Had supper here on Friday the 7th of June. Very cosy and warm establishment. Owner comes and sits with you with a drink and enjoys a conversation. Very friendly and accommodating. The menu for the evening consisted of - Cauliflower and Blue Cheese soup (Incredible)...Pork Belly with green beans and baby potatoes Cheese cake A wonderful red wine and a few beers and the cold weather didnt matter any longer.More

Jill was such a lovely person who made us welcome. Never have we been anywhere so very relaxed if a bit idyosincratic, quite an experience in every way but not to be missed. The views from the terrace are beautiful. The table was set with...cutlery etc just like the 70s in U.K., but very special and carefully presented. The food was good but also had shades of the 70 s too. However do go for the experience as it's very special and most unusual. We may even like the pianist and the singing dog, just ' go with the flow' and relax.More

If you are in McGregor and you have the time to stop at this restaurant, please do not miss this experience. You will need to make a booking or call before you go as the restaurant is not always open. Information about the opening times...is available for the tourism office as well. This was an old home that is set-up as a restaurant and enjoy the feeling of having your private spot and having a wonderful meal. You might even meet some of the local people that love McGregor and have lots of good stories to tellMore

Green Gables was recommended to us by Annette at Tanagra where we were staying. We were a party of 7 and had a splendid home cooked style traditional Christmas lunch under the trees in the garden. The lunch was great value for money.

Evening meals offered on Fridays and Saturdays. Always the same, either lamb shank or fish and chips, and bring your own wine. Service chaotic and sometimes the food runs out and people who have booked find they arrive to be told the kitchen is empty....Not a satisfactory situation.More

My partner and I visited Green Gables after Nicolaas (Old Village Lodge) highly recommended it. Apparently it was a relaxed, cosy restaurant with a homey atmosphere and friendly owner/staff. Our expectations were met, and exceeded, in every way. Green Gables is indeed not a fancy,...stiff-upper-lip affair, but rather one of the warmest, most beautifully cluttered restaurants I have ever come across. The Green Gables website mentions the fact that it is "food cooked with love" and an "experience... not easily repeated elsewhere". I'm quoting, because I couldn't put it better. Jill, the owner and host, is warm, kind and attentive, as was our waitress Sharon. Jill apologised profusely for the lack of live piano music on the night we went to her establishment, but we were both nevertheless in love with the little restaurant. From the wood floors, high ceilings, fairy lights, organised clutter, right to the friendly service, gorgeous soul food and the ridiculously affordable prices. A three course meal for two, including coffee and wine, set us back only R360.00! Needless to say, we added a large tip ;) Green Gables has a set menu with two choices for mains and about the same for dessert. The starter was a beautiful butternut soup, followed by a choice of a pork main or chicken main. I went for the former, which included perfectly roasted pork leg and pork stomach plus roast potatoes, a pumpkin fritter, roast veggies etc. My partner chose the latter option, which included the same sides. We both loved our selection, but let me tell you; don't be put off by the thought of "pork stomach"... it is a decidedly delicious dish! I honestly cannot wait to visit the Green Gables Dining Room in McGregor again. Thank you Jill, Sharon and team - our dining experience was everything we wished for. And moreMore

Felt like home...cosy and very laid back! The food is nice, balanced and well presented. My mom appreciate me eating here...because that's the kind of food my mom would make.
