My wife and I enjoyed three meals at the Rose & Crown over the Christmas period - a group meal for our Rotary group following an evening of charity "sleighing" around the village, a meal for 3, and a family gathering of 8. All were consistently excellent, with prompt and attentive service, delicious and generous variety of food, all complimented by a relaxed atmosphere, and good wine and beer. The Rose & Crown must now rank with the best pub/restaurants in the South Hams. Congratulations to Manager Tom for raising the bar.

I am probably one of the most difficult customers to please ever - Not only am I incredibly fussy with food but I work in the industry. I know the standard of service expected, and I'm therefore super critical of anywhere I visit...
The service was excellent from start to finish, very friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. We had a young 15 month old toddler with us as well who just wanted to walk around and explore.
Staff were very patient with her and made us all feel welcome - even the customers in the restaurant were all so friendly and very eager to have a chat with our little one!
Not only was the service faultless but the food was to die for. Perfectly cooked, presented beautifully and tasted amazing. Our table of 3 enjoyed a chicken baguette, Pork Belly and the chef's special of Dover Sole... Perfect!
We possibly waited slightly longer than expected for the food to arrive but it was well worth the wait, and we weren't in a rush. Can't wait to return, thank you to the whole team!

Came here for lunch with a friend and was very pleased with the service. They have well established social distancing procedures that made us feel very safe, and the reduced menu still had a good range so there's something for everyone. Food came in a timely manner and was very delicious. Can't fault the staff who made us feel very welcome, will be back again!

We asked for water with our drinks, they forgot. Then after 45 mins wait our desserts arrived before our mains. Another 10 mins wait and mains arrived and my wifes burger was raw, waitress was so embarrassed because it literally looked like a bloody carcass on the plate. We didn't ask to complain at all but they refunded our mains which was cool. My sticky toffee pudding was one of those microwave and flip over things from a round plastic container (that I can get from a supermarket for 50p) and not made in house plus the ice cream was cheap, was terrible - this doesn't sit well with me because they offer a home made one during non 'eat out to help out times'. Menu was a bit lacking as well, felt a bit like they were taking the mick out of the eat out to help out scheme by offering low quality food but charging high prices. This place used to be so much better. I will say the staff were very friendly which made things more pleasant

After a recommendation from my mother in law for a roast/carvery we expected an excellent meal and experience. The nut roast which my husband and I wanted wasn’t available, when we were told by the first waitress it was on the menu. We waited 50 minutes for the main. Not ideal when we were pretty hungry and with a 5 year old. Mine wasn’t hot and didn’t have much flavour. It needed to have a gravy with it but the there wasn’t any vegetarian gravy. Three of the other people on our table had part of their meal not hot. My son’s “child-portion” fish and chips was an adult size. I checked with the waitress who said it was a child’s meal. The size of the battered fish was huge! For the dessert we had another wait: 20 minutes. There should have been more than two waitresses serving. My husband’s crumble was warm, not hot again. My mother in law asked for vanilla ice cream but they’d run out. What restaurant runs out of vanilla ice cream?! It seems that maybe they were having a bad evening but I wouldn’t expect that of an award winning restaurant. We won’t be going back.

Living very close to the Rosie we have been regular visitors until very recently. We were rarely disappointed and really enjoyed our Sunday lunch.
However, having decided to go for an early dinner we were looking forward to a roast. Sadly we were very disappointed, my meat was so rare it was hardly cooked at all, no care had been taken with the carrots which were whole and rock hard, there were no parsnips. The biggest disappointment however were the potatoes, they were completely dried out and had clearly been hanging around for some time as well as being badly prepared. We asked for an extra Yorkshire pudding for which we were charged an additional 50p.
The fun really started when it came to desserts - I had two goes at ordering both of which were mysteriously unavailable, if I had wanted the cheesecake then parts of that dessert were not available. Two of us gave up altogether, the two desserts that did arrive were tasty and nicely presented.
The service was friendly if rather slow.
After bringing these issues to the attention of the manager we were compensated. However, if this poor level of cooking continues customers will melt away. Whatever the problem is, and there clearly is a kitchen issue, it needs to be sorted ASAP. Loyal customers and occasional diners deserve and expect value for money and an enjoyable dining experience.

This used to be our favourite pub to come for a meal but it has recently gone downhill. The pub was busy and we were placed in a side room and got forgotten. We had to go to find a member of staff numerous times to take our order and request cutlery, order extra drinks and ask for the bill. The room had damp patches on the ceiling and had dead flowers in a dirty vase on a dusty windowsill. The service was like something out of Fawlty Towers. I had fish and chips and the batter was brown and almost burnt. I sent an email to the Rose and Crown to let them know how bad our experience was and I did not get a reply to thank me for the feedback or to apologise. Never again.

Having been here about 2/3 years ago, we thought we’d return as we have enjoyed the food previously. It was good but not up to the standard that we have previously encountered. The price does not reflect the quality and we all felt we could pay similar elsewhere for a much higher standard of meal.
For dessert, we just wanted coffees. One of the group wanted dairy free to which they said they’d run out of (it’s 2020- you need to have dairy free options always!)
So then a half pint of Diet Coke was ordered whilst the rest had coffees. 10 minutes later still no sign of the Coke. Had to ask someone else for it. It then got made and left on the side (we were watching it at the bar) so then we had to ask the waiter who kept walking past it if we could have it. When it was brought over it turned out to be a pint of regular coke.
Just little things like this have meant we won’t be making a return visit.

