The Farmhouse is situated in one of those lesser-known towns in the E. Cape, but that doesn't take away from the great experience we've had here. My husband and I pass by there whenever we travel between Gauteng and Gqeberha and the upgrade to the farmhouse has made it even better. They have great cappuccinos, farm stall goodies like rusks & toffees and have a light meal menu too but what makes this place a gem is the friendliness from the staff. One can simply order whatever they'd like, and soak in the sun on the veranda while the townsfolk pass by with a smile. Beautiful spot indeed!

The route from Gauteng to Port Elizabeth is shorter, quieter and more scenic if one diverts over the Gariep Dam wall, through Steynsberg and take the R 390 to Hofmeyr and Cradock where you get back onto the N 10 to Port Elizabeth. As you enter Hofmeyr you will see The Farmhouse (intersection of R390 and R401). Owners David and Lynette Lord have gone to great lengths to make this establishment the proverbial "oasis in the desert". Beautifully furnished and decorated with a peaceful ambiance. One is welcomed by the fantastic staff whose attention to detail and service is world class. The menu is not "unlimited" but the food is all prepared from local farm produce and is well cooked and prepared. An added bonus is the in-shop boutique selling produce as well as art and craft gifts and nic-nacs. The rest rooms are beautifully clean and well serviced. Well worth the stop for a refreshing meal and coffee.

Cosy but spacious coffee shop/farm stall with great food and excellent friendly service. Prices are very reasonable, service is very quick. Roosterkoek was fresh and warm. Shop sells local condiments, biscuits etc. Great find.

If you order food make sure to confirm that they will actually make it. We ordered a toasted sandwich and sat waiting for it for about 20 minutes. They eventually asked us if we were waiting for something and told us they never made it. There were no other customers in the shop so not sure how they forgot us.

An oasis in the Karoo, it's just got better each time I stop over. Value for money and quality of food and the shop is exceptional.

A gem in the middle of nowhere! You MUST stop in at The Farmhouse in Hofmeyer! Such friendly service, delicious breakfast, very reasonably priced, modern, clean and a quaint variety of local goods for sale in the shop too. We highly recommend.

We stopped here en route from PE to Ladybrand. Have always wanted to but times were always out. So happy we could this time. So impressed . We had toasted sandwiches and a superb americano that outs many coffee shops back home in Durban to shame. Well done and thank you. Service and food excellent

Next time you're travelling from Gauteng to the Eastern Cape (between Gariep dam and Cradock) - I urge you to stop over for a coffee break and a bite to eat at Hofmeyr The Farmhouse . The owner is a prominent local sheep farmer (David Lord). David and his wife, Lynette bought the coffee shop during the 2020 lockdown - which was destined to be sold on auction and in doing so made a massive contribution to the upkeep of Hofmeyr's main street and the town itself. The coffee shop has been beautifully renovated offering a typical Karoo style menu, excellent coffee and an assortment of gifts. The hospitality of David and Lynette is extraordinary, you will have to pop in to experience it. A couple of weeks ago (on Easter Monday), we made an unplanned stop-over in Hofmeyr while on route to St Francis. I realised that there was something wrong with our trailer and I pulled up outside the Farmhouse coffee shop to take a look just as David Lord (owner) was parking his bakkie. He wasted no time in coming over to me – diagnosed the problem as a “buggered bearing” and invited my family (and dogs) into the coffee shop while he sorted it out. He made a few phone calls and within half-an-hour three or four farmers had arrived, some with their own trailers, some with spare wheel bearings – all with the most amazing “good samaritan” attitude. After a while, the farmers decided that they didn’t have the correct spare part with them, and concluded that the best thing to do was for me to use one of their trailers for the rest of our holiday, and to leave my trailer with them in Hofmeyr – which they would repair while I was gone. Thank you Barend Opperman for the loan of your trailer for two weeks. Thank you also to local farmers Gerald Fletcher (from Tafelkop farm) and Albert Van Heerden (from Van Vuurenshoek boerdery) who didn’t hesitate to come to our rescue. What an amazing gesture of generosity and kindness by these gentlemen. The world is full of good people – you just have to go and find them – and the Karoo is a great place to start.
