Been going here for years and years so not a one off review - must have had at least 70-80 meals here over the past 15 years.
On our recent trip the staff dealt with COVID very well and they should be congratulated. It felt organised, safe and friendly.
I have one gripe that has been a theme of both of the past couple of trips. The lady carving spends a great deal of effort in carving the thinnest meat possible. What you end up if with is her putting scraps that have fallen apart on your plate. The amount put on your plate is also substandard and 2 out of the 4 of us had to ask for more, that left one almost vegetarian and one too embarrassed to ask. I'm sure even in the current economic climate that is not what Toby are aiming for.
We all understand a profit needs to be made but on a Sunday the prices are hiked up and that should be reflected. There was plenty of meat waiting to be served so that was not an issue either.
Didn't complain to management on either of the occasions as the family asked me not to. But this is a friendly reminder from a long standing customer that Toby should not forget why people come to their restaurant.

Visited on a Sunday at 4.30pm...we had booked online & asked for a quiet table for our autistic Daughter. They had our booking but didnt notice our request. We were told there was a wait as they were extremely busy but once I explained our request, we were seated straight away.
The staff are friendly & welcoming despite being rushed off their feet. Our waitress did say its normally quieter at this time so was unsure why it was so rammed.
We queued for the carvery for approx 15 minutes. It was ok, we only got a slither of meat & the large yorkie puds were very crispy, veg was tasty as was gravy.
Not sure we would return here....it was just too busy for our liking. We've been to the Toby in Cannock & that seemed to be much better organised.

Tried this Toby Calvert on 5th March at 18.30 as my granddaughter likes roast dinners, and has always looked nice when I have driven past. However unfortunately I can only report a mediocre meal and atmosphere. The carvery was ok but had a grumpy gentleman in charge of carving, the spoons used to self serve the vegetables were to hot (to close to warming lamps) to hold to the point of being dangerous for a child when informed of this by another customer the reaction or lack of it was complete indifference. The food was at best 5 out of 10, the best part of the meal was my granddaughters kitkat chocolate sunday dessert which was excellent.

We have just returned from breakfast, with friends, here. We haven't been for about 18months and had a superb experience however I was shocked at the change in this Toby. Our first impressions were of an overflowing bin and rubbish blowing about, then a sign to say the toaster was out of service!! The waitress was very pleasant but for most of the time she seemed to be by herself, she offered us vegetarian sausages then found that they hadn't got any so had to apologise to us. On approaching the counter I was, to be honest, pretty disgusting, the bacon looked anaemic (glad I was vege), the juice in the beans was like water, there were no sauces left in the dishes, there were 6 hash browns left, 3 eggs and a lots of bits of white and not a chef insight. There were only 3 slices of bread in a massive basket and about 10 crusts but, of course no toaster.
After eating our meals we went for coffee top ups and there was very little left in both of the pots so had to ask for more and the station was covered in milk and sugar.
What on earth has happened to this Toby? Was it just a bad day? We left feeling that we certainly had not got value for money and went to finish our breakfast with toast and jam at home!

Went this Sunday evening having went for a Carvery during the week which was nice and hot and all the veg was cooked well.
So decided to try again after sitting Down found out the mash was not mashed properly and there was big hard potatoes and the carrots was not cooked and was hard had to wait for the stuffing waitress came over asked if everything was ok explained about the issues and was told she would go back and get some freshly made mash and get the stuffing came back with a small bowl of mash which still had big potatoes in it was told again she would bring some more out after waiting a while by this time my wife and son and daughter had nearly finished there meals by this time the meal was ruined asked to speak to the manager she came over explaining again what has happened to be told that there was an issue with the steamers and that the mash had been taken off the menu with an apology and charging us all child Carverys and not adults ones I still felt cheated with the £50 pound bill and and let down by the response and by saying that she will look after us next time we are in. Well we are hear now.
I don’t think there will be a next time.
let down yet again better off cooking my own Roast dinners from now on I think I will start to look for a better establishment that know how to make mash next time
Thanks but no thanks Toby

Have just had the most awful carvery. Beef gristly, fatty, the meat was carved very finely couldn’t have carved it any thinner. Waited in the queue for 10 minutes whilst waiting for more turkey to come out. Roast potatoes were cremated and cold and the green beans had been cooked for too long. Overall meal was just awful. They even got the drinks order wrong and this was my mother’s birthday. Struggled to pay for drinks with cash as no cash in tills, and then to top it off was told 9.15 after buying another drink they were closing at 9.30. We did complain but had nothing taken off the bill so we paid as the young waitress was very nice and apologetic.
Will not be visiting this carvery again.

