What a fantastic Sunday Lunch. Didn’t book a table until 22:30 on the Saturday night before. They happily took my booking. Had a lovely pint of Harvey’s bitter and a bottle of Dry Rose for the ladies. Very helpful and efficient young waitresses took our order and delivered our food. The plate looked delicious, with the Yorkshire pudding topping off the beef, parsnips, cabbage and outstanding roast potatoes. A side of cheesey leeks then arrived. The gravy brought the whole meal together. Capped it off with Apple Crumble and Custard for pudding. Without doubt one of the best roast dinners I’ve had for years. If I visit our friends in Bexhill again, we will take the short drive out to Hooe, no problem. Very competitive pricing as well.

REALLY enjoyed our meals but cannot believe we didn't take pictures of our actual food lol. Honey boy had the pork medallions and I had the fish and chips - as a former chippy owner I must say the batter was on point! Atmosphere is lovely, staff is lovely. My ONLY criticism would be that there's hand sanitizers in pump bottles on the tables - which look like possibly olive oil or balsamic lol so I wonder how many people have inadvertently pumped hand sanitizer in their food lol lol. But honestly one of the nicest pubs we've been to, the sticky toffee pudding was fantastic and we will definitely go back - highly recommend a visit :)

Myself and my husband use to come here years ago when two women ran the pub and it was really good. Re visited the pub yesterday for lunch and nothing much had changed apart from the owners. We both had cod and chips , absolutely delicious, piping hot and nice to see the fish was fresh not frozen. The batter on the fish was crispy and not greasy and well cooked chips. I had a dessert but asked for a small portion as I was so full, really yummy. Nice helpful staff. Will definitely be our place to eat in future although it is a lot further than The Denbigh for us . But well worth the extra couple of miles .

Sad to write this, we were over the moon with the first couple of visits. But tonight we were shocked to be surrounded by dogs. Not that we don't love dogs, we do! However - I have a severe allergy, and of the five tables tonight three had large dogs - literally surrounding us. I started to break out right after we got there so my guess is that this must happen often and I'm guessing as well that they don't wash down the floors, pillow cushions and seats every night - which make it super inhospitable for anyone with allergies. Dog fur is highly air borne, so then of course we had to wonder about the sanitation. A food allergy is easier because you can say I can't have peanuts/rice or whatever it is - but one honestly wouldn't expect to be surrounded by large barking dogs in a restaurant. And my allergies I would say are really only moderate, yet kicked off pretty much immediately. So obviously there's a lot of dogs in attendance as a norm. And one was aggressive so we had to listen to the palaver several times. One dog was even under our table looking for scraps while it's owners paid no attention. We can't go back obviously because for a 70+£ bill for two people, you want to be able to sit and enjoy your food without using your cutlery to scratch the welts from the hives. Really sad that the restaurant isn't available to everyone, just a few locals with large dogs. Surprising in 2024.

We went there for a family dinner, having made a table reservation earlier that day. The pub is full of rustic charm, with a decent menu, offering a number of dishes, both typical pub fare and others somewhat more sophisticated. The service was friendly and the food really quite good. However, for the more clinical eye, you quickly understand that the pub (especially the toilets) need some serious TLC to be able to attract the more discerning diner. Overall, a good experience, but not inexpensive by any stretch of the imagination. We're talking over 40 pounds per person with wines.

Thank you very much for your kind review. I’m glad you had a nice time. As regards to your comment on our toilets . We have had a major damp problem with the damp winter we have just had . The walls are being treated.so at the moment we are unable to rectify the problem until it has dried. This is the downside of running a 15th century country pub.

I had a gorgeous 2 course meal here with my friend a few nights ago, the staff were really attentive & assisted my friend with her menu choices as she has a gluten intolerance & the staff couldn’t have been more lovely & helpful. Great atmosphere & one of the best pub dishes I’ve had in a very long time. Will certainly be returning.

