This was a last-minute booking, so Portofino Guesthouse was not our first choice of stay. That said, we were quite pleasantly surprised, although I would probably choose a different guest house the next time we visit Port Alfred. There are a number of reasons for this: not all the rooms have nice views, whereas other places around PA will always have nice views; the rooms are a tad noisy and we could hear quite a bit from next door; it's far from the beach although you do have a nice view (if you have a room with a view); the bed was horribly uncomfortable.
All that being said, we were pleasantly surprised. Carin at reception was VERY nice and very helpful. She had no problem with us arriving late and had no issues answering the tons of questions we had about PA. She also made an excellent breakfast, as the chef was absent the morning after we arrived. The rooms themselves are quite nice, if slightly cramped. Everything is very clean and hygienic though, and everything feels like quality. You will certainly have a comfortable stay.
The one recommendation I can make, which is slightly strange perhaps, is the use of language around the place. There are a lot of signs around telling you what to do and what not to do. These could be worded slightly different, so as to come across as being a little more friendly.

We stayed at Portofino with a group of teenagers who competed in Boatrace 2014. The staff at the guest house was amazing and helped us with everything from mattresses to laundry! The rooms are comfortable and the location of the guest house is amazing - beautiful views. Great experience.

Enjoyable stay except for the rowdy neighbours during the second night. Very convienient as we attended a funeral at the Baptist Church around the corner. On arrival and departure the service from Carin who was the only member of staff on duty was very pleasant.

I have reached out on a Saturday evening for an urgent Booking due to a Break Up with my boyfriend and I had no place to stay. The owner itself called me back the same evening telling me that I am welcome and will make all possible to support me in this situation. The next day I even got a little whats app with a welcome text. When I arrived felt welcome straight away and was impressed about the clean and stylish restaurant, terrace and the beautiful view. The owner introduced me to his daughter and son, who are also helping in the hotel and last but not least to his wife. I even got a shoulder and opportunities to reach out for a talk or help whenever needed. Wow. This is a real authentic family driften hotel with a big passion of hosting. And on top of that the room is super clean and welcoming, even a little kitchen is available with coffee & tea & big fridge. The bathroom is super clean and the bed super cozy. Prepared water to drink was always available too, which is not usual in Port Alfred. The city center, marine and beach is all reachable inbetween 5-10min drive. I planned to stay for 5 days, I decided today to stay for 2 weeks :) Writing this review already now, knowing my good experience will not change - will maybe even get better the moment the wind calms down and I can enjoy the outdoor pool :)

The place is very dirty, the Manager/Owner very rude. There was no water and no means were made for us, we were just told water is available from 10pm to 6am. Single bed mattresses not even a 10 year old will sleep on them. We booked for 3 bedrooms but were only given 2 and promised a voucher to make up for the other room though we have fully paid and that voucher is only usable during the week. We were an hour late since we were coming from far and the way Paul shouted at me you would swear I were his 3 yr old. We asked for dinner setup table of which they did but on arrival no one was there to welcome us at the dinner table to serve us as a result we decided to go and eat somewhere that is when Paul came after us offering dessert. The place is at the right place with beautiful views but with bad management

We only stayed one night, but it was worth it. Great view, great reception, great home-made bran muffins at breakfast! Breakfast was extra (R60 per person if I remember correctly) but it was delicious and they really went out of their way to make us feel at home.
It is located in a quiet area, lovely pool inside and outside so ideal for kiddies too.
The room is actually a miniature house, incl. separate kitchen with fridge, sink, table, cooking stuff so also ideal for longer stays and if you want to self-cater.
Only downside was that in our little house (#9) we couldn't open the bathroom window and the curtains don't really make the room very dark (lots of light outside). But these were minor things in the general scheme of things

We had the most awsome time at Portofino. Where ever we went at the guesthouse, to the pool, dining area or garden, was very well maintained.
I cannot fault anything. We spent lovely evenings on the deck having sundowners. Nothing was too much trouble for Kirsten, who was there most of the time and Karen.
Have already encouraged others to go there. Would definitely go back.
Have a wonderful season.

I honestly don't know how any platform can allow this establishment on their site and allow guests to book this guest house. It doesn't look ANYTHING like the pictures, the swimming pool was GREEN with things growing in it, the garden was overgrown and terrible. The photos of this establishment must have been taken 10 years ago!!!! The floorboards on the balcony running around the house are weathered and feel like you might go through them at any point. The paint is peeling outside, and the roof is rusted. There is no restaurant as stated, closed down. The inside pool is also green, and you are not able to swim in it!!! The bedrooms are soooooo run down, bedding smells, pillows smell, carpets smell, blankets smell, the shower is so dirty and covered in lime scale you daren't shower bare foot, the taps don't open properly, the bathroom window doesn't open, the bathroom light doesn't work. There is a funky smell from the fridge every time you open it. The kettle is soooo dirty and full of lime scale, the oven is from the 1970's not even sure it works. The dish cloths are old and stained. Only 1 wine glass and all miss matched cutlery and crockery. No hair dryer had to ask for one and it is 10 years old!! Safe in room doesn't work, one bedside lamp doesn't work. Stains on the duvet cover. Lounge coach is so dirty and smells, carpet in lounge smells. You can hear everything from your neighbours rooms, there is no privacy. The staff are trying their best with the limited means the OWNER has given them, but seriously if I was the owner of this place, I would be SOOOOO embarrassed to allow people to actually pay for this place.

DISGUSTING DON'T BOOK IT EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Portofino looks nothing like the advertised photos which must have been taken a few years ago. It is run down and generally feels tired and unloved. Room walls are paper thin so we hear all noises and there is little privacy because the walkway to rooms is directly outside the Windows which don't shut properly. So have to keep curtains closed. The security gate works sporadically. The small pool is dirty and cracked. Very disappointing and not recommended. "The Lookout" guest house next door looks much better.

It was my first stay at Portofino. The place is beautiful with a great view of Port Alfred. The room was quite big as it was a family room. The place has 2 swimming pools, indoor and outside, something my niece found to be quite fascinating. The lady that assisted us with our booking had such an impeccable customer service. Subject to correction I think her name is Lauren. She even called us from her cellphone to check how far we were as we were running a bit late. The premises are secured and very neat .