Myself and my partner visited a couple days ago and loved the carvery itself, but found the way the restaurant operated to be very long winded and not very efficient at all. Our table was booked at 7, and we arrived 10 minutes beforehand so we were directed to sit outside (which is completely fair). We were called in just after 7 and a lovely lady ran through their new system. She then said that we’d have to wait until she says it’s okay for us to get in the queue for the carvery. I expected this wait to be no longer than 5 minutes, but we waited 40 minutes before even getting in the queue for the carvery itself!! It’s so ridiculous I was tempted to leave after half an hour. What confuses me is this: why should you have customers mingling and walking around the restaurant when they don’t even plate their own food, they just watch the chefs plate it up for them. In my opinion, each customer should fill in a card ticking everything they want on their carvery and then they bring it out like a normal restaurant. This way it would be so much more efficient, and it’ll reduce the spread if people are sat at their table at all times rather than moving around. I also found it disappointing that the staff weren’t wearing masks, and there were no screens covering the food. These little changes would make such a difference!

Hello Emily
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review following a recent visit, our aim is for all guests to experience the ‘Home of the Roast’ home and clearly this time we’ve failed and the team and I are truly sorry.
During the course of your visit with us our kitchen experienced some technical difficulties, this halted the service of our guests being served for a period of time. During this time our already booked in reservations where arriving and hence caused a pinch point in service. Once serviced resumed we were unfortunately then delayed for the rest of service due to the tables already waiting and reservations for a fully booked day. Please accept our apologies as we can appreciate long delays can cause upset and discomfort to our guests.
At present masks or screens are not required under the government guidelines in restaurants, which is why they have not been installed. Across our brand we have a site trailing a deck screen and this is constantly under review by our brand and safety team to see if they are viable for the brand.
Kind Regards,
Toby Shenstone

We took the Govt offer and boy was it a bargain. £12.68 for 2 people carverys, ice creams and J20's all served hot or cold as appropriate with a smile.. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED we felt very safe with social distances there. but you need to book in advance

Booked a table for myself, my husband and our one year old. Taken to our table where we were told we would need to wait around 20-25 mins before we could join the carvery queue to get our food.
It actually took 50 mins for us to be allowed to join yet another queue to get our food. Which is then handled by another 3-4 people before you can eat.
The beef was either bone dry or 90% fat, practically inedible.
Ordered desserts as the restaurant was absolutely boiling, waited another 25 mins before cancelling the order and leaving as my one year old had given up the will to live sitting in there for almost 2 hours.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

Hello Niamh,
We are really disappointed that your visit with us yesterday was not up to the 'Home of the Roast' standards that we expect and strive for here at Shenstone
Due to unforeseen circumstances we had longer than expected delays in being able to invite our guests to the Carvery deck and we express our apologies
At present with the current restrictions our team do have to serve the meal for you and the bring this over to your table, with all team regularly washing and sanitizing their hands, this is under the guidelines of our current Covid risk assessment laid out to us
We really hope that in the future you will consider joining us again so that you can see that this visit is not our usual standard and that we can get it right
Kind Regards

I visited here with my two teenagers on Tuesday, first visit since lockdown so we were really looking forward to it. The food was lovely but the service wasn’t good.
The waitress told us we could go up to the queue for our carvery and after waiting there for ten minutes a man came over and told us we couldn’t have our carvery yet as there were people who were before us and asked us to return to our table. I told him that the waitress had told us we could join the queue and he repeated himself saying he would speak to the waitress. No apology and everyone was looking as us, we felt like naughty children which was really embarrassing.
The carvery serving was slow as there was just one woman the majority of the time left on her own trying to serve meat and all the extras and we felt quite sorry for her as she seemed quite stressed and it was a really hot day.
The carvery was lovely and we decided to have dessert. As the waitress gave us the dessert menus my son accidentally knocked a drink all over the table and she rushed off to get us some napkins to clean it up but she never came back! No napkins and the table was covered. She eventually came back ten minutes later and asked if we knew what dessert we wanted but we had decided to just pay and leave by this point.
We came away feeling a bit bemused and I think we will go somewhere else next time.