The family enjoyed lunch in the sunny back garden of this public house. We had first class service; the waiters were all very helpful and they wanted to make sure we enjoyed our eating experience. We all had different main courses and all the dishes came together, although we were warned that the pizza may come a little later. One had fish and chips, which he said was delicious. The father had the scallops, which were delicious and I had the roast pork and the crackling was the best I had ever tasted. I had asked for a smaller portion, which they took note and the meal was delicious. Three of us had desserts; they were all delicious. Brownie, Sticky Toffee pudding and the cheesecake were all delicious. Fully recommend this establishment.

I cannot rate this country pub more highly. We went in for lunch. My sister had the ham, eggs and chips; the ham was a delicious piece of ham of good quality, and the eggs and chips were great. I had the beetroot and red onion tart and the waitress asked me whether I would like a goats cheese topping, which was so tasty, along with the sautéed new potatoes and a very nice salad with a traditional French dressing. For dessert, my sister and I shared a brownie; we were asked by the very helpful waitress would we like it with cream or custard. We had the double cream, which came in a very nice jug. This was so delicious. This pub is very quaint and old, so has lots of character. The Publican, Leigh, Mike, the Chef and staff were great. A very happy experience and we would not hesitate to return. Thank you! Couldn’t fault it at all.

We called by this place after visiting the observatory nearby. The service was friendly and relaxed and the food was superb! We enjoyed the burger, kofta kebab, fish n chips and the pork chops. The chips were triple cooked, the mash was perfect, the burger just right and the fish batter crispy and light. I can see perfectly now why there are so many excellent ratings for this great place!!

Our family of 14 enjoyed a fabulous meal yesterday - everything was perfect and we cannot thank you the owners and staff for looking after us so well. The roast dinners are the best I have ever had when eating out. More gravy, extra potatoes were provided. The desserts are wonderful and all home made. Excellent value. We were in the function room and it was so lovely with the open fire and decorations. There was Christmas music supplied by an iPod and speaker. Nothing was too much trouble and we will be returning very soon. Thank you again 😀

It's a pretty little old traditional english pub and we had a lovely dinner here last night. The foccacia was delightful and my venison bourgingon was delicious, as was my wife's fish. I greedily chose a fruit crumble which I didn't really need as I was full already but, again delicious! We thought the prices reasonable for the quality of the food. Staff were lovely too.

We've just been here for Sunday lunch. Everything about it was superb. Very efficient, quick (despite being very busy) and friendly service, and the best Sunday pub roast we've had in a long time (the roast chicken was perfectly cooked and full of flavour, and it was served with masses of vegetables, all again immaculately cooked). And the crumble and custard was to die for! We cannot recommend the Red Lion too highly. Well done everyone concerned.

I have to say the food was so tasty, I can fully recommend the roast lamb. The service was excellent, the waitress Tracy went beyond the cause at times during the evening. Very helpful and attentive. What an asset don’t let her go. Thanks for a lovely evening once again.

Visited four times whilst staying in nearby Ninfield for a week, twice was just for drinks, once was for Sunday lunch and the other time for lunch. Received a friendly welcome when we stopped in for a drink on our first day in the area which was Saturday and because of this and the reviews previously seen online we decided to book for Sunday lunch for the two of us. Again a great welcome and social distancing etc not a problem at all. I ordered the shellfish linguine and my husband chose roast beef, both meals were generously portioned and both delicious. Puddings were an Apple and blackberry crumble with custard for me and a. Chocolate brownie with ice cream for hubby. The star of the show was for me the crumble. I’m not usually much of a dessert type person but this was lovely with a deep crumbly topping which was crunchy all the way through. What was really nice is that when we visited on the two subsequent occasions we were recognised and greeted warmly. Would heartily recommend that you visit if your in the area. We certainly will next time we’ re there

Unfortunately I had a meal there last night. Today I am rather unwell. The breaded king prawns were not fully cooked inside. In fact the prawns themselves were tasteless. Today I'm stuck indoors and dare not go out at all for obvious reasons (need of loo every half hour or so).
