Verbier is not the most charming Swiss town; however, skiers will forgive the ugly architecture for slopes so superb that they attract world-class athletes. Each March welcomes the Xtreme Freeride Snowboarding Contest. Beginners will have a tough time finding suitable runs, but the wealth of red and black trails will entice advanced skiers. New gondolas are improving the waiting time. For those who seek even more thrills, try snowboarding, hang gliding, paragliding, heli- skiing and luging.

Overlooking the Rhone Valley, Nendaz boasts an incredible panorama of the Alps. As sunny as the French Riviera, Nendaz is perfect for a number of outdoor activities such as skiing (on 400 kilometers of slopes), winter and summer hiking, exploring the area's ancient waterways, or mountain biking. Located at the heart of the largest ski region in Switzerland, Nendaz has plenty of options for beginners and expert skiers alike, with its extraordinary itineraries and extremely varied ski runs.

On the Swiss Riviera, Vevey is perched between Mount Pélerin and Lake Geneva. Writers, artists and intellectuals have long been attracted to the village: Henry James's "Daisy Miller" is set here (you can still stay at the Hôtel des Trois Couronnes) and Charlie Chaplin made nearby Corsier his home. Today it's the headquarters for Nestlé, yet retains its old-world charm. To see for yourself, meander the alleys of Old Town, visit the fine art collection at the Musée Jenisch and shop at the weekly market.

Crans-Montana actually comprises two ski resorts, Crans-sur-Sierre and Montana- Vermala, although for all intents and purposes, they function as one. Popular with affluent Italians, the skiing is good (best for beginners and intermediates), but the shopping, eating and drinking are even better. The resort claims to be on the sunniest plateau in the Alps, and indeed the snow is often lacking, but the views over the Rhône are superb. Every September, the resort hosts the European Masters golf tournament.