We booked on the Sunday morning to go to the carvery in the afternoon, we had to call to change the time to an earlier sitting and the staff were very accommodating. We were seated straight away by a very friendly waiter who detailed the process and introduced the waitress looking after the table,i believe her name was Dom, she was very attentive and took the time to acknowledge our 3 year old daughter who kept eying her. The food was excellent, everything was fresh and well stocked and just overall enjoyable. Despite being a busy Sunday the seating arrangements were also reasonable and we didn't feel on top of someone else's table. Really great experience and fab meal.

Was great this evening, seemed like not many in there but a pre covid Sunday was mental anyway.
Booked in advance, came 5 mins before booking and seen to my table, and ordered a drink. My friends (in my bubble) arrived and we ordered drinks and I ordered the mushroom and ale pie, and they the standard carvery. 5 mins later we went up to the carvery, waited in 2 metre distance for about 5 mins, I picked up my pie, got spuds and veg and gravy (all veggie) with a big yorkie, and the others got their meat and veg and sauces and gravies.
Penny was our waitress and she was great. She went up and got extra veg for one of our party, and as I was beaten by my dinner, a takeaway carton for me to put my own food into at the table to take home. Not classy I know, but it was a mushroom pie I wanted to taste again. And mash... and red cabbage ... and plenty more.
Anyway, excellent service, lovely staff, a chilled atmosphere, food like it always is, a bit addictive every couple of months... gorgeous and tasty, filling and comforting.
Thanks for making our first trip out to a restaurant calm and welcome back.

We visited this carvery for Sunday lunch. All seemed great. Booked a reservation 3pm. Got there, quite busy but table wasn't ready which happens some times. Had a drink at the bar & was shown to the table about 3:15. Then the weird & bit & something ive never ever experienced at any other carvery. We were told we would be called when it was our turn to go up & join the queue?? So we sat there watching the queue which i have to say was hardly moving, i can only imagine really slow service. Then after half an hour of waiting to be told in a carvery you can go up & queue for food we asked the same person who seated us (not a waitress, looked like supervisor as not in uniform) any idea when we might actually be able to join the queue. She said shed find out………never came back!! So after 45 minutes of sitting at a table in a carvery & not actually being able to even get up & get one we just left. Total waste of time & the most backward system I've seen in a carvery. Wouldn't go again even if it was free, i haven't got enough time!!

Good Morning
Firstly thank you for your honest feedback regarding your recent visit with us.
So as you can fully appreciate Sunday is one of our busiest days here at Toby Shenstone and given the current climate with Covid still playing a big part of society it’s our choosing to keep our guests our priority and maintain their safety through out their visit with us. This is why on a Sunday we run a virtual que to go up to the Carvery deck and obtain your food, if we did not carry our service in this manner the que with guests would reach round into the main bar area and extend further!
The ‘slow’ service is not down to the Carvery but the guests that are already in the Carvery waiting area, we unfortunately do not have the capability of rushing our guests through the self serve area after being carved their meat.
This impacts on the next tables waiting to go up to get their meals.
We apologise if you felt like it was a long wait over all we had 20-30 mins wait for the tables to go up which is a normal waiting time on our busiest day of the week.
The safety of our guests plays a key part here at Shenstone and we like to feel that over loading a waiting area where our guests would feel uncomfortable is something we prefer not to do. This is why we explain to all our guests that we will return to the table when it is their turn.
Have a great day

What used to be a great venue is now on our no go list. Despite not being anywhere near as busy as pre-lockdown there was a long wait to be shown to our booked table. The food on the carvery was burnt literally to a crisp, inedible. The waitress apologised and could plainly see the food was disgusting, and the manager without hesitation, brought out freshly cooked food albeit after a fifteen minute wait never charged for one meal and free dessert for the children. Shame but never again this eatery is off our list.

Been to a few places since August to eat and this place was the worst for Covid measures.
I even heard a gentleman complain as a group had been sat too close to him and was told the tables only had to be over a metre apart if face to face. I had a look and the people were really close to his table. I would have complained as well.
The food was ok but carvery very slow, the servers kept going to the kitchen to replace food. Needed someone in kitchen to bring it out as the queue just stopped for 10 mins.
Not very happy that there is no sneeze guard over the food as people chat in the queue and one man sneezed and particles could have got into the food! This is not at all Covid secure is it if people’s snot and saliva can be transferred on to the food?
Wasn’t happy that initial drinks brought out and told to take off tray yet subsequent drinks were carried to the table one at a time not on a tray? What is the point of asking to take the first drinks off the tray then?
Stupid inconsistant rule.
Won’t be coming back here that’s for certain.
Did not feel safe one bit although the anti mask brigade probably will feel fine.
