Drakensberg trout - best ever. A country home meal rather than a restaurant. We loved our drive , meal , history lesson and low key friendly environment.

Revisited after many years and we were not disappointed. Lovely country setting - on a verandah overlooking the garden. So peaceful. The food was really delicious and the cassata was just the best. Definitely planning a return visit.

we had the most wonderful meal with our family - it is an owner run business and the service was amazing - the food was amazing (even had yummy vegetarian meal) Totally Covid 19 friendly as we sat outside on the patio - with plenty...of space between tables - Val was a delight and Roy is an amazing chef! The gardens are just beautiful and well worth taking a walk around. Situated in the tiny little village of Fort Nottingham it has to be the best kept secret in the Midlands. Please be sure to book ahead of time as this is not a drop in kind of place - no kids and no dogs (which is fair enough as this is Rob and Vals home) Highly recommended!!!More

Fantastic restaurant owned and run by owner who has a passion for food at owners' house. Only a few tables ensures the best service. Not licensed.

Roy Tabernor is a brilliant chef and a wine connoisseur. I have been visiting his restaurant first in Pietermaritzburg and thereafter in its present situation for more than 40 years and I keep on going back. The restaurant is in a beautiful setting, the food...is excellent the ambiance is excellent and it is well worth doing the attractive drive through the Midlands Meander.More

Roy and Val have been serving their delectable meals for decades and they never fail to impress with their mouthwatering dishes. Lovely outdoor setting watching many different birds flitting by.

I was an avid supporter of Els Amics when it was open in Pietermaritzburg, if I am not mistaken for about 27 years until Chef, Roy Tabernor retired to Fort Nottingham. The restaurant is about 45 minutes from PMB now and well worth the few...kms from Nottingham Rd on the Fort Nottingham Rd, and is only open for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays, or any other time by arrangement for groups of 8 or more. We dropped in on Sunday to be greeted by maitre d Val. The small restaurant was full with patrons obviously enjoying their food. The menu is small compared to the "old Els Amics", a choice of three starters, three mains and three desserts. I order the Duck a L'Orange which was always my favourite and it didn't disappoint and my partner order a Balmoral Fillet Steak (whisky and parmesan sauce) done to perfection. The Crème Brulee was the real thing and judging from the mmmmms from the table next door the bread and butter pudding was great. The trout and duck both are locally sourced. The menu changes weekly and if you pre-arrange Roy will put your choice on the menu that week. Els Amics doesn't have a liquor licence so don't forget the bring your own. All in all a wonderful afternoon's outing in a great garden setting.More
