My husband and I visited Saruni Mara for our honeymoon this past July and while we were only there for 3 days, we had a wonderful time! All of staff was amazing and we really enjoyed getting to spend time with Kiseme and James. They went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful stay! Kiseme was our guide and he let us sit in one spot for 6 hours because we wanted to see a cheetah hunt (his name is Billy). And boy, were we not disappointed! Billy FLEW after a gazelle but we waited quite a while to see it (just a friendly reminder, be patient and kind with your guides as they don't have any control over where the animals are or what types of animals you will see during your stay but they certainly do try their best to make sure you see what you want)! The room was very comfortable and all of our meals were delicious!

All around, an amazing stay and we hope to visit again someday. To Cecilia and the team at Saruni Mara, asante sana tuonane tena hivi karibuni (thank you very much, see you again soon)!

This lodge is amazing...we visited at the end of January. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff are all from the Masai Tribe and look after their guests as if they were part of their family.
The rooms are very clean and spacious with very large verandas with wonderful views and great sunsets. One can see wild animals grazing outside one’s room.
There is hot water on demand and the showers are wonderful. There is also a flushing loo.
The rooms are quite a way from each other and the staff always accompany one to the dining/sitting room when it is dark.
The food is very good, as are the picnic lunches which we enjoyed daily. They serve very palatable South African wine. In the evening before dinner all the guests sit round an open fire with the staff and enjoy a sundowner with them.
The drivers/guides are very good and know a lot about the animals and birds. We had Kisseme and he was amazing. He could spot small birds in the trees and recognised that some of the animal’s behaviour can show one where the predators are hiding.
The manageress is always around and greets all the guests when they return to the lodge.
We can highly recommend the experience.

It's taken a bit to be able to write this review simply because I've had a hard time putting in words how much I loved it here. I also can't type it without crying. Our time at Saruni Mara was truly remarkable.

We were the only guests there for 4 out of 5 nights which made for a really intimate experience. The management was lovely and so hospitable. Our guide, Sinia, was the best of the best! He took us out every day and caught the most AMAZING sights. We learned so much from him about all of the Mara. It was pretty mind blowing how he could read the animals and predict what they were about to do. His expertise awarded us some of the most beautiful and once in a lifetime nature observations.

Our waiter, James, was an angel. He was so kind and so helpful, always wanting to make sure we had everything we needed. The food here was exceptional (even better than our previous lodge). Every meal was cooked to perfection and tasted amazing. They set up tables for us on the lawn and in the library to make meals special and exciting, which was so sweet and thoughtful. We were also able to have the Masai Warriors come and they danced and sang around the fire (so did we!) which was a really beautiful experience.

The lodge itself is lovely, tucked in the mountains with an amazing view of sunset. There are animals roaming around which we absolutely loved (baboons, zebra, buffalo and of course Jaki the Oryx to name a few!). They explained the hot water situation when we arrived, which was that they light a fire to heat the water and just need a 30 mins heads up prior to showering. We weren't very good at deciding when we might want to shower yet we never once had an issue with lack of hot water. They also put warmers in your bed when they are turning down your room for the night which was amazing and so cozy. We utilized their complimentary laundry service and honestly, even that was spectacular. I don't know how they folded the clothes so perfectly but I would really like to learn. Wifi available in your villa but not in common areas which they explained was to promote sharing stories, enjoying the space/nature and be present. I absolutely loved this concept (having the ability to be in touch if needed but not constantly being connected.)

They also had a doc come on site to complete our covid swabs which were required as we were departing for Tanzania from the Mara. It was a seamless and simple procedure that didn't interfere with our itinerary at all.

This was just the most incredible experience and I cried the whole morning we had to leave because I didn't want to say goodbye (my first time every crying leaving a vacation!)

Shoutouts to Gladys, Chris, Cecelia, James, Sinia, William, Edouard, Stanley, Antony and Gladys from the gift shop for all being so kind and making our time in the Mara unforgettable!!!

First of all, on a positive note I must say that we saw an enormous amount of animals thanks to Lamaria and Charity. They were just the best guides and most of the time we were the first and sometimes only Jeep at a sighting. They were amazing at spotting animals from huge distances away and looked after us so well on our drives. The drives are quite long, which we didn’t mind, but it is quite a long bumpy ride into the main parts of the reserve.

