My partner and I visited Green Gables after Nicolaas (Old Village Lodge) highly recommended it. Apparently it was a relaxed, cosy restaurant with a homey atmosphere and friendly owner/staff. Our expectations were met, and exceeded, in every way.
Green Gables is indeed not a fancy,...stiff-upper-lip affair, but rather one of the warmest, most beautifully cluttered restaurants I have ever come across. The Green Gables website mentions the fact that it is "food cooked with love" and an "experience... not easily repeated elsewhere". I'm quoting, because I couldn't put it better.
Jill, the owner and host, is warm, kind and attentive, as was our waitress Sharon. Jill apologised profusely for the lack of live piano music on the night we went to her establishment, but we were both nevertheless in love with the little restaurant. From the wood floors, high ceilings, fairy lights, organised clutter, right to the friendly service, gorgeous soul food and the ridiculously affordable prices. A three course meal for two, including coffee and wine, set us back only R360.00! Needless to say, we added a large tip ;)
Green Gables has a set menu with two choices for mains and about the same for dessert. The starter was a beautiful butternut soup, followed by a choice of a pork main or chicken main. I went for the former, which included perfectly roasted pork leg and pork stomach plus roast potatoes, a pumpkin fritter, roast veggies etc. My partner chose the latter option, which included the same sides. We both loved our selection, but let me tell you; don't be put off by the thought of "pork stomach"... it is a decidedly delicious dish!
I honestly cannot wait to visit the Green Gables Dining Room in McGregor again. Thank you Jill, Sharon and team - our dining experience was everything we wished for. And moreMore
