It is many years since we last visited Riijks, situated to the north of the quaint town of Tulbagh.

The property has undergone major renovation recently and some planting is yet to be completed.

Room 8 was a generous size beautifully appointed in light and airy colours with wooden floors, a thatched roof and modern fittings. The bed is comfortable and very large and there is an indoor seating area as well as a small terrace at the front of the room overlooking the vineyards.

There were some minor teething problems in that hot water did not reach the large modern bath but the shower (in fact a double shower) was excellent. There was also a very large settlement crack in the bathroom which will need attention shortly.

The pool area has undergone substantial change, there is now a much smaller "eco pool" set in developing gardens. Personally I preferred the original large size pool but the new concept is different and the pool probably did not get much use.

The public areas have been completely rebuilt with a wine tasting area (used to be held in the winery itself - a short walk away) and the restaurant is bright and new but on the night we had dinner we eat outside.

Staff were all extremely friendly and we certainly recommend this as a lovely retreat for a few days.

Stayed in a one bedroom detached cottage offering gorgeous views past the main building to the mountains which make a magnificent backdrop. Sadly, for the business, Covid restrictions meant no alcohol was allowed for wine tasting or consumption and that resulted in very few guests which was a joy for us because social distancing did not become an issue.

Management and staff were delightful. Freshly prepared food was excellent and enhanced by the views from the outside tables. There’s a small swimming pool that contains no chemicals but is kept spotlessly clean as well as the surrounding poolside complete with loungers.

Frankly, I wouldn’t rate the nearby town as highly as this hotel but if you’re in need of a comfortable few days in the most beautiful setting then I can’t recommend Rijks highly enough.

During September 2020 we stayed a few days in the Cederberg and on our way back home wanted to stay another night. Ended up at the Rijks Wine Estate & Hotel as it was a long week-end and the spots in the Cederberg were all fully booked. We arrived rather late - but what a reception!!!! The staff were extremely accommodating with a wine tasting (which was included in the price) although we were late. The accommodation was of very high standard and the restaurant absolutely wonderful. All of us were very satisfied with the quality of the service as well as the food. Will definitely stay at this wine estate again.

We went here to wine taste. They have a beautiful outside terrace looking to the mountains and we sat down. A lady whom I believe may have been the manageress approached and told us “you can’t taste wine here, you have do do it inside”. The reason we were told is that the wine would get too hot for us to appreciate it outside! This despite Rick’s being prepared to serve wine on the same terrace at lunch and dinner. We said we’d prefer to taste outside and take the risk of “hot” wine but the answer was “no - it’s not company policy”.
The inside room we were shown stank of stale wine and there were uncleared wine glasses lying around the room.
We decline to taste. My advice - avoid Rijk’s and try somewhere else in Tulbagh.
Although a beautiful location the service is very poor - particularly if you’re English because the manageress appears to dislike the English on principle.
Stay away!

As avid and frequent travelers of Cape hospitality we were utterly disappointed with our overall experience of this establishment. Many items were dismal from the actual accommodation (did not truly reflect the pictures and needed proper maintenance) to the poor service levels received on many occasions. In particular the staff refused to provide us a kettle for hot water for our little ones feed (even though kettles were available in the cottages). They also gave us wet towels after cleaning our room (never in our life did we get this in both of our rooms). The shower over flowed and there was no DSTV available. We did not feel welcome and almost felt like we were doing them a favour by staying there. The lady at the front desk and the GM were exceptionally poor and rude.. In this time of Covid we would have expected better service overall seeing as they were quiet. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. The noise of the cars on the main road could also be heard in the rooms which is disturbing. The view was great but thats about it. The staff need to be trained better and a greater focus on client service. Definitely won't return.

From the moment we entered the restaurant we felt completely ignored. My wife had to ask for a menu after waiting 10-15 minutes with no service. Eventually a waitress brought us a menu. We were advised that the food "could take a while" as they had 2 tables ahead of us in the queue. We asked how long is "a while" and the waitress shrugged her shoulders. We got the distinct impression that she was suggesting that we don't order food at all. We had a drink and left (hungry).

I counted 2 waitresses for the entire resturant and can only assume that the kitchen was similarly understaffed if they cannot manage 3 tables's orders. Rijks markets themselves as high-end country food but they have missed the mark. The service can only be described as unapologetically incompetent, slow, surly and rude. The staff looked tired and couldn't even fake a smile. Management was nowhere to be seen.

We visited Rijks several years ago and had a wonderful experience. This time around we brought overseas visitors based on our recommendation and they were not impressed. It was rather embarrassing. It is extremely disappointing because the setting is absolutely beautiful. AVOID!!!

Had an incredible time at Rijk's for two nights, and thoroughly enjoyed being there - to the point where we did not leave the entire time! We love the Tulbagh heat yet you still need a pool to dip in, and that pool was divine. Added to that, the rooms are much cooler and you can handle the hot summers. Breakfast was incerdible, and the staff were the most epic part of the stay - really willing to do anything to make our stay feel like we're at home. Will come again.

Beautiful upmarket Hotel with reasonable prices. Very friendly and accommodating staff. We upgraded to the chalets for the same midweek special price and the chalet was clean and spacious with heaters already on to make our stay comfortable as it was very cold.

My husband and I spent three nights at Rijks hotel and would have given it a higher rating if there was a semblance of decent housekeeping and management. On arrival our room was dirty and it took housekeeping 30 minutes to vacuum the dirt off the floor and remove the cob webs, spiders and dead insects. The cob webs in the rafters remained as they did not have a ladder long enough to reach the thatched roof. The one basin in the bathroom was blocked and nothing was done even after our request. The grouting between the tiles was mildewed showing neglect. That said, the hotel has a wonderful setting and magnificent views. Our private cellar room was spacious with a double shower and double basins and a generously proportioned oval bath. Our private terrace had a table and two chairs. The one dinner we ate at the hotel was well presented and of a good quality. The breakfast was good albeit a self service buffet which was not Covid friendly. The hot breakfast was served. There appeared to be a shortage of staff, lack of staff training and management. With these management issues addressed Rijks has the potential to be the luxury getaway as advertised.

Large spacious rooms with high thatched ceilings and tastefully decorated on a farm, surrounded by vineyards offers luxurious accommodation on the edge of Tulbach.
Excellent wine on offer in the onsite restaurant that offers small menu with local and traditional dishes, tastefully prepared.
Close to other local destinations and an excellent “stoep” ( veranda) for sundowners and outdoor supper.
Only downside for us, was that we are not coffee drinkers and a kettle in the room would have been very welcome rather than just a coffee machine.
Will certainly return for a longer stay next time.
