The most terrifying night of my life! I arrived there in June 2019 at 5pm. I was the only guest in the entire hostel. It was like a scene from a horror movie. I was met by the owner who then left and left me with his assistant a guy named Tk. I did not know Port Alfred and thought I was in a secure safe place. Wrong. As soon as it got dark this guy TK decided he is now off duty and left me alone in this huge place to go drinking. I stayed in this place alone with no key to the hostel not knowing if I could get out. In a panic I called the owner. He never responded to any of my calls or messages. His name was Sam! Until today I have not heard from him. The place was opposite a township and this guy basically locked me in the hostel without my knowing. He appeared midnight so drunk he woke me up! I was in survival mode and decided to stay up all night to talk to this guy. I put spray in my pocket in case something happened. He was touchy feely offering me a blanket to sit outside with him and I was firm I said no. He then said oh I know you are a woman alone. Tonight I am not going to confirm the stereotype of tonight of a woman getting hurt. I felt so awkward. I kept calling the owner no one showed up.There was no safety a for me as a woman.Im was so traumatized I took me almost two months to face it and write a review.:( Ladies be careful out there. Good Day Caithodge I trust all is well and thank you for the review - we really value our customers' input. I am sorry that you were the only guest at Wanderlust but we have no control over how many guests would like to visit in our quiet season. If you look at all our other reviews this is the first of its kind. Many of the reviews below are written by female guests. We have had over 500 females stay over who are travelling solo, and who feel the complete opposite to what you described. I must point out that around 85% of our guests are solo international female visitors. Firstly, it is not compulsory or our responsibility to keep our guests entertained. We do this because we are passionate about tourism and love what we do. Our primary responsibility is to offer clean and safe accommodation. I remember your visit quite clearly and we are usually quite hesitant to allow South Africans entry into Wanderlust for this exact reason. You arrived here with three other individuals who you wanted us to accommodate as well, but they didn't want to stay because we have communal showers and this wasn't up to their South African expectations. This was already a negative point for you. I must also mention that at this point you had already called me close to 11 times that day before your arrival; asking for trivial information you could have found out if you decided to do some research instead of looking at just our pricing. Which just happened to be the cheapest pricing in Port Alfred at the time. You asked me multiple times if the town is safe to which I replied yes. TK did not decide to go off duty as he doesn't have fixed working hours - you will find out why later on in this communication. He chose to get away as he informed me that you were making advances towards him and that he wasn't interested. I personally explained to you that the front door does not require a key and you could leave and return at your own leisure. Yes, I do remember you calling and I answered the calls the first three times, and I recall you informing me that you are afraid of being alone in the BACKPACKERS. I then humbly requested TK to come back to keep you company (no matter how annoying the situation was) as I had previous commitments. And he did return. I honestly don't blame him for getting absolutely drunk to deal with your separation anxiety waiting at Wanderlust. If you did your research you would have known exactly where we are situated and that the Great Kowie River divides the township called Nemato and my Property which equates to about 4 kilometers away. Please enlighten me as to what you have against townships as a matter of interest. We love our not so close neighbours and offer a township tour to guests whom we like. We drop off sanitary pads that have been donated to Wanderlust to a school for underprivileged girls who have to miss school when they get their monthlies. Much to your dismay this is TK's project which he drives quite passionately. He has just successfully registered his NPO and I am more than happy to forward you this information. We have taken a few hundred guests to visit the school and enjoy the cultural and ethical experience of giving back and helping others in need. We offer blankets to all our guest as we love spending time on the couches outside under the beautiful starry skies no matter the weather. I would like to enquire - if you were in said survival mode, why did you not leave the premises as you now knew you weren't "LOCKED IN"? People do not stay in situations "all night" where they feel unsafe but have the means to get out. I would gladly have refunded you your money. I was on the property later that night, as I live in the house just below the BACKPACKERS. You did not call me after TK arrived as I was in constant contact with him. And just to confirm, he blatantly told you that you are going to be safe and you found that awkward. TK does not get paid to work here because he is volunteering his time and efforts for accommodation and food. There is a site called WORKAWAY - please check it out as it is an actual thing. People around the world use it to find volunteering projects. I do apologise for only responding now as I was in Johannesburg visiting my daughter.

Wanderlust is a unique place, and MOST VISIT! The vibe is chilled and extremely welcoming, and you don't feel like a guest - you feel like family. The hosts go out of their way to make you feel good :-) It's a place you have a hard time leaving again. The surroundings in Port Alfred is local and beautiful - so many activities including sand boarding, surfing, horseback riding - or just chilling at the lovely beaches. I'll give my warmest recommendation lo let your mind wander at Wanderlust

This places is a wonderful place to stay in a hidden gem (Port Alfred) on the sunshine coast. The backpackers is SO laid back it's like staying at your parents house (assuming your parents are laid back and you get along with them...). People always seem to stay longer than planned because it's so beautiful, with wonderful staff and, considering its such a small town, actually quite a lot to do. Highly recommend the sandboarding (which the backpackers actually pay for you to do an hour for free because they know it's so good!). The town is really safe, the beaches are beautiful, what more do you need to know!?

This backpacker was very welcoming, warm, friendly and clean. We just stayed one night, but the owner was very friendly and invited us to dinner after a very long drive late in the night.Nevertheless, the bunk beds were very narrow, you weren't even able to sit in a comfortable position on it. In addition to, the late check-in and early check-out was no problem. Totally recommendable backpacker!

Nice location :) All people were friendly and we felt like home. We enjoyed the time, especially the table tennis, talking to the stuff and playing pool together. A little bit difficult to find the house but with help of the navigation of our mobile phone it was okay.
