstanding. We were given free welcome drinks (as they were new) from the barman and also received free appetizers and desserts! We loved this place so much that we returned for brunch on Sunday later that week. Brunch was also just as good and featured live music as we sipped on our Mimosas and dove into our chilaquiles! I'd highly recommend it!

My boyfriend and I ate dinner at Makal last night and we were blown away. Everything from the beautiful plates and design of the space to the thoughtful, complex cocktails made it such a special experience. And that was before we even tasted the food. Hands down best meal we’ve had here, and we live here! We started with the tlayuda (not sure it’s on the every day menu but it was incredible) and each ordered the cochinita pibil. Throughout the meal we just couldn’t believe how tender and flavorful it was, we were in awe. On top of all that, our server Jenny was so pleasant, attentive and informative that we wished she could have just hung out with us. She told us so much about the ethos of the chef and the traditions they hope to represent from across Mexico - this was not just a meal, it was culturally important art that we enjoyed immensely. Can’t recommend this place highly enough if you’re looking for a very memorable evening.

Makal is a new restaurant in PV that serves creative cocktails and refined versions of traditional Mexican fare accompanied by superb Mexican wines in a modern and casual setting. The chef’s passion for Mexican ingredients and preparations is evident and his food compares favorably with that from Allium and Ofelia Bistro in Guadalajara. The fine food is complemented by service which is attentive while being friendly and relaxed. Makal is unquestionably one of the best restaurants in PV and a visit there is an opportunity to experience the soul of Mexico.

Makal is the kind of restaurants that takes you to another world, the world of service and outstanding cuisine. Recently recommended by a friend we decided to visit. It was a surprise to find this unique gastronomy jewel! Smooth and ellegabt taste for decoir, big smiles and gentile service is what gives you the welcoming. We were recommended by Karla, Makal Ambassador to try the Mezcal speciality and we did (a drink prepared with Rousted pineapple, Line and Lemon Extracts; ginger and so. Wow it was refreshing and delicious at the same time. We receive an hor d’oeuvre courtesy from the chef which was a demi-glace Brisket mini empanada. Secondly we ordered a tlayuda (pre hispanic look a like pizza) with rib eye, beens sauce, vegetablea and raddiah as topping. Incredible texture and flavora fuaion. Tortilla soup, mushroms ceviche and hand madr tortillas followed the tlayuda. Woooow! Spectacular; it went better and better. As main course i ordered short-rib demi-glace and rosted baby vegetables. Perfection is what ahould this dish ahould be called! Finally as we were celebrating my friend’s birthday we have the perfect closure of an extraordinary dinner: crêpes cheesecake!!!! Our dinner experience combined with an outstanding service allowed us to leave thia gem with a big smile. I totally recommend you all to visit thia place that I am very sure you will love.

Our group of five decided to try this restaurant upon the recommendations of friends of the owners. Although none of us planned to drink Mezcal, we were more than thrilled with the creative and tasty non-alcoholic cocktails that were served on a slim, piece of wood with sticks of lit rosemary! The visual delights, smoky aroma and mouth-watering drinks had us all ooohing and ahhing. Although I can’t recall all the dishes we ordered, suffice it to say we were given suggestions to meet all our culinary preferences. And, each plate from seafood, to meat to vegetarian arrived looking lovely and oozing with flavorful spices.

We heard about this new restaurant from a fellow traveler who hadn’t had the chance to go yet. We decided to try it after hearing that mahi-mahi was the catch of the day. The wine list is not extensive, nor are the options for wines by the glass, however our waitress knew all about each and I enjoyed a very nice Chardonnay from Mexico which I will actually look to buy when I am back in the US. The chef sent us an octopus sopas to try and it was AMAZING! We ordered guacamole and each had the mahi-mahi and managed to find a little room in our stomachs to try the chocolate sampler. We are only here in PV for the week and we are looking forward to going back to try the brunch before we leave. The staff was super friendly, very knowledgeable about the food and drinks and they didn’t make us feel rushed to vacate our table. If you are looking for a fresh approach to traditional dishes then this is a top choice for sure!

For many years I’ve visited Puerto Vallarta and tend to revisit old favorite restaurants and eating basic Mexican staples, particularly Chile Rellenos. This time four of us went for dinner at Makal based upon recommendation of friends who live in PV half the year. Fabulous! We shared a guacamole appetizer and were surprised with a tiny complimentary empanada appetizer, too. Two of us had catch of the day, one had short ribs with mole sauce and I had pork with a sauce I was unfamiliar with. The server (Carla) brought out a sample and 4 tiny tasting spoons. All four meals and desserts we ordered were yummy. We all loved the round churros with caramel sauce and ice cream. The only sad thing was due to Covid there were few customers dining at this little gem that night.

Fabulous 5 course meal with exceptional presentation. Definitely gourmet. My only issue is that they do not include the 16% IVA in the price of the meal on the menu which is common practice at other restaurants. So, the 5 course meal appears to be 777 pesos or approx $38US. However with the 16% added in it actually comes to 900 pesos or $44 per person without drinks or tip. I'm not saying it isn't worth it but it helps to not get sticker shock. The average prices they show are misleading. The food is so incredible, I would like to see them own their top tier status and not present themselves as a middle of the road establishment.

I'm a very indecisive eater so I went with the tasting menu. Everything they served was absolute perfection! The marinated pork tacos just melts in your mouth, I've never had anything like it. Drinks were incredible and the staff was delightful. This was the first meal I ate upon arrival to Puerto Vallarta, Makal has set the bar so high I'm afraid the rest of the trip will only be downhill from here. This place is 100% a must!

This is the best upscale Mexican cuisine in zona Romantica. Food is amazing. Food presentation is beautiful. Chef is daring and creative in only working with local ingredients. The bartender is equally skilled in crafting cocktails which compliments and food and atmosphere! The price is reasonable and I highly recommend this. Good for couple and family.

COME HUNGRY. This was hands-down the best meal we had in PV, and we went to some of the "best" restaurants. In fact, shortly after we returned home, we ate at a 2 Michelin Star restaurant in our city... and while it was a lovely meal, we left saying that Makal ranked higher in our Favorite Meals list. The tasting menu was creative, exciting, and really showed off modern Mexican cuisine. Other restaurants felt like French techniques with Mexican ingredients, for example, but this was its own beautiful thing. We still dream about the mushroom ceviche and had so much fun with it, taking our time and trying to figure out the recipe so we could recreate it at home. Just like the food, the atmosphere is bright, colorful and fun. It wasn't stuffy, or trying too hard. The cocktails were creative and well-balanced. The service was attentive and friendly. The special presentation of our anniversary dessert was so thoughtful and touching, not cheesy. It's not a tourist trap, it's just a gem. If I was forced to list a "complaint"... it would be that was that it was just a little too much food. My husband was fine with it, but I could have done with one or two fewer courses or smaller portions for some, but that's really not the worst problem to have! You can tell that the crew takes great care and pride in their work, and has fun with it. Just a really wonderful experience. We will 1000% be back any time we're in the area.

We have been coming to PV for over 25 years and have tried many of the high end restaurants and we always leave disappointed. Not this time! Makal delivered on a gourmet experience from top to bottom. Every course was exceptional and unique. The pear salad was fresh and the dressing was delightful. The lamb baracoa taco was tasty and the mahi-mahi was fresh and with a wonderful sauce. Both deserts were yummy. We had the wine pairing and they were spot on. The service was professional and the chef was super friendly. We will definitely go back.