On arrival, we were given the cottage furthest away from the main area which was apparently requested by our agent because of the beautiful view. Because of the very uneven pathway which was also slippery in places because of unusually wet weather, we asked to be moved and Cecilia, the manager willingly moved us. We stayed one night in the first cottage. Views are good from most places anyway. I asked for a hairdryer and was told I could borrow the one and only hairdryer from the office which I found a little strange. Just as well there was only one other couple staying there at the time. As there was only one large mirror in the first cottage, that had to be moved down to our new place so I had a mirror to do my hair. Again, strange that they’re aren’t mirrors in every cottage.

There are times when electricity is provided by a generator and other times by solar power and we didn’t envisage this to be a problem until the generator broke down. The worst part of staying there is the fact that you can’t just have a shower when you like. You have to predetermine what time/s you would like to wash and then they light a wood burner outside your cottage to heat the water. In our experience over 3 days, there were 2 occasions where this system just did not work and we ended up waiting and waiting for a shower. On our last morning, we knew they had lit the wood burner a good while previously as the smoke alarm in our room woke us, but still no hot water for ages after. By the time, the shower was ready, we were already late to leave for our flight and unfortunately I stepped into the shower and slipped on the glossy painted shower tray. I was very shaken up, but had no option other than to get on with it and get ready to leave. Luckily, I escaped with a badly bruised elbow. There were some nice touches like hot water bottles being put in your bed in the evenings. However, overall we were not impressed with the cottage facilities.

Food was average and having stayed at one of the sister properties, Saruni Samburu, we had expected great things. However, the food didn’t quite hit the mark and we had to point out the stale grissini sticks a couple of times, but this seemed to be ignored. We ended up with tummy bugs as did the only other couple staying there. Service was good and the guys seemed to try really hard. Cecilia, the manger also seemed to be doing her best and she said all the right things.

I’m sorry and disappointed that Saruni Mara did not live up to our expectations, especially as we loved Saruni Samburu. The saving grace was the amazing animals we saw and the excellent guiding by Lamaria and Charity.

I'm very sorry that your experience was below your expectations and was marred by a few incidents. I'm surprised by your assessment of our cuisine, that normally is praised by our guests as you can see from the other reviews. I'm particularly sorry about your braised elbow and we'll see if we can make that surface less slippery: your point is taken and we'll work on it. Thank you again for writing such an honesty review.

Saruni Mara is an intimate and wonderfully run safari lodge located in the foothills of the Masai North Conservancy. The lodge has only 6 cabins so it is easy to believe you are the only ones their. Each cabin provides plenty of privacy and has comfortable beds, running water (hot on request), and a great view of the small valley below the camp where animals will graze at any time of the day. The staff are all members of the local Masai tribe and provide amazing and caring service to all of the guests. The owner of the camp was a former Italian journalist which you can recognize in the food they serve. It is Italian inspired, tastes amazing, and served three times a day. Meals are often communal with other guests, senior camp staff, and safari guides which provides a great opportunity to share stories and ideas for the next safari trip. All of the safari guides are excellent and extremely personable. Our guide, Lameria, seemed to know where every animal on the reservation would be and we could not have asked for a better guide during our time at Saruni. We travelled here for our honeymoon and truly felt that we were in a special place. We could not recommend it more.

Our family group of 5 adults and one child had a wonderful visit to Saruni Mara which is located in the Mara North Conservancy adjacent to the Masai Mara National Reserve. Due to the limited number of vehicles allowed in the Conservancy, we were able to be close up to lion prides and a cheetah with six cubs. We enjoyed an amazing experience of watching the cheetah hunt and successfully kill a large, adult impala. All the 9 month old cubs were soon enjoying breakfast with Mom and there were only 2 vehicles at the scene.
Chris and Charity were our wonderful guides. The vehicle was very comfortable and our grandson enjoyed the experience.
We were accomdated in the family villa and the Photographer's cottage. The rooms are all lovely with very comforatble beds. Each morning we had a bush breakfast picnic whilst out on a game drive. Lunch and dinner are served in the central area and the Italian cuisine was first class. Special dietary requirements were catered for by the chefs. As it is a small camp, there is an opportunity to meet fellow guests and share experiences over lunch and dinner.
Cecilia, the lodge manager, and her staff were wonderul and made sure our stay was memorable.