As often the case when gastro pubs get brought up by big breweries, standards drop and the Rose and Crown is no exception to this.
Understaffed which meant we waited 45mn for our mains, poor quality of food (my mushroom linguini was drowned in olive oil) which left me feeling a bit sick.
Chasing profit margins automatically mean that there is is a drop in quality and standards.
Shame as this used to be one of the Best pubs in the area.

We booked a table for our family at 5.30pm on a Sunday. They had no roast dinners left and hardly anything else available on the menu. Service was REALLY slow - we had to ask them to take our food order and there was hardly anyone else in there! Portions were extremely small and we went home still hungry despite the meal for 3 of us costing over ÂŁ60 (and I just had a starter and chips because nothing else I wanted was available!). The Rose and Crown has really gone downhill which is such a shame.

After visiting the pub for over ten years, we were very disappointed on our first visit since “freedom day”. We asked to have a few drinks but we were told the pub was fully booked by a young man at the door. There were several tables clearly free. I challenged this and was told the bookings were for 7:30. It was 7:40 so I asked if we could stand at the bar. We were told we would have to sit outside in the cold.
I asked again if there was a table for 2 and miraculously there was a spare table for 2 which he seemed reluctant to give us.
I asked the waitress what lagers were now being served and was told Korev and Carlsberg. I asked why San Miguel was not being served and got a rather blunt reply saying it’s always been served here.
It hasn’t been.
I was disappointed in the reluctance to serve long standing custodians and really miss the old management.
The only saving grace was Carl the barman who was welcoming, personable and polite as always. The rest of the staff should learn from him.
I hope our next visit won’t be our last.

Hi 146mattw
Thank you for your feedback from your recent visit, I'm sorry to hear it wasn't up to standards.
We currently hold a table for 20 minutes after the time it is booked before allowing the table to be freed so I am sorry that you were unable to be seated straight away but this is stated in our booking confirmation so we like to stick to this where possible. Currently as a company we are still keeping certain covid rules in place for a little while longer so that we can protect our staff where possible, which is why we are not allowing people to stand at the bar at the moment - I'm sorry that you were asked to wait outside.
As for the beers we have not served San Miguel on draught for some time now but we are awaiting installation of Birra Moretti in the not so distant future to be served alongside our current draught of Korev and Carlsberg.
Thank you for your comments about Karl - he is an asset to our team and I will pass your comments on to him. Having recently taken over I do appreciate the feedback that we receive and will be using it to improve the experience we give to our customers.
Apologies once again that you were disappointed with your visit, if you would like to discuss it further please don't hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards
Vikki

Have been coming to this pub for years and it's always been very nice. However, went for a meal here on Saturday and it was a complete shambles. Firstly, they couldnt find our booking, so they put us on a table in the bar area which was really noisy and the waiter asked if we had track and trace, said I will be back in a second, and we never saw him again! We sat there for 20 minutes or so until I called a waitress over who was very nice and very apologetic and took our order. We all had fish and chips (we went with another couple), when it came the fish looked as if it was warmed up and the tartare sauce didnt taste like tartare sauce at all. That night both my husband and I sat up half the night with terrific indigestion and next day, spoke to our friends who said they too suffered all night!!! I dont know what's gone wrong but definitely gone down hill and the price was ridiculous.

I am baffled by the rose and crown 3rd time been in 9months as I live in the village. I feel I have to write a review as 3rd time we have sent food back. Roast dinner 7:30 pm. Told when we sent it back "quality goes off at this time maybe we should not of sent it out" Cold then reheated in microwave! swimming in bisto at best gravy, nut Roast was odd beans in a strange almost curry type flavour. Veg was insipid and like and old school nursing home for ÂŁ16. It is no more than a buffet meal in a chain carvery but has pretensions to be I am not sure what. Very much lost its way. Lazy St Austell brewery don't get complacent you have spoiled a once loved pub that rightly had a reputation fir good food and friendly atmosphere. Inexperienced team not to blame needs direction.

Popped in with my mother for lunch. After asking at the bar, a young man took us out side to a table in the courtyard and said he'd be back in a minute with track and trace and the menus.
Never saw anyone again. After 20 minutes we gave up and left.
There was 3 members of staff we could see front of house and only two tables inside with customers and one outside.
Terrible service.
Actually we did the one of staff again. He was outside chatting to some friends in the car park, but didn't venture towards his customers.
The other table sat outside said their food took ages and they'd finished it over 30 minutes ago but the empty plates still littered the table.
We used to love this pub but it's just not worth the hassle any more.

Being local and enjoying the Rosie since it was revamped by John Steven, and loving it in the Simon Warner/Laur Gales days, it's always been the natural choice for family celebs. It's had some ups and downs since StAustell got involved, but the place is seriously 'wrong' now. During our visit, a lot of the dishes were 'off'.. this was disclosed whilst we were ordering! Some of the dishes turned up with missing ingredients and when mentioned, were delivered half way through our meals. A couple of our meals contained poorly and undercooked ingredients and the food as a whole was not great; we won't be returning until we hear that things have changed. This used to be a great local, famous for it's food; I hope the management can 'root cause' the obvious problems and get standards back again.
