It's also called Ontario's shopping capital, with everything from shopping centres and outlet malls to picturesque village-style shopping streets.

The next time you're driving to Toronto or Niagara Falls, stop in Hamilton, where tourist traffic isn't quite so rampant. The Niagara Escarpment provides spectacular scenery, with beautiful trails and waterfalls. Visit nearby farms, orchards and vineyards, or plan your trip to coincide with Hamilton's lively fall fairs.

Whether you love sailing, touring wineries, or exploring Amish country, this picturesque region has something for everyone. In summer, Chautauqua County lures you with its five lakes including the Lake Erie shoreline, as well as dynamic arts and cultural programming at the Chautauqua Institution. Majorca has many beach towns, but if you like your sunny holiday served with a touch of history on the side, you should definitely consider Calvia. Homes and churches date from the 17th century (and earlier), and there are even the remains of a Roman villa.

Dubrovnik, in the extreme south of Croatia, is known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. A rich and powerful city state until 1806, the proud city once known as Ragusa has a population of over 120,000. Structural damage suffered during the siege of 1991 and 1992, at the hands of the Yugoslav People's Army, has been repaired and visitors once again flock to this tranquil city, nestled between the Adriatic and Dinaric Alps. A wealth of sites lies within the walls of the pedestrian-only Old Town.

Perhaps you're in town simply to catch a ferry to Sicily. If you can, though, try to take a later boat so you can explore Reggio di Calabria. The Lungomare road is a spectacular seaside walk. And the Bronzi di Riace, ancient Greek bronze statues discovered in the early 1970s, are worth seeking out at the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia.
