Experience fresh mountain air, a pristine environment and a nature lover's paradise. Nestled in a magnificent World Heritage Site at the foot of the Sani Pass, MKOMAZANA MOUNTAIN COTTAGES have been lovingly restored and are a part of an historic 1800's trading station. Surrounded by the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, the sprightly MKOMAZANA River and four dams on the property attract a multitude of birds and wildlife to enjoy. We are perfectly situated for a wide range of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking to bird watching and trout fishing. The cottages are beautifully appointed, each with its own character, private garden, and wood burning fireplace. Delicious freshly baked scones are delivered to your door each morning. Just the thing to make a beautiful mountain morning more memorable. Kick back and relax, or explore and discover. It's completely up to you. Experience MKOMAZANA, one of the Southern Drakensberg's best kept secrets.

Detailed Reviews
Staying at Mkomazana Mountain cottages was very special. As an original frontier trading post the sympathetically decorated cottage gave us a tranquil space to enjoy the stunning scenery. The walk to Salt and Pepper mountains, starts from the grounds and is well worth the effort. You feel like you are standing on top of the world, as layers of landscape unfold below you. Betty is a wonderful hostess and the hot scones in the morning are delicious.

This was a deviation from our usual family holidays which are at the coast of KZN. This was a refreshing change and one we wished we had done earlier. From the majesty of the mountains to being surrounded by the splendour of nature it gave us time to totally unwind and enjoy quality family time. In the quiteness and stillness of the location you can guarantee being able to just relax in totality. And there is plenty to keep you busy as well with the fishing and other activities. The professionalism and care extened to us by our beautiful host Betty and her team we are ever so grateful for and WOW those morning scones fresh out of the oven...Yuuuuummmy!
Will definitely go back for another holiday to Mokomazana. It is so worth it!!

What a gem of a place. There were 8 of us and we stayed in Coot and Stone cottage. Betty welcomed us on arrival and we quickly settled in. We lit the fires and quickly warmed up as the snow was blowing down from the pass. The cottages were warm and cosy at night, and our fresh hot scones in the morning were an absolute delight.
Great fun was had at Mike's bar where pool, tile tennis and card games entertained us all at night.
There is no connectivity for mobile phones, but there is brilliant WiFi available in the bar.
Definitely a great place to go if you are heading up Sani Pass for a day trip, or a picturesque ideal place to go just to get away from it all. Remember to take your fresh cream and strawberry jam for those morning scones!

We stayed in Rose cottage. Great bed, excellent kitchen, functioning bathroom with huge bath and loads of hot water, delightful armchairs and woodburning hearth which was essential for warming that large room. Clean and pretty. We loved it. The old Oregon pine floorboards create great atmosphere but watch your mug of coffee on the unsteady kitchen table when you sit down. Three recommendations to improve Rose Cottage: consider a wi-fi booster so that the signal from reception is surer; prune away as much as possible of the oak tree overhanging the north side of the cottage, to let in more sunlight and warmth and reduce the rain noise from falling dew on the roof at night; and then see whether the soft but irritating noise of what must be a distant water pump running intermittently at night can be dampened further; it kept us awake for long spells and is so out of keeping with the quietness that has to be the real drawcard of this place. Betty and her team are doing a wonderful job and we were well looked after. And Mike's tavern ("sports bar") adds a most unusual touch providing some social interaction for those guests that want it. For nature lovers the bird variety is great and you may see a reedbuck or otters on an early morning stroll.

We chose Mkomazana as it's the closest lodging to Sano Pass as we planned to do some birding. It was a perfect place, from the lodge surroundings we already saw our 2 missing species ( Drakensberg rockjumper and Drakensberg siskin ) on the afternoon we arrived. The walks in the neighborhood are fantastic, we enjoyed every minute, the chalet had all you need and every morning we were treated with fresh scones. The lady at reception ( sorry, but I did forget your name ) is going out of her way to help, thank you !!

The location is great for a city escape; surrounded by nature, mountains, lakes and not forgetting the water falls. The cottage is quite spacious and delicious scone by the door the next morning. Our kids loved it too

The setting is unbeatable. At the very foot of the Sani Pass with beautiful dams.
Sadly, our overnight started badly. We arrived to be told that our reservation had been cancelled for non payment when we had in fact paid. (Fortunately the accommodation was still available)
In the morning we were presented with a basket of delicious scones.

Very enjoyable stay with comfortable, well equipped accommodation. Located in a tranquil environment, close to Sani Pass, which was our primary destination. Warm scones in the mornings were a winner!
We stayed in Valley House, which is a large three bedroom house that provided everything we needed for our self=catering holiday.

We recently stayed in Stone House at the Mkomazana Mountain Cottages situated at the foot of the Sani Pass. The setting was stunning it was originally a Historic Trading post, its full of character and beautifully appointed, the cottage was fully equipped also had a wood burning fire, the garden is private with stunning views of the mountains. Our favourite spot was the verandah where we enjoyed the freshly baked scones that were delivered to our cottage each morning. This is a really tranquil place to stay and explore the Sani Pass area we were also lucky to spot Buck in our garden early in the morning. We enjoyed walking around the property and spotted a variety of bird life and Otters in the dam. We will certainly return to the Mkomazana mountain Cottages

The road to Mkomazana Mountain Cottages is tarred all the way now. Only going up the Sani Pass you will need a 4 x 4 (border currently closed though).
The nearest supermarket is approximately 25km drive away and we do not have any washing machines in our cottages unfortunately, however guest's can ask the staff to wash for them.
Hi Libby, so sorry to answer you late. We didn't pick up your message until today. We have been fully booked for several months and unfortunately don't have any cancellations. We hope that you found accommodation and that you will make a booking with us at another time. Mkomazana Mountain Cottages are set in the most beautiful surroundings...
