Katse Lodge is probably the best place to stay if you're visiting the Katse Dam in Lesotho, one of its main tourist attractions. Built mainly to house the contractors who worked on the construction of the dam, it's a sort of low common denominator Holiday Inn - a very quiet one when we were there - but the magnificent view of the dame and surroundings make up for it. Rooms are comfortable and clean... get one outside the main building for peace and quiet. When we were there, their credit card machine was down so take some cash with (about $80 per night). It's a good place to use as a base to explore the region with. It's a totally unspoilt area (save for the dam of course).

Our visit was October 2017 and we booked through Malealea Tours. They should be told to actually go and stay in the place and I am sure they would be as disappointed as our party were. In a nutshell THE LODGE IS FALLING APART!!! Ceilings collapsed/ing due to water damage, rivulets of water running down walls and at the fireplace in the lounge...water leaking from pipes outside as well....dining room chairs broken...our friends had to be given another room as the key to theirs was missing and there was no spare...when my husband arrived back from the afternoon dam wall tour and went to ask when the room was going to be serviced he was told they needed to get his key to get in as there was no spare and when he requested soap etc. he was told there was none available in Lesotho????
The tour was fantastic and the dam spectacular and the breakfasts served were very good......the rest is an absolute disaster and NOT worth the money they charge.

This as an above average hotel situated right on the edge of the stunning Katse Dam.

The rooms in the main hotel are a decent size but are looking a little tired and in need of a face lift. They are however clean and tidy and the beds are big and comfortable.

The lounge, private bar and restaurant are all fine. The staff were very friendly and attentive; they made us a wonderful log fire in the lounge where we sat in comfortable chairs and drunk decent SA wines at around R120 a bottle. They charged us corkage of R30 to bring in our own bottle of brandy, not bad at all.

Supper was above average, from a very comprehensive a-la-carte menu. Unfortunately there was no fresh trout available, despite a trout farm being located just up the road and the first page on the menu being devoted to trout dishes.

The charming hotel manager spent at least 15-minutes chatting at out table. He explained that there are local supply issue with respect to trout.

Noise from the exuberant kitchen staff was a trifle excessive, but added to the local charm :)

The early breakfast was excellent and extensive. Each individual's choice being correctly catered for; crispy bacon, soft eggs etc. being correctly delivered to each guest. Plenty of good coffee was served too.

Dear Sandy, Thank you very much for your kind words. We are a simple lodge in a very remote location and sometimes that makes it a little more difficult to provide the things that most people take for granted... That is why it really makes a difference to hear such positive feedback. Warmest regards, The Katse Lodge Team

I generally try to evaluate a place according to what I paid, i.e. value for money. Katse Lodge is not worth the more than ZAR 1000/night they charge for accommodation. The “lodge” has an old dormitory feel.

We stayed at the Katse village in one of the houses for one night. The houses are old and in desperate need of upgrading. I will not recommend staying over for more than one night, but even though the accomodation is not great, we were glad we planned to spend the night there for 2 reasons. It enabled us to take the tour of the dam wall. Defenitely worth it! The other reason is that we had dinner at the hotel. What a surprise! I can recommend their trout specialities. Delicious! Also make sure you take all supplies needed as shopping opportunities are basically non-existent. The beautiful scenery and quietness make a visit to the Katse dam a must.

Dear Sir/Madam, Thank you for your review. We appreciate the feedback and use it as a valuable tool to measure our performance. We are looking at upgrading chalets, however we recommend staying in the lodge rooms. The chef and restaurant staff will appreciate your compliments on your meal at the lodge restaurant. The view is magnificent for sure! But the camping area looks very improvised: there are no marked areas for campers, so everybody can just put themselves wherever they want. Toilet, shower, water taps and places for dish washing are located in "abandoned" block of the hotel close to the lawn area where people camp. It's a bit weird to see all these corridors and empty rooms but the toilets and showers were quite clean and hot water was working fine, so for a one night stay it was ok.

We decided on the spur-of-the-moment to go snow hunting in Lesotho. The plan was to just go for the day, but we found lots of snow and the scenery and mountain passes were just breathtaking. Before we knew it, we were at Katse Dam, which is quite deep into Lesotho. We were tired of the long drive and thought to stop for lunch at the Katse Lodge.

The lunch menu was basic light lunches, and we were famished. We asked the waitress if we could rather have some steak, and they produced the most delicious meal of steak, salad and chips. We also asked for cream for our coffee, and this too was no problem at all. There was free wifi in the reception and restaurant. The restaurant also overlooks the dam, it was spectacular.

Because of the great service and because the food was so great, we enquired about accommodation options for the night. They were a bit full, but we were delighted to be accommodated in one of their houses - a 2-bedroom 1-bathroom self-catering house which can accommodate up to 4 people at R1000 for the night. It has a lounge area with selected DSTV options and a generous self-catering kitchen, even stocked with biscuits.

It also had 3 air-cons which made the chilly nights comfortable (although the one in the lounge wasn't working).

The bathroom had a bath/shower combo and the water was steaming hot.

The bedrooms had quality percale linen and warm blankets and the pillows were fluffy.

For breakfast the next morning we opted for the buffet at R130 per person. The food was of good quality and the spread was full of variety. The eggs and bacon and sausages and starch meals were all hot and well prepared. Again we were served cream for our coffee. Nothing was too much for them to make our stay pleasant.

We will definitely return next year with the family and stay longer.

Thank you for your warm service!

Not good !
The accommodation is a result of the staff that was involved in the build of the dam. It was not changed since. I get that hostel feeling when in the empty hallways. Sounds echo where screaming children play inside.

The food, which was expensive for what was on offer, was inedible.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your honest review following your stay at Katse Lodge. We have taken your comments to heart and after discussing the matter with senior management we have looked thoroughly into the matter. Please understand that Lesotho is a distant location with very few establishments available and Katse Lodge used to be basic accommodation for engineers who worked at the dam. We have spent a lot of money to improve the Lodge and facilities for guests so a lot has changed since its former days. We urge you to please give us a chance to win back your business seeing that the December period is our most busiest thus most noisiest time of the year. We hope to see you again soon. Warm Regards Staff and Management Katse Lodge

We stayed for 1 night at the the Katse Lodge. The room was ok, very spacious with a large tv on the wall, but both the bedroom and bathroom were in need of updating. Katse dam is a beautiful area of the country and the dam tour interesting.

The rooms are spacious, but in need of an upgrade. It is fine for a night, but quite expensive for what you get. We had dinner in the restaurant and it tasted nice, but contained mainly canned vegetables, although there were also some fresh ones to be found on the plate.

We appreciated the service for an early breakfast.

I suspect because Orion Hotels has recently lost the contract run and manage the hotel this may be giving you problems. Try the Orion Hotels website as this still contains information or otherwise look for "katselodge" as one word and you will find the updated (2017) website. Good luck! Enjoy Sani Pass before it's tarred. Make sure you stop at the top for a drink at the highest pub in Africa.