Safari experience & guide (Tinka) were both fantastic. We were lucky with the animals we saw, but we think having Tinka as a guide would make anyones trip more lucky than most. His knowledge of both the safari area, the animals & environment meant that our experience was not only entertaining but educational & informative. At times, totally shocking in a fantastic way, leaving our families review of the experience as epic!

The private villa (Nyati) is nothing short of an iconic and quintessential safari lodge in unspoilt and spectacular views and location.

The staff at the lodge (James, John, Josephine) provide fantastic hospitality with exceptional dining & service in immaculate safari accommodation. Feeling entirely secure in this unique environment with a guard on site throughout the night (Joel).

We would unreservedly recommend this trip.

We stayed here for four nights on our honeymoon and cant recommend highly enough. The camp itself is fantastic and we particularly liked the main communal area where you could enjoy a drink by the fire with other guests at the end of the day. The staff were particularly kind and helpful and went out of there way to look after us. The food was delicious, particularly the Bush breakfasts which were a real highlight. We really liked the location of the camp which was away from some of the more busy areas of the mara. The guides were brilliant and the game drives we did completely surpassed all our expectations. We booked through Far and Wild travel who managed everything brilliantly and made sure the whole trip ran seamlessly. We would love to go back!

Amazing location, stay and hospitality! I wouldn’t have hoped for anything different. The best part of Saruni lodges are the people, they make everything perfect. Food was fabulous, Italian influenced and they have a 14 day menu across all Saruni lodges which is nice if you stay at multiple locations. They have a free laundry service, which is perfect since we cannot pack a lot because of weight limitations. The cleaning staff comes in a few tomes and the room is so cozy when you get back from game drive or dinner. Except for the bumpy road from conservancy to the lodge, which Saruni has no control on, it’s literally the Kenyan highway, I would say everything else has been immaculate!

As good as it gets. Knew it would be magical when we turned the corner for the hill to camp and were met by a tower of giraffes. It just kept getting better every day with our guide Senior. He located a fresh lion kill of a zebra, watched her drag it across the road to a hiding place and the next day watched 2 lionesses and about 8 Cubs feast. not only was our guide able to spot all the animals +, he was an expert in Astronomy and told us stories of the constellations. this was our first safari and it got off to a wonderful start. The chef is Italian and luscious risotto and lasagna. James/ Soti of the wait staff was superb and I can’t thank Diane enough for helping with the forms to get to Tanzania. I know I got names wrong but truly a magical start, especially watching baboons and warthogs go running by our tent. Also a private concession so pretty much has the Mara to ourselves. One nice thing is the guides can go off road into the bush not just stay on the trails like the public reserves

hi Jacki, Saruni Mara is located on there hills inside Mara North Conservancy and Saruni Wild is located in the plains inside Lemek Conservancy. At both properties we offer short walks, but the increase of wildlife in the last 10 years means that we are less and less keen to expose our guests to the potential dangers of bush walks. Also please note that mara North and Lemek do not have armed rangers available le to extort our guests. Our property in Samburu, however, has a location that allows fantastic walks and has armed rangers, so I'd recommend you do your bush walks in Samburu instead of the Masai Mara. We look forward to have you with us!

If you read the - for instance - last 10-20 tripdavisor reviews of 2018 about Saruni Mara you will find the answer, which is: no, the fact that Saruni Mara is on the mountain overlooking the plains instead of being in the plains does not impact at all the quantity or quality and variety of wildlife that you experience. All our guests see an en extraordinary amount of wildlife, almost always much more than they expected. Our guides are fantastic an below to the local community an know the terrain metre by metre. When you drive out of Saruni mara on your way to a game rive, you don;t do a "transfer to the plains" an waste time: you drive through fantastic valleys and mountains with an abundance of wildlife and birdlife and amazing landscapes, with some traditional masai villages who belong to the people who own an protect the land where the wildlife is. I hope this helps, but if not kindly let me know.

Hello Ana, sorry for the delay in replying. Our food is Italian inspired, but far form being "basic" (I hope), as you can see from many tripadvisor reviews with their comments on the quality of our food. Kenyan cuisine is quite simple an as Rebecca says here we regularly offer a taste of it. If you want to have Kenya ashes more regularly or just to be sure that during your safari you ha a inner with Kenyan ashes, you are very welcome to let us know in advance and we'll organise a great "African dinner" for you.
