Unbelievably many bamboos, tall and thick.
Took the JR train from Kyoto to the Bamboo Forest. Many people, but tall beautiful bamboos. Thick trunks in green, brown and light colors. Very impressive to walk around in. Quite adventure-like. Regards, An & Ni

    Worthwhile
The place looks like the photos but with a lot more people. We visited around 11:00 and there were a lot of people on the short trail. The bamboo was very impressive. The walk takes about 15-20 minutes. We went to the Tenryuji Temple first which is next door to the forest if you leave the temple from the right side in the back.

    A scenic place
This is a nice place with a few eateries such as chavaty that sells nice scones but needs booking. Nearby is bamboo forest and also street food kiosks. Parking is available, per day charge, or via train.

Arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds
My wife and I visited Arashiyama our last day. We arrived early (6:45 am) and had the Bamboo forests to ourselves. Trains run early in the morning so if you want to experience this without the crowds, it is best to leave early.

Worth it to go, but underwhelming. If you miss it, thats OK
OK this is a must visit, but we were not impressed. I know that sounds counter to itself, but I'm glad we went. But it was one of those experiences of "OK we came, we saw, where to next?" It was just underwhelming, but worth it to go see. I mean where else can you see a forest of bamboo?

    Cool place really crowded
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest - The view is breathtaking. You walk through several paths lined with bamboo to reach a majestic temple with a fantastic view. It's a great experience, but it was quite cold, and there were a lot of people. I'd recommend going with a guide (I went without one) but relied on a YouTube video to guide me. However, I would recommend a guide since the temples are fascinating and have a lot of history.

5 - 6 hours or more to explore this
There is no entrance fee and there’s lots to do here and it’s totally worth the visit. What a beautiful view from Togetsukyo Bridge. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is another one of Kyoto's top sightseeing, plenty of walking and Ricksaw option is available but it's very costly. I will suggest to give atleast 5 - 6 hours or more to explore this beautiful place. Plenty of food options available.

    Plus/minus
The bamboo forest is probably not the best thing with this place cause its more like a walk along the path with some million other visitors that mostly turns around at the end of the forest. Keep going to the left and you will reach a vantage point that will make it well worth the extra steps. when you come down to the main street there are shops, restaurants in abundance so you will not be alone

    Bamboo forest go there independently
Visit to the Bamboo Forest, we did it independently by taking a train from Kioto for 3 euros return. In truth, apart from the usual very beautiful temples scattered in a large park, there isn't much else. Outside, however, there is a beautiful promenade full of people with lots of nice shops and restaurants up to a bridge over the river. I don't know how much it is worth taking a guided tour which is quite expensive.

Hot tip...visit after 5pm to miss the hordes
Our hot tip...visit after 4:30 or 5pm or later! We probably arrived after 5 pm. To our astonishment most of the day trippers and tourists had dispersed. It was serene, peaceful and our pictures were stunning! Without the hordes of tourists jostling for a photo op. The light was glorious, warm and very flattering. There was a light breeze and the rustling sound of the leaves was very spiritual! The bamboo much taller than I expected However, the bamboo grove was not what I expected. There was a large power-line running along the grove which was disappointing! FYI there are rickshaw carriages that transport tourists along a private section of bamboo grove that might be more encompassing? Is this a top tourist destination...YES but I do not understand the draw. I would have had no qualms to skip it!
